Every year, I've been trying to play University Ridge in Madison and for the past 6 years of trying to play, I was always met with the course either being 100% booked, closed for an event, hosting tournaments or league night. So, for 6 years, I've been trying to play this course, and today, I finally made it happen! And it was worth the persistence and wait! University Ridge has constantly ranked among the top courses in WI and Midwest. It plays host to the Champion's Tour's American Family Championship since 2016 and is home of the U of WI Badgers golf team. Everything about this club is top-notch! The proshop is well stocked with a great variety of top brands and products. The bar & and restaurant have great food and drinks, with nice views down 1 and 9. The practice range is one of the nicest around and rivals any private club in the area. I was paired with 3 college students, and the course was fairly full, being the only nice day in the forecast this week (50° and sunny with little wind). We played in about 4:10 and the pace was just fine; being cart path only didn't help with pace at all, but it gave me the opportunity to snap a ton of pictures without hindering anyone's pace. What I loved about the course was the diverse mix of holes and elevation changes. At no point did the course feel repetitive or boring. For early April, the conditions were as good as anyone could ask for, other than some snow lingering in shaded areas. University Ridge rose to my favorite Madison golf course today. It's so hard to list favorite Wisconsin courses as the state is littered with amazing golf courses! But if I had to, it's top 10 for sure and should be on your radar if you haven't played it.

Tiny parking lot, fifty yards to the club house. Club house like my grand parents played. Beer on tap. Quiet and peaceful inside with great staff. My snob golf friends heard it's easy and short. I told them you may be surprised. Sure enough they did bad because they want to go far rather than straight and play strategically. This course will eat you up if you get cocky. It's also for laid back people who aren't in a rush and who are beginners or are old and beaten up. I always feel I'm on vacation here. I suggest Door Creek Golf Course which is way prettier, roomier, more playable, in better condition, and a costs less.

I’ve played the 18-hole Championship course a few times. All of the rain this summer has really helped and things look nice and green. However, there’s quite a bit of standing water throughout the course in some places — seems like maybe it’s taking a day or two to drain out. Most of the bunkers were in a bit of rough shape. Quite a bit of erosion and hadn’t been raked even by the end of the day. Of course, if you stay out of them, it’s not a problem. Several greens looked like a war zone with divots all over the place. There’s also a driving range a short cart ride from the clubhouse. We played as a 2-some for a twilight round and they didn’t require us to pair up, despite other 2-somes and a solo player all arriving around the same time. I appreciated this. I’ve been paired up before at Door Creek during busy times, but it’s nice that at a slower time in the day, they allowed us all to have separate tee times so long as we were ok with waiting.

We drove into Madison expecting a quiet Sunday visit when we discovered "Taste of Madison" street festival was in full swing. I was glad to see the "People's House" open to the public so my wife and I availed ourselves to it's majesty. Bland in taste but my favorite of everything I ate were the fries. By no fault of its own, my only complaint is the distance this course is from home. Well worth the 90 minute drive if you plan to play a few rounds. The course is built on a hill and your first concrete tee shot it looking up into a nice backdrop of trees. From there, you'll play across the hill zigzagging your way up. After hole 5, you begin your trek into the woods where more technical shots begin and it isn't just a game of who can throw the farthest. With both short and long tee pads coupled with dual pin placements, this course offers multiple unique ways to play the course that might never get old. This course is great for beginners and skilled disc golfers. The course is pay to play which helps in the maintenance and up keep of the fairways and signage. Signage is in good shape and calls out distance for all tee pad and pin placements. They also include "Next Tee" on the signs, though I would forget to look until it was too late. There are also walking paths running through the course so if you do forget to check the sign for the next tee, there are a few holes that get confusing after completing (7 to 8 and 17 to 18 to be specific for first time players). The course was clean of garbage and well kept. Grass was cut and the fields were not yet overgrown. I imagine by mid summer the overgrown fields, on the more open holes, will add some complexity to the fairways. For those local aged golfers, I love that the historic tumbledown trails sign was still up and you could tell still playingsome of the original hole remnants. Downside....I thought the green fees were high for a "short" course, not nice electric carts, still growing in from opening last year, and rough in spots. I personally would've rather had tee markers but the constant visitor I could see benefits of teeing where ever to try to change it up. The brand new clubhouse isn't going to open for about another month or 2. The greens. Omg those made it. You can tell they put a lot of effort into those making the putting difficult. This one in the pic was unique with rough island in the greenside bunker and another bunker in the middle of the green. There are tons of hiking trails. Some get more congested than others, especially on the more beautiful days. I like going in the evening when it's a little cooler on hotter days. You can ride your bike down the concrete road that runs through it as well. Many, many people do. So if you show up in the evening and need to use one, there are two to choose from. I don't know when they empty them, but they have been there for a long time so I assume weekly or something. Also, you have to watch for animals on the road and along the path as well. There is a section that has a posted sign telling you to watch for turtles and there are lots of wild turkeys that run around sometimes too. Sometimes I'll see a bunch and sometimes I won't see any, but they are definitely there. They don't typically harass people but it's not wise to provoke them either.
