On our first night, we were able to dress in traditional Bhutanese garb, attend a beautiful dance performance, and participate, then have dinner. Their strength is focusing on the smallest details. They noticed it was my husband’s birthday while we were staying here and surprised him with a decorated room and birthday cake. We were able to use the spa, the hot rock bath is unique to Bhutan and offered a wonderful respite from all of the hiking. Every member of the staff from the front door greeter to the restaurants, to the front desk, to housekeeping are fantastic, if only we had this much grace and care where we live. Tika Ram, the duty manager was leading the charge and is a fantastic man, he was on top of everything.

The staff goes out of their way to make your stay comfortable and memorable. The interiors are beautiful and plush and the rooms are spacious with all modern amenities that you would need. Coming to the food, we dined at Thongsel and met Michelin star Trained Executive Chef Rajinder Sareen , who goes all out to give us all the fine dining and memorable experience at All day dining restaurant. The breakfast buffet was quite exhaustive well dishes for all tastes. Lunch and dinner had multi cuisine dishes in Thongsel restaurant and highly recommend their Butter Chicken by Chef Negi. My personal favourite is Thongsel which serves the best European food in town.Special thanks to Tika from housekeeping,Tshering from front office. Our Vacation was made even more special by the friendliness and service of the whole team. It's a very kid-friendly hotel and highly recommend it for family Vacations.

In evening, I discovered a rat inside my room — which I have on video. The hotel staff eventually caught the rat, but their explanation was deeply disappointing: they casually said “it’s getting cold outside, and rats often enter rooms.” For a property that belongs to Royal family and advertises itself as a luxury resort, this level of hygiene and pest control is absolutely unacceptable. The rooms are a tad small for my liking but the view outside the window where I stayed was pretty okay. Since I need air circulation I requested for a fan and they provided me with a Table Fan. The room which I got had very dim light which was little difficult. Hotel is near market which is at the walking distance. Staff are helpful. Temperature here is pleasant, enjoy it. The best resort in Thimphu, infact Bhutan. Thori is known for its views. Its in the top of mountain. You can see the entire city from your balcony. Bhuddha point is at parallel height. You can see Buddha status from your window. Night as well as morning view from your room is soo great. Rooms are great too with room heaters, large size. Staff here are great and friendly. We were a group of 9 people and took 4 rooms (one floor :p). They prepared a bonfire for us on the day we arrived. I am taking away one star because food was not that great and mostly not available. You must order one day before so that they can make it available for you. Even they you might not get it. This is because the resort is 6km away from city, so they need to go down to purchase only what is required. Overall it was one of best resort I stayed in Bhutan.

However, the one point which made the entire stay unenjoyable in the end and created a very bitter taste was how they ripped us off with the dinner charges. First, they never mentioned the price of the dinner to us and their menus consisted just of a set menu with no prices whatsoever (which made us believe that the dinner was included as it was the case for other hotels in Bhutan). The drinks menu had prices which was clear and easy to handle and we got charged our drinks amount fair and square upon checkout. After we have checked out and left the hotel long time ago, our tour operator all of a sudden informed us that the Zhiwa Ling reached out to them with an insanely overpriced bill for missed dinner payments - around 50 USD per person per dinner. At this point, we were willing to pay but not that much. Not only was the food at best mediocre, also my fiance who had problems with her stomach didn't order all of the courses on the pre set menu. When notifying the hotel manager of the short coming of not mentioning the prices beforehand, they agreed that they made the mistake but sticked to their narrative of us having to pay anyway. When we pointed out that we didn't have all of the 4 courses in all dinners, they came up with the ridiculous excuse that only the main is to be paid (since that was the only course we both had during both dinners) as the other courses are coming for free next to it. Bottom line, just inacceptable managerial behavior which just left us feeling ripped off and not at all appreciated. For the future travelers, please just order starter, soup and dessert as they should be for free and skip the main which is in no way worth 50 USD. We wanted to stay here because it was a beautiful property in the photos. We complained about things and they upgraded us to a suite which was significantly better but still inherently a lot of problems with the property.
