Incredible to be nestled alongside volcanoes with stunning views of Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe, Ruapehu and Taranaki in the far distance. All facilities at the hut were well maintained and we loved the deck with scenic spots to sit and enjoy. Sunset is best viewed from the campsite, if you’re lucky you’ll be treated to incredible hues of red and orange with Taranaki vaguely visible on the horizon. Bookings are essential during the Great Walks season and a ranger is there at all times, water and gas are all accessible at the hut however off-season you’ll need to bring your own supplies. There were 26 wet people trying to dry themselves out, which is a bit cosy. To start with, we could not light the gas fire without the rangers help (who was away from hut when we arrived) as it was a bit broken, then it was discovered that over bunk 18 there was a leak and that resulted in two people needing to take the mattress onto the floor while placing a bucket to catch drops. However, with all these problems I was still glad to have the hut and considering its remoteness it is understandable. The views are fantastic. However the living/cooking area and small bench space are way too small for the number of bed spaces. The hut was full and there is nowhere near enough table space for the number of people the sleeping can accommodate nor is there anywhere near enough bench space (and one sink) so we cooked and ate our food off our knees. Later our group could not eg sit and play cards. The hut is very much the opposite of a modern hut like Waihohonu for example. Rangipo is obviously a popular hut as on the night we stayed all bed spaces were taken, and there were people sleeping on the floor and on the balcony outside (as well as tents around the hut). It’s on a popular and well used track so hopefully it is due soon for enlarging/upgrading or replacement.
