I highly recommend you order online or through the Zippy's app. Walking to the takeout side to order and wait for your food is exceptionally long, especially at dinner. It's much easier to order through the app and, when it's ready, grab it from the locker.
Thursday night, it seemed chill, with not too many people ordering or waiting for food. However, online orders were queued in between the person in front of me and my own. I counted eight other online or app orders before I finally got my food. It was very frustrating.
As for the food, Zippy's is a local staple that has been around for generations. There are many classics on their menu, and I got two of them: a Zip Pac, but I replaced the teri beef with hoki. I also got an apple napple for dessert.

Note that there is a sit-down restaurant side and a fast food/bakery side. We ate at the sit-down side. We really enjoyed the food. We had many other recommended dishes at restaurants that were supposed to be great but many of them were frankly worse than Zippy’s. The fried chicken and the chili cheese fries are great. The baked goods were a bit too sweet for us. The zip pac was good.

We had a great night! We loved our meal - the strip steak I think -which was $60 roughly. It came with rice, miso soup and breaded prawns cooked on the grill… drinks were fairly priced…we were the only westerners there. I’ve been eating at Ono, Marukai, Fresh Catch and Giovanni Shrimp food truck and honestly Maguro Brothers CHINATOWN LOCATION has been the highlight of my trip.
It was so good- we went back for a second time and the employees recognized us.
We went to the Waikiki location in hopes that they would also have the chef’s omakase. It does not.
Fairly priced, FRESH and SO GOOD.
I’ll be missing this spot when I go back home.
The only downside is that Chinatown in Honolulu is a tad sketch in some areas making me feel queasy at times. 🥲

Had dinner at Doraku tonight and we had such a great experience! The manager Micah, and our server Steffen were both so accommodating and made sure we were taken care of the entire time. My partner and I have been to Doraku a few times now, and the reason we keep coming back is because of the consistently great service and delicious food!!
We ordered calamari, oysters, grilled squid (so tender!) , hamachi, and garlic steak everything tasted amazing! What really stood out was how attentive both the manager and our server were, constantly checking in to make sure we had everything we needed.
Customer service matters more to me than anything else! And doraku always goes above and beyond. You can really tell they care about their guests and take pride in what they do. The tables are small and the portions are small that they could be shareable, but you would definitely need more than a few plates amongst a few people. While I noted gluten free needs before coming and again upon arriving there were many mix ups. This is a serious issue for many and while I spoke about this multiple times during ordering and once items came out, I have to say this place is not somewhere I can come back to 2 orders came out not gluten free… and I’m paying for it.

while we were told we were ordering 2 orders of 2 “pieces” of salmon sashimi they got the order wrong and we were slammed with a bill much much greater than what was expected. We did not eat the extra pieces of sashimi that erroneously came with the order but we still had to pay…
2 stars for the food: I will say the mushroom order & salmon carpaccio was good, but everything else had a strong taste of toxic, fragranced dish soap. (The natto rolls, the squid) I truly try to make the best of meals so I squeezed a lot of lemon and put salt on it.
Very disappointed & my guest and I felt unwell that evening and the morning after…
I had high hopes because reviews were promising but this was a let down to be quite honest!
The server did said she tried to communicate our needs but when we pointed out the salmon order was wrong she said “sorry” with no action to rectify her mistake.

I’ve been here on three different trips and I’ve never been disappointed! The crunch on this tempura is truly like no other, and the oil flavor is very clean.
I’d recommend dining in over getting takeout (pictured), but if you have limited time/don’t want to wait 1+ hour during peak wait times, takeout is a good option. The only con is that the crunch quickly gets soggy in the takeout box and you don’t get the special rice or soup that’s included in the dine-in experience. It’s definitely worth it to wait if you have the time.
Another pro to dining in is the sesame seed grinding for your tonkatsu sauce. The aroma is very fresh and unique! You can choose between the sweet and savory sauce to dip, and I liked a combination of both.
We ordered a 5pc shrimp katsu set (pictured), 1pc pork katsu, 1pc oyster katsu, clam miso soup (seasonal), and the seaweed rice. The shrimp tempura is a shared favorite between my mom and I, but the pork and oyster are great too.
For drinks, I’d recommend the grapefruit shochu as a fresh, fruity cocktail to enjoy alongside the katsu. It’s manufactured in California so you can probably find it on the mainland as well, but I think any fizzy drink will complement the fried tempura nicely.
Staff and atmosphere are friendly, clean, and pleasant. While dining in, the servers walk around with a basket of shredded cabbage and were kind enough to give me 3 extra handfuls to enjoy with their delicious sesame dressing.
I will be coming back for my 4th visit soon!

I only speak on behalf of ourselves but the hour wait was worth it. I probably wouldn’t wait for more than that. We arrived a little before 4pm and there was already a line so definitely recommend going 15 mins beforehand to possibly get a seat during the first round. Once the restaurant is filled, it’s about 45 mins - an hour wait before you’re seated. Tip: if you’re wait is minimum 1 hour and you really want to dine here suggest going next door to the Thai massage to kill some time. Prices there are very reasonable but can’t comment on whether it’s good.
Now to the important part - the food.
Once we sat down, they take your order (we got the 300gm tonkatsu (enough to split between two). It comes with miso soup, side of cabbage and rice.
They then provide you a hot towel to wipe your hands with and then they bring out some appetisers and a small bowl of sesame for you to grind (great activity esp when you’re waiting for your food!)
The pork was crumbed well and did not taste overly oily however the meat itself was a bit on the dry lean side.
Overall, great service and great food!
There’s a parking lot downstairs - if you enter before 4pm it’s US$1 per hour for the first 2 hours if you get your ticket validated at the restaurant and US$1.50 every 30 mins thereafter. If you enter the carpark from 4pm onwards it’s US$4 per hour

We came here tonight as walk-ins and were told it would be about a 30-minute wait, then to come back at 8:15. When we asked if they could take our number to call when a table was ready, the host (Ethan) said no, but confirmed we could leave and return then. We came back at 8:10 to find multiple parties who arrived after us already seated. He claimed he had called our names—even though he explicitly told us we could step out.
I gave him direct feedback that if they don’t take phone numbers, it’s his responsibility to tell guests not to leave. There was no effort to be accommodating, no accountability, and no urgency to seat us even as several tables sat empty long after “reservations” were supposedly due. My and my wife went there for lunch. It was my first time and I was really excited. My wife however, had been to Gyu-Kaku a few times in the past. Our server mentioned that we could eat all we wanted (based on the package we selected), but if the food were left over, we’d need to pay for it, which we found fair. The quantity was fine and we didn’t have any leftovers. However, I liked just 25% of the items we ordered and didn’t like others. Specially, it was very difficult for us to cook the meat on the grill because it kept sticking and getting burnt. We did ask our server to grease it again but that didn’t help. We love this place. They were so efficient about the vaccine mandate info gathering. The staff is really helpful and friendly. Cooking at your own table is really cool. Heard about this place from my brother. Since my favorite foods are curry and katsu I had to try it. Found out it originated in Japan, so I had high expectations. The curry was good but the katsu detracted from the dish. I had the tonkatsu and my wife had the chicken katsu, but wasn't up to Japan standards. Additionally both had a burnt taste. My favorite Japanese Curry spot! They are located in McCully Shopping center. They have take out and dine in options. The seating area has choice of counter with view of the kitchen or booths. The staff is nice and sat us right away. I like to try different options all the time, but I recommend adding cheese with anything! This time we ordered Chicken Cutlet curry with cheese and kimchi, pork cutlet curry with cheese and gyoza, plain curry udon, shabu shabu beef and spinach udon with cheese, fried scallops and Baby tako. Curry House (Coco Ichibanya) is a local staple for a lot of people that have grown up here. I remember coming here often after school, after important events, or even after sports practice to get a quick dinner before I started my homework for the evening.
This location is in McCully Shopping Center. Do not confuse it with the location at Ala Moana which is only a few minutes down the road. This location is definitely a bit bigger and conceit more people. Plus, the AC is cooler at this location.
The staff here are always very nice and quite efficient when it comes to ordering and preparing the food. The prices are reasonable, especially considering the price of anything else nowadays. I usually don't spend more than $20 per person whenever we come here.
This time, I decided to get a Tonkatsu curry with cheese and it definitely hit the spot.
When it comes to parking, it can be a bit hard to find on the surface level due to some of the construction, but there is also parking in the underground structure around the corner. You can also use the elevator from the underground parking structure if there are mobility concerns.
Overall, I recommend stopping in if you like Japanese curry, and are in the area.

What happened? I used to love their chicken katsu, but they went and got cheap. The chicken katsu is dry and sliced so thin that there's more breading than meat. It's an illusion when you think your getting a good portion, but in actuality you're getting one chicken breast that was sliced thin enough to make 3 pieces. auwe! what's a little more subtle is their containers have shrunk as well to try and not draw attention to the smaller portions of their loco moco and mochiko chicken. Hands down probably one of my favorite spots to get plate lunches from when I'm in town area. Their food choices are great and so are the people working there. Takes a little long but that place is always busy from time to time but it's worth it. My wife always orders her usual Pork chops with gravy all over while I always stick to their garlic chicken plate. Just heard on the news that Meg's Drive-In is closing after Decades of service to the community. I rushed down this afternoon to get my favorite beef Curry and chicken katsu mix plate. I haven't been there in a while so I found out the new thing is that there's an upcharge for use of credit card not debit card also 50 Cent more if you want french fries.
The plate lunch was exactly how I remembered it. Krunchy chicken katsu over a small bit of cabbage, mac salad or in my case some toss greens and beef Curry, Siri and not spicy. I must say the Wagyu katsu Sando is the TRUTH, the crispness of the crust around the burger gives it a delightful sensation when biting into the burger. The burger itself was incredibly juicy and moist all the way through, it was so good 👍. I tried the egg salad sandwich which was tasty and a good deal for the price. Get the tonkatsu sandwich. The tonkatsu was fried nicely and the met was juicy, not dry or too tough at all. The bread they use for their sandwiches are soft, fresh and crustless!
