THE GOOD: the venue is nice if a bit noisy. It was packed and the tables for 4 were a pretty tight fit. Overall there was a nice buzz to the place. THE BAD: The Aperol Spitz’ at $20 each were weak and watery and the accompanying bread serve at $5 per slice (no kidding!) is simply ridiculous. Our moustachioed waiter didn’t bother to write our order down. When he repeated the order he got 2 of the 4 items wrong! His knowledge of the menu was poor - when asked he was unable to identify which of the mains were didn’t contain meat products and he thought that all of them contained chicken stock, even the sea food!! In the confusion the pescatarian in our party, who ordered the prawn orecchiette, received her meal without main ingredient, the prawns. The other mains (ditalini, tagliatelle and osso buco) were all ok but only memorable for all being heavily over salted. In summary for a resturant supposedly specialising in pasta dishes to serve up such below par food was a great disappointment. We will not hurry back.

The museum, despite it's name, is much closer to the Ashfield train station so get off there if you are on foot. Don't go to Bassendean station. The old steam engines & diesel locomotives are very appealing. We also enjoyed the model train display which was very detailed. Such great social history about the development of WA, the power & importance of the railway & the strength of the railway families. There were a few noisy, excited children but most were well supervised, although some parents didn't seem remotely interested in educating their children. There were lots of 'wows' with no explanation to the children about the items or the history. It seems to be in line with the dumbing down & superficial approach to parenting children today which is so sad. We spent 2 & half hours looking at the collection in detail. My other half took lots of photos & bought a couple of railway maps. It was a really enjoyable afternoon and the museum would be of great interest to any one who likes trains!!

Cecilia , a volunteer member of the local Historical Society, welcomed us and took our group of four on a personal tour of the buildings. We went to the Maritime Museum on Sunday and had a look around. It is a great Museum and we enjoyed it. I have not been before but my mate has and was looking forward to showing me the Sub. Unfortunately there was only one place left on the tour that day. It was recommended to us to book in advance. The staff were very friendly and informative. We has a very nice coffee at the café but had to sit outside as there must have been some sort of function as all the inside tables were reserved. There were shade umbrellas outsind over the tables but were not really adequate. Some shade sails would make a huge difference. We will return to see the Submarine another weekend and probably book first.
