Die schnelle Tour bekommt man in ca 30 Min nach oben und 25Min nach unten hin, ca. Der Wasserfall ist wunderschön - jedoch nicht einfach ein Foto ohne Menschen zu bekommen. Auf dem Rückweg hatten wir sehr straken Regen und waren komplett nass - auch der dichte Wald hat dann nichts genützt, vielleicht an Regencapes denken. Aber es war warmer regen, somit nicht ganz so schlimm. Wer Hühner mag - auf dem Parkplatz laufen sehr viele davon herum. Wir können diese Wanderung auf jeden Fall empfehlen

The trail is very easy to navigate, but there are many roots growing across in places, so mind your footing. Even though it was very wet, there wasn't a lot of mud as the trail is heavily traveled. We wore water shoes and had plenty of traction. There are wild guava trees lining both sides of most of the trail, and the smells and sounds are that of a tropical paradise. Had it not been raining, I'm sure we would have seen more birds. We could hear their songs, but didn't sit in one place long enough to catch a glimpse of any, other than the chickens in the parking are. While this trail is not “maintained” I would like to thank the good stewards who have placed and provided upkeep on the ropes throughout the trail. If you don’t hike or exercise strenuously at home, and come on vacation here thinking you can do this hike, I would advise against it. Some info based on my experience. The first viewpoint is about 3.5km in (~2 miles). The surroundings are beautiful but there are no views of the valley or crater on the way up. If you want to do a shorter version of the hike, there won't be any rewarding views, however, you will see a lot of beautiful plants and flowers. The first 1 mile is nice and slow and the trail is well marked (not very dangerous or hard). This part is mostly shaded. The second part is a bit more tricky (lots of climbing up), the third part is actually almost vertically climbing up a waterfall (there are ropes) and the last part is climbing up a mud trail again. The last parts are not really shaded so make sure to bring sun protection. The hike is quite difficult and dangerous. I went on a very dry day and I slipped and fell multiple times. If it is raining or if it has rained a lot before you want to do the hike, I would recommend not doing it. Climbing up the waterfall is not that easy and you really have to watch your steps. I can imagine if the rocks are wet, it will get very dangerous fast. Bring enough water, it is a super intense climb (I had 750ml, about 1/5th of a gallon and it was definitely not enough). I love hiking but don't get to do it often. This was a hard hike. Took us 8+ hours to complete the whole crater - 10km. If you want to make it shorter I would recommend going right at the crater, going to the peak and then turning back around. That'll probably save you a kilometer especially bc I don't think the rest of the crater was that interesting. While being hard, it was also incredibly rewarding and fun. Three beautiful waterfalls plus you literally climb up the third one using ropes all long the edges. We had rope the whole way up at the end of August 2025. My mom and I hiked this trail together as our last day activity in Hawaii, and it was definitely a highlight! The trailhead is a little difficult to find, just look for the sign on the tree, and to park, you just have to find somewhere around the neighborhood. It rained pretty much the entire time we hiked, which made the trail a lot more difficult and muddy. It is unmaintained, which means that there will be a lot of bushwhacking through plants of all kinds, and you will most likely get extremely muddy. I would recommend to wear long pants, I wore some leggings that only covered half of my legs and I got really scratched up. At the third waterfall, there’s the option to either rope climb up the waterfall or go on a small, extremely unmaintained path next to it, which is the option that we chose. The trail that we chose is still extremely difficult, though! There was a lot of slipping and I almost fell down the trail at some point, but a log that was jutting out caught me in the small fall. We personally chose to summit the peak and then hike the entire ridge, but I would only recommend that to extremely experienced hikers! There was no AC in this place. We paid $12 a person but half of this place is closed. We were in and out in under an hour. Theres maybe five rooms tops with tanks on three walls each. Many of the tanks seem very small or overcrowded for what is being stored in there. Two of the seahorses we saw looked like they were dying (discolored and falling forward on their face in the sand). The outdoor exhibits were closed. I don't know what used to be there but from what we could see it was a small monk seal exhibit.
