I love them! I try to stick to the Blue trails or more challenging ones to continue practicing and improving my skills. They are very good. However for being such a beautiful place trail along the park could be better, although I don’t want to but giving it one star less so somethings would change hopefully. After parking and walking on the trail a bit, trail suddenly disappears and now you end up walking on the road. This can be dangerous and unsafe for both walkers, joggers, pets and surely not easy for drivers. Although the traffic is less yet it calls for a nice trail whenever is next renovation effort. This would also make it more accessible to people and safer to enjoy this very beautiful place. We got lucky with parking. Only spent about an hour hiked from parking all the way to what is called a Z dam. You get to hear roaring James River watch the water rushing through rapids and may be spend some time on the huge rocks along the river. If you are a birder this is beautiful place for that too. We spotted blue heron and few other birds along the way. Hope you enjoy this park in your next visit.

If you continue on the gravel path it will loop back on the other side of the island near the power plant. For something different (tad more strenuous) you might take one of the inner paths up and over the center of the island. The usher's the security everyone who worked at this theater was outstanding in customer service. They were friendly helpful professional and courteous honestly there's not enough words to say how wonderful the staff was at this theater. The theatre itself is absolutely gorgeous inside and it was cool that some of the staff knew the history of it so we were able to actually get information about the venue as well as enjoy the view. I had never been to this venue before and from now on if there is something I want to see at this venue I absolutely will go because the staff was amazing I actually want to see them again as much as any performance I go to see.

Parking was difficult even though we got there 6PM on Saturday. Someone damaged their car trying to park. We didn’t expect to wait over an hour just to get in. There was one metal detector total and only one security guard letting people through it. The poor old man in front of us was getting tired being in line, but when his family asked if he had somewhere to sit down they said no. The crowd for the Japanese garden was so thick that you had to walk single file in a certain direction on a narrow path. There were a lot of people trying to get photos at the best photo ops at the same time. There was a trolley, however, we waited and decided to go on foot both up and down the Japanese garden because it was taking too long to wait for it. It wasn’t a stroller friendly path— they have a spot for stroller parking but it was not monitored. The path up and down the Japanese garden was very steep. As for the Glow Village, there was a big line for the circular glowing swings and other actives. There were also very limited food tables and seating. And only a handful of food trucks total to choose from. They were way understaffed, and you couldn’t easily tell who was part of the staff. Overall, I can’t recommend going to this event due to it being oversold, overcrowded, and not accessibility friendly especially for seniors, children and people with mobility issues. I doubt we will come back in the future.

The VITA trail is one mile and has different fitness stations along the way. It is a scenic trail with even terrain. I enjoy taking my son out on the trail in his stroller. It is a half mile around and has benches all along the perimeter in case you just want to sit and take in the scenery. Also, Fountain Lake is the only spot in the area that I have found that has a building with restrooms. Swan Lake is stunning, but the sidewalk does tend to be dirty on account of the birds. Definitely worth visiting though. Swan Lake is serene. Byrd Park also has other neat areas to visit, such as the Virginia War Memorial and the Dogwood Dell Amphitheater (which I believe hosts concerts during the summer). Overall, I am a huge fan of Byrd Park. It is family friendly, great for walks, playing, or just sitting and taking in the beautiful scenery!

I’m not endorsing one way or another to get to Texas Beach. However, once you get there, it’s a beautiful hike. It’s about an hour in and out, the start point being the north point park. There are sandy spots to post up and swim. It was my first time here and there were only a few people that I saw the entire time. It’s a lot of fun to feel that far in the wild while being in the city. There are ruins of an old mill, lots of bridges, AND a copious amount of snakes (I saw a three footer). Well on one of our weekends we went to Richmond and decided to live it up a little with a rafting trip of the lower James with RVA Paddlesports. What a freaking great experience this was. Although I grew up using canoes and have great deal of experience white water canoeing, neither of us have ever been whitewater rafting. RVA and thier crew were amazing from start to finish. Getting us outfitted with proper safety gear, providing safety briefs, history stories as we bused to our drop in site, along with a bunch of other little things that just made a ton of difference to the experience. Our team lead for our raft was Taylor. He does this on the side while his primary gig is a PA in the tidewater area. You never would have guessed that he did anything other than guide and raft. This dude was a rock star. We are very thankful we ended up in his raft. THANK YOU TAYLOR. Oh, and if I did not mention it at @RVA, Taylor deserves a raise! Our guide was Noa and they were incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and a pleasure to work with. The upper river offered nice nature views and swimming areas while the lower river had more city skyline views, and consistent small rapids. The company claims the lower river consists of class two and some class three rapids however this river experience most definitely maxes out at class two. Additionally, some photos are taken and offered to you after the trip however, each photo cost $15 apiece which after the cost of the rafting trip is highly excessive so I recommend screenshots and ignoring the watermark. Overall, the trip was fun and something I would definitely recommend as a first rafting experience or taking children on.
