This state-owned fort is definitely worth the visit. We self toured but saw some others getting guided tours. We did spend some time with a very friendly and super knowledgeable female employee that gave us a great presentation and answered a ton of questions. We most enjoyed the musket demonstration where the soldier explained how the guns, bullets, and bayonets were used in battles and skirmishes. His demonstration of how to quickly load and fire 3 rounds in about 1 minute was wonderful. We enjoyed the artifacts and displays along with walking around and exploring the fort. There’s a small fee to get in but well worth it. History buffs will love this place! Not a history buff? This fort is a great place to learn about why the US built forts in post-revolution history and the role they served through the late 1800s.

Arrived after the park office had closed but it was pretty easy to figure out where I was going from the reservation packet they had left to the left of the entrance. The right-hand trail of the loop (the shortest way to site 1) is closed but it still took less than 20 minutes to get to the site. But the hike in sites are far away from the main campground so not sure that many people would be interested (no one came through my site in the 12 hours or so I was there). The location is nice, right at the edge of a wetland area with a small waterway right in front of the lookout center, but the bugs are relentless. The no see ums were so bad I could not enjoy my dinner on the lookout platform like I had hoped, and the campground rules state that you are not allowed to have a fire unless it is in a designated ring so I spent 99% of my time there in my tent hiding from the bugs. Maybe it was just the time of year, but I don’t think I would stay here again. Also, they charge you a parking/access fee and I think that’s pretty crap to be charged for that when you are already paying for camping.

I was looking for an easy trail since its been years since I hiked and I've been wanting to get back into it. The place is definitely a gem as its got some beautiful views.
