The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) is one of the premier mountaineering institutes in the world. Founded on November 4th, 1954 by none other than Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, to commemorate the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa & Sir Edmund Hillary. Being the premier mountaineering institute of South-east Asia, HMI is also referred to as the Mecca of Indian Mountaineering. Facility of Pre-paid taxi stand from NJP Railway station & Bagdogra airport can also be availed. The vehicle management needs to improve. The entire tourist population of Darjeeling will be here with atleast 300 cars on a weekday and more on the weekends. So be ready to walk a bit because your driver will prefer keeping the car at the far end to ease the departure.
No official observatory here when I went in the month of October 2025. You'll have some local vendors who serve maggie and momo as well.

Here I am reviewing zoo.. I don't normally go to Zoos as I don't like seeing wild animals in captivity. However, you have have to go through the zoo to get to the mountaineering museum! So, on that basis I am reviewing it. Apparently the red pandas have been successfully bred here and have been released back into the wild. As far as zoos go, this one is particularly beautiful and has used the natural environment for the construction of the enclosures that the animals have been kept in. It was amazing seeing some of the animals close up.
PS :- The place has many benches to sit, a small restaurant, clean washrooms too. It's very convenient for travelers. One way road so have to walk much.

We walked down to Happy Valley Tea Estate from the Botanical Garden, and as we emerged from the alley into the open, we were greeted by breathtaking views of tea plants carpeting the slopes. The trail, lined with graceful Deodhar trees on one side, made the walk even more delightful.
After a leisurely kilometre-long walk, we reached the estate around 12:30 pm. July being off-season, there were hardly any tourists, and the factory was relatively quiet as most activity happens in the morning hours. Nevertheless, the staff kindly conducted a tour of the factory, explaining the tea-making process in detail, followed by a tea tasting session. The tour costs ₹100 per person.

One of the most beautiful and well maintained tea gardens I have ever visited in Darjeeling district, very few people know & visit this spot as the road condition is not that good , but once you enter into this Garden you will be completely mesmerized, In the tea factory they will show you the entire process of Tea making from Tea leaf plucking to packaging, the factory is situated inside the tea garden only. I randomly stumbled upon the Himalayan Tibet Museum while walking near Mall Road – and I’m so glad I did. It’s a small but beautiful space filled with Tibetan culture, history, and spirituality. You’ll see thangka paintings, prayer wheels, Buddha statues, old photographs, and even a 3D map of Tibet. Everything is arranged with so much care and meaning.
The lady at the counter was very kind and explained a few things with such passion—it really added to the experience. It’s quiet inside, very calming, and makes you feel connected to something deeper.

Shrubbery Nightingale Park is a peaceful, green retreat in Darjeeling with lovely lawns, colorful flowers, and a striking Shiva statue by a small lake. It’s just a short walk from the Mall, costs INR 25 to enter, and is open 8 AM-8 PM. Great for a quick, relaxing stroll or picnic. Sadly, when we visited, clouds blocked the Kanchenjunga views, which was a letdown. The toilets were also unclean, which made the experience less pleasant. Still, it’s a nice spot for some calm if the weather cooperates!

One of the best parks I have been to and that too with a view that kills! You will be able to find a wide range of flowers, most of which you'll probably see for the first time. They do have a temple at the top and a fountain which was not working when I visited. Plenty of greenery to sit, soak up the nature and recharge. 🍽️ There’s a canteen inside the park. I had their paratha with chutney — and it was genuinely superb. Would recommend giving it a try.
🌄 There’s also a viewpoint near the canteen from where you can see Kangchenjunga if the sky is clear. Unfortunately, it was cloudy during my visit.
🪑 Lots of benches, lawn space, and peaceful corners to relax. A great spot for families and kids too.
🌺 If you enjoy flowers and plants, you’ll love the variety here.
📍It’s also very close to Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park.
Overall, a must-visit place in Darjeeling.

It is simply great experience. It's located away from crowdy Darjeeling town, the place is great for a pleasant and calm stay. Mountains are visible from the broad window. Ropeway can be seen too. Service is great. Uncle is great, he takes due care of guests. Food is tasty. Only thing rooms are a bit shabby, there is no long mirror, and there is some issue in electric line. Lights get automatically switched on/ off. Rooms are spacious. A bit cleaning and arranging staff would make it 100/100. It's pocket friendly as well.

The one thing that hits you as you visit this place is the humbleness of Mr Rajesh. He is a person with a golden heart. He makes you feel like a guest treats you like a guest and is always with a smile. I am trying my best at being modest but this man has so much in him to like. Being a one man army he is very helpful and tries his best to fulfil all tantrums which the tourists bring to him. Generally people are circumspect being in an unknown place, but this man literally makes you feel at home. Special mention to the food he serves its just yummy.This is not a luxurious place but just apt for tourists also there is a car park very near to this property. The clock chime in a chilled night from North Point School was so beautiful.I Will have only good words for this place and Mr Rajesh and his friend Kenny who was there during our visit. May God help them to have success in life.

I have been to this homestay for quite a number of times now.
The homestay is 3 minutes (walking distance) away from the shared taxi stand (aka Singamari Motor stand).
As you walk towards the homestay, you will be able to see one of the reputed schools, St Joseph's school, locally known as 'NP', North Point, in Darjeeling.
When you arrive, you will find that the place has 3 rooms.
Two large rooms which can sleep 5 people each (if you don't mind sharing beds) and another room which can sleep 2 people comfortably.
All three rooms have attached bathrooms with electric hot water geysers.
On clear days, the views from the rooms can be pretty spectacular. Even the Kanchenjunga mountains can be seen from the rooms.
The cable cars/ropeway passes by the homestay and can be a very interesting experience watching the reactions of people inside the cars.
Dikki, the owner's sister, is the lady who will be responsible for cooking your meals and hosting you. She is a polite, warm and cherubic person. The meals prepared by her are quite simple, yet delicious. The perfect example of a home cooked meal.
Mr. Rajesh Pradhan, the owner, is a soft spoken, polite and helpful man.
If he has time on his hands then he will personally attend to you.
The Darjeeling Ropeway Homestay is for people who like the rustic experience of a home rather than people looking for posh and blingy hotel experiences.
If you are looking to have the experience of a hotel when you stay here, then this place is not for you.
Here, you will be treated as family and not just a paying customer. And if you can reciprocate in kind then your stay will be wonderful.

Apparently, Mall road is very lengthy and Britishers used it for walking is what I got to know from my taxi driver.

Best part of my day was spent here. The pictures aren't allowed inside. So I couldn't take any. But I'll brief on what exactly made my experience here a memorable one.
The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is one of the premium institutes in India. You may as well call it the IIT of mountaineering. We met an administrative officer, who explains us about the institute, his own experience and about the students. The stories were chilling and mind blowing.
Now coming to the museum. You'll see the equipment and the rug sacks carried by The great Tensing Norgay, Sir Edmond Hillary, the paper cut outs of the Legendary mountaineers and their life. You need atleast 1.30 hours to read all these. See the photos.
Check out the Himalayan Range simulators. You'll definitely feel so small in front of these mountains and these OG mountaineers.
This is a place for goosebumps and inspirational. A must visit.
Entry fee is Rs 110 including the visit to the Zoo and the HMI.

This small and beautiful eatery is my favorite in Darjeeling — probably the best food spot on Mall Road. Located on the first floor, it has a simple yet charming ambiance and serves exceptionally good food.
Their momos are outstanding — easily the best I’ve had in Darjeeling. Though I did find a few bones, the taste more than made up for it. Prices are very affordable, and the staff is humble and welcoming.

Toy/Joy train ride is massively overrated and a complete waste of time and money.
It follows the main road the entire time, feeling more like a bus ride than a scenic journey. For the price of INR 1000 per person, all you get is:
- A 15-minute stop at Batasia Loop and War Memorial.
- A 20-minute stop at Ghum station.
- And then, you just head back to Darjeeling.
Since it uses the same route as the road, you're better off sticking with the taxi you've already paid for, it offers the exact same views without the absurd cost. Don't fall for the hype.

Although the building has been officially renamed as the Deshbandhu Museum, people of Darjeeling in West Bengal still refer to it as its old name, the Step Aside. This is the house where the great patriot Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das spent the last month of his life. Now it houses a maternity and child welfare centre in its ground floor and the first floor has been converted to a museum for Deshabondhu Chittaranjan Das. The museum is located on the C R Road. It is a narrow road that goes downhill from the Chowrasta Mall. If you stand at the entrance of the Nehru Road facing the Mall Road, you will find Caf? Coffee Day on your right. The C R Road starts from there only. One just has to walk few more minutes to reach Step Aside. Step Aside was first built by one Mr. Warnsei. Later it was purchased by Mr.N.N. Sikdar. This gentle man was a good friend of Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das. Meanwhile Deshbandhu was not keeping well.
His hectic political engagements did allow him to take any kind of break. That is why his friends and family decided to bring him to Darjeeling for rest and recuperation and in such a case, Step Aside was the inevitable choice. Deshabandhu arrived in Darjeeling on 6th May, 1925. He began to take long walks and soon was much better. However, he did not entirely give up his political activities. Annie Besant came to meet him at the Step Aside to seek his support for the Commonwealth of India Bill sponsored by the Labour Party in the British Parliament. Mahatma Gandhi too came to meet him. He stayed at the Step Aside from 4th June to 9th June. However, according to some other accounts, Gandhiji arrived on 3rd June and left on 6th.
Nonetheless, the two great leaders spent their time talking not only about the contemporary problems, but also about future plans. Deshbandhu also used this occasion to learn spinning from Gandhiji.
Gandhiji had later mentioned in his memoires how Deshbandhu’s loud and hearty laughter reverberated in the whole house. He also mentioned about his hospitality and how kind and noble he was.
In 1909, many years before Deshbandhu came to spend his last days, Kumar Ramenda Narayan Roy of Bhawal too came to recuperate in this very house. He was however, found dead on 8th May, 1909. It was a stormy night; in spite of that locals took him to the burning ghat. Nobody knows what happened after that. But years later, a sanyasin appeared in Bhawal claiming to be Ramendra Narayan Roy. He resembled the Kumar very closely. This led to a complicated court case. In 1937, the court proclaimed that the sannyasin was truly Kumar Ramendra Kumar Roy.
There was a proposal that one room of this building should be dedicated to the memory of Kumar Ramendra Narayan Roy of Bhawal. However, nothing has so far come out of it.The Museum is open from 10’o clock in the morning to 4 in the evening. It, however, remains closed on Sunday. There is no admission fee.
One and half kilo meter down hill is the Bhutia Basti Monastery. Visitors can visit the monastery after they have finished with Deshbandhu Museum.
