This was after paying the $5 plus tax for parking. It was very disappointing to see the well made signs telling visitors it was closed; this situation has obviously existed for a while. With that being the case, why wasn't this information posted on their website? They also do a very poor job of showing first time visitors where all the different trails begin. Only one trail starts after the sign "Trails Begin Here". All in all very disappointing trip that we will not be making again. Scenery/Atmosphere: My god is it so gorgeous, the view of Birmingham never gets old, the park usually is pretty old due to the railroad history it used to have and that makes it interesting for people to learn, there are structures too but you probably shouldn't stand or go near it for obvious reasons. It is the best view in Birmingham. The museum is great for folks who want to learn more about the history of The Steel City and history of the Vulcan. The scavenger hunt for children is very fun and a nice little touch to add to the experience. The gift shop has a nice variety of souvenirs and gifts at a reasonable price. Be sure and get a squished penny from the crank machine as you’re leaving, it will cost ya two quarters and of course, one penny. It’s a wonderful keepsake. The restrooms are very clean and well stocked and there’s a water fountain that is in working order and very clean. The trip to the top of the Vulcan consists of 108 stairs, if you choose to skip the elevator or it isn’t working. It’s worth the climb. Go at sunset you’ll see beauty that’s unexplainable. The meeting spaces are perfect for conferences and really any social or corporate event. I have attended several here and they’re always beautiful and fun with plenty of space for guests, catering, and all vendors to operate. It’s a beautiful setting.

I walked up the entire tower by staircase, as the elevator seemed fast & I have a fear of heights. It's a place we have enjoyed many memories together as a family. However, this past visit (Saturday 8/10/25) was disappointing. The wait wasn't bad, there was just one person in front of us in line. The children's discounted price listed online didn't reflect the children's discounted price actually charged (It was just a couple of dollars different, so I let it slide) There weren't hardly any animals. No seals, we didn't see any alligators (like we normally do), there weren't any tigers, there weren't any rhinos, only one male lion, only one zebra, only one elephant. The few animals they did have looked sad and/or agitated (it showed in the eyes, body language, and action). It normally takes us a couple hours to enjoy the zoo but this time it took us around 30 minutes. I was excited to go with my grandson for his first visit to the zoo, but it was disappointing not to be able to see a lot of the animals we love to see. I hope the zoo can acquire various animals and enough so the animals won't be lonely. I hope things turn around,I would hate for a place that holds so many memories to close.

You don't have to be a baseball nerd or fan of American history to love this venue. Thanks to MLB it has been restored to it's greatness as America's first ballpark. The venue is amazing. Haven't been since my childhood as we lived in East Lake and that was THE park to take your children to go play. It's a mile all the way around the lake, which is cushioned with the tiny gravel. You can walk out onto to the pier above the water to fish or rest. There is one with a gazebo covering it for a shady, tranquil spot. There are benches on the shady side of the lake. Unfortunately, the giant spray of water is no longer there in the middle. I guess the pump stopped working. I saw tennis courts in one area and several playground areas for the kids. I found where they had planted new trees as some of the older ones are no longer there. During this visit, there is a giant tree that must have fallen during one of the recent storms. Would love to see this area cleaned up a little more and the lights that go around the lake replaced. The original stonework bridge that used to be the main entrance off 1st Ave is still there. There were city workers there replacing boards on one of the piers, so I know they are trying. This area is handicap accessible as it all flat terrain and there are small ramps in several places to get onto the walk way around the lake. Not sure about restrooms, but there is a nearby building with seating and picnic tables and I thought this also may have held the public restrooms as well. I'll have to make another trip to explore the rest of the park. There are several ways to get into the park. I got off at I-59 Oporto Madrid exit and turned onto 4th and then 80th and there were parking spots and easy access to the lake right there. But, I noticed many possible parking areas and ways into the park itself. As far as ♿️ accessibility, this would be fairly easy to get around. If you use a walker or cane, it is also accessible and level, so it would be an easy way to get some steps in with a pretty nice view of the water the entire time. This is also the 3rd park I have seen the yellow headed heron. Which seems unusual to me as I've never noticed or seen them in any area before until this year. But, a gentleman stopped his bike ride through the park to show me where their nesting. So, maybe it's not as uncommon as I thought or maybe I'm just starting to notice these beautiful birds. As you can see from my pictures, there are lots of ducks and their babies this time of year. They weren't afraid and just sat for their portraits. Except for one mallard that took flight right as I tried to take his picture. The turtles also were camera shy, but there were plenty sunning themselves on water logged branches. Would love to see some flowers added to this park to increase bees and butterflies.

There is a bridge when you make it around the lake but a pretty steep hill to get back to flat land. There is no shade until you make it halfway around. There you'll find a bench in the trees. You can continue on to go all the way around the lake. There is plenty of tennis courts available and a little stretch, workout station directly behind the courts. There were covered pavilions with lots of picnic tables. There was an Eagle project that no longer exists. Apparently, the tree was cut down that consisted of the hammock garden. The Rotary Club built a butterfly garden, but there were very few flowers except for Lantana and but the garden needs attention desperately. Overall, lovely park with the ability to be even better. First some trees need to be planted for these hot summers. Pave it for accessibility to everyone and so none of your runners break a leg in the massive ruts along the trail. Lighting would be a nice touch for those who like to walk at dusk. There is a tunnel under the road rhat went towards Spain Park parking lot or athletic complex. We found a bridge with lots of stairs leading upwards and believe it went to the high school. So, we took photos and moved on. There is a concessions stand that must only be open for events, but this is where you'll find the restrooms. 3 stars is bc it is accessible in some places, but not others who are independent but dependent on wheelchairs, canes, or prosthetics. I realize there could be more work being completed later and will revise my review when I visit again. Please consider paving it and adding lights, as well as some fast growing trees to provide more shade during these brutal Southern summers. Oh, I used the family restroom and this was the first time I had seen a motorized changing area. Brilliant idea. The Veteran's area is quite nice. Plaques telling who donated, etc.

There’s tons of walkways and places to rub/walk. There’s ponds all around too, so there’s a ton of wildlife. I liked how there were things to do around the part too, so you can grab a coffee and walk around, go to a baseball game or go grab a beer or bite to eat. Super kid and dog friendly, great place to visit if you’re stopping by Birmingham.
