Menu has alcoholic and non-alcoholic choices to start with a wide range of choices. The Lychee soda and Lychee Oolong tea are both fantastic non-alcoholic choices. They have beer and saki available as well. For food you really cannot go wrong. We had the edamame and gyoza along with California onigiri to start. All of which were excellent. For mains we had the Katsu Curry, Piri Kara Buta Bara Don, Mini Su Udon, Karaage Salad all of which were excellent and highly recommend. Portions are ample- you will not leave hungry! Service staff is helpful food was delicious. Wife approved! Place is small do make reservations if possible- otherwise wait will appraise 30-35 minutes. Very off the beaten path but extra worth it.

I needed a typical Washoku(和食) style restaurant that serves varietes of menus. And this was it. -Udon was simple but had great texture noodle with savory enough slightly sweet flavored soup. Personally 8 out of 10. -Ochazuke was great mainly cause I really loved how its base broth was. It had very lightly savory flavor, which I imagined it being anchovy dashi? It was also great that there were many variations for how you can customize your ochazuke. -Saba Shio wasn’t really great. Saba means mackerel and shio means salt. But I couldn’t taste any seasoning from the grilled fish, not even salt really, or maybe just too little was there. -Yaki Onigiri with butter soy sauce on the top was amazing. Butter and soy sauce combined is one of my fav sauce and it glazed on the top of grilled riceball? Can’t ever go wrong for me. Would love to visit again but not sure how soon and how often cause even for 1pm lunch time, I had to wait for a half-hour. And other reviews indicate that waiting line for dinner time is also pretty bad. And I really really hate waiting on line. This place doesn’t seem to accept any reservations either, so too bad.

I’m a personal Chef that just moved to Chinatown on Tuesday 2/20. There was a celebration today 2/24 and I thought it would be nice to get some noodles on my way home. I googled “Best Noodles” near where I live which is 2 blocks away. 4 restaurants came up. Gourmet Noodle Bowl, King Noodle, Jufen Noodle House, and Mike’s Noodles. I was on foot and on King Street which has Mike’s and King’s. Mike’s has (982) reviews and 4.3 stars and King’s has (520) 4.2 stars. Normally I would go where there are more reviews so Mike’s but I was on King’s side of the street so I choose them. WHAT A HUGE MISTAKE! When I walked in there was a lady on her phone texting or whatever and NEVER looked up to say hi, welcome in, are you dining in or carry out? I should have turned around at that point and walked out! But I’m hungry, tired, and was already there. I grabbed a menu and looked at it for about 5 minutes because I make noodles myself and thought about what I would try that’s different from what I make. I choose Szechuan Style Beef and according to the menu it says “Mixed Noodles (with soup on the side) $12.49. I told women I was ready to order and she then asked if I was dining in or taking out. I said take out. It’s super cold in Seattle today this just happened about 25 minutes ago and it’s 6:18 PM and temperature is 49°. Soup with my noodles sounds PERFECT. I place the order she says nothing else, some guy takes my debit card and charges me 14.32 and I rounded it to 16.00. I didn’t leave much because I wasn’t dining in. A few minutes later he hands me a bag and I walk out the door. The people themselves were incredibly nice as always, but the quality of food just felt different. The appetizers of arancino, grandma’s greens, and the olives were all pretty good. The tomato soup broth was hot, flavorful, the right amount of acidity, and was well portioned with loads of meat, veggies, and noodles. My dry beef tripe noodles were a tad bit spicy, but also flavorful, a giant portion size, and a lot of meat for what it was worth. It does come with peanuts too, for those with peanut allergies. I did not have very high expectations, and I was absolutely blown away by their offering. I had Beef & Tripe Dry Rice Noodle and it was spectacular. The portions were generous, especially the meat, and the food was delicious. It had just the right amount of heat, and the fried peanuts added a delightful crunch. I didn't expect them to have spicy crayfish on the menu, and upon seeing it I knew I had to try it. It was deliciously spicy, pleasantly numbing and tasted very authentic. The staff does an incredible job of making you feel safe when you're home, namely with a 24 hour manned desk, and restricted access garage. We're really happy with our decision to make The Modern our home!

It’s a small, unassuming little place with both amazing service, atmosphere and food. I had the Ton Jiru (Pork & Vegetable) miso soup, and it was delicious. The owner recommended that I add shichimi pepper (Japanese 7 spice) and it complemented the soup so well. I also bought an enzyme rice onigiri, which was made fresh. Overall the ingredients and quality of the food was so fresh and healthy. I’m so glad that Cap Hill now has authentic/traditional Japanese cuisine. Looking forward to trying their bentos soon!
