Now the cons: This property is set up as a cruise ship destination. Which means bus loads of day trippers come here for the tour. We were not from a cruise ship as we were staying in Juneau. But we were herded like cattle for the tour. They have large golf cart that takes everyone to the top of the property. Everyone is jockeying for a spot on the carts. Not a very relaxing experience. Once on the golf cart the driver gave a monotone and disinterested commentary. I have to agree with the other reviews regarding the staff. They were knowledgeable but not friendly. We weren’t subject to outright rudeness but you can tell that the staff just tolerates you being there. All in all we are happy that we went and kudos to the owner for what he has done. The visitor center itself is very well done, full of fascinating exhibits, interactive displays, and helpful rangers who provide great insight into the glacier’s history and the surrounding environment. It’s definitely worth spending some time inside before or after exploring the trails. There are three main hiking trails, and we were able to complete two of them during our visit. The most popular trail leads to a stunning waterfall, which was one of the highlights of the day. Standing so close to the powerful rush of water was amazing, and the hike itself was easy and accessible. Just keep in mind that from the waterfall viewpoint you’ll see very little of the glacier’s face, so don’t expect a dramatic glacier backdrop from that angle. One thing to note is that the glacier has receded quite a bit over the past decade, and while it’s still impressive, it’s not quite as massive or striking as older photos might lead you to believe. That said, it’s still a remarkable sight. When we visited, it was both rainy and very crowded, which made it a little less enjoyable. Be prepared for unpredictable weather and large groups, especially if you’re visiting during cruise ship season. Despite those challenges, Mendenhall Glacier is absolutely worth a visit if you’re in Juneau. Chloe and the captain were absolutely amazing and so knowledgable! We saw their favorite whale “Barnacles” multiple times. She gave us quite a show with her fluke dives and also breaching! It was a perfect evening and the weather was just right in early September. It’s in a short walk from the cruise ships and there are buses. That’ll take you back-and-forth to the downtown area. The staff was super accommodating to our group. We had one wheelchair user so this was a huge help. Very friendly, helpful navigating the menu and we enjoyed trying flights of their beers and some nibbles. Everything in town is a bit chaotic given the numerous cruise ships, but this team has figured out how to manage people and make it a good experience. Aside from the views of the glacier in the distance, we could see (and hear) Nugget Falls in the distance. Nearby the bus area, there was a wooden walkway going over the top of a salmon spawning area where we caught sight of two different brown bears wandering down to do so fishing. As the walkways are elevated, one of the bears passed directly below us. The walking loop also had some minor vegetations and a few standing pools to look at. There park is very well maintained and easy to get around, and it's a short walk to get to the photo areas. Lots of places to take photos!! Note: June & July you may need to pack your mosquito repellent! It’s a very quick but steep walk from downtown up to the place where the trail starts - you could take an Uber if you wanted to safe energy for the hike. The whole trail is well laid out and well signed. And it felt very safe too. We passed several people doing the walk in the opposite direction. I’m not sure which is easier/ better as it’s a constant incline and muddy / slippery in places. It’s an absolute gorgeous hike through the pine forests with all the lush green undergrowth. There are several stopping spots with benches, and a few view points too. It took us 90 min to do the complete walk from Downtown. There were tons of mosquitoes and we were so glad we had packed the Deet mosquito repellent, otherwise we’d have been eaten alive! Apparently mid June - end July is mosquito season, so be prepared. We reached the top and had some well deserved refreshing beverages at the restaurant. Be sure to keep your receipts from the Cafe/ Restaurant/ gift shop for your free tram ride down - you need a combined spend of $20 per person to qualify. The price for a one way ticket down is $20 per person anyway, so it’s a no brainier. You queue for the tram and when the person come round to check tickets you just need to show your receipts to prove your spend. A wonderful experience, and highly recommended!

We tried to book this tour through our cruise line and they said it was not an accessible tour. I Googled and figured out the tour operator and called them directly. I spoke to Mikayla (sp?) and she said of course they could accommodate someone with mobility issues and in a wheelchair. Went back to the cruise line and they wouldn’t book the tour for us so I called back and booked directly. We saved money and took the same van from the cruise ship dock. From the folks meeting us at the ship to the people checking us in for our flight to the pilot and the guys helping my husband board the plane, they were so accommodating and caring and I was touched at the way we were treated. I was thrilled we could make this tour happen. It was the highlight of our Alaska trip (the weather was exceptionally cooperative 😊) and I highly recommend the company, the people and the tour!!

It's part of the whole experience. It really puts everything into perspective about the land and its people (Tlinget) who have lived here for centuries.
