A peaceful and memorable visit to Madurai Meenakshi Temple
I recently visited the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple and it was a beautiful experience. The temple is grand and full of history, with amazing carvings and colorful towers. At the moment, the towers are under renovation and painting work is going on, so most of them are covered. Still, the temple’s beauty and energy can be felt everywhere.
Inside, the atmosphere is calm and spiritual. The darshan of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar felt very peaceful. Even though it was crowded, everything was fairly well organized.
One thing to be careful about — there are a lot of people outside trying to mislead visitors, especially auto drivers and some shopkeepers. They might say there’s no cloakroom inside, but don’t believe that. There are official cloakrooms near all four temple towers where you can safely keep your slippers and mobile phones.
Overall, it was a meaningful visit and a reminder of how rich and alive our traditions still are.

An ancient Vishnu temple. Lord's name is Koodalalagar (கூடலழகர்) and goddess (Lakshmi) name is Madhuravalli (மதுரவல்லி). This temple is one of the 108 vaishnava Divya desams (வைஷ்ணவ திவ்ய தேசம்). Here lord is blessing in 3 postures under single vimanam. The main god (மூலவர்) Koodal alagar with sridevi and bhudevi blesses in sitting posture(அமர்ந்த கோலம்) in first floor. This is the only temple among 108 divya desams where navagraha sannadhi is there. Daily morning around 5.30AM, they will bring a cow inside the temple and make it to stand before the lord as backside of the cow facing towards the lord. So, when the doors of the perumal shrine are opened, lord sees the cow first as goddess lakshmi is residing on the cow's backside. Every Friday morning abishekam is performed for Madhuravalli thaayar and Aandal naachiyar. It is believed that going pradakshinas around vimanam 12 times for 48 days continuously will fulfill their wishes. Every year on the tamil month of margazhi 27th day koodaravalli festival is celebrated. On that day, morning around 6.30AM maalai maatrudal (மாலை மாற்றுதல்) is performed for Perumal and Aandal nachiyar. The temple is located in the center of the city. Walkable distance from Periyar bus stand. Railway station is also near from this temple. Nearby temples are: Hayagrivar temple, madhana gopala swamy temple, immaiyilum nanmai tharuvaar (shiva) temple.

Arulmigu Koodal Azhagar Temple in Madurai is a truly divine and peaceful place to visit. The temple architecture is stunning, especially the colorful gopuram with its detailed carvings, which looks even more beautiful when lit up at night.

Do not visit this place
until they finish their renovation. It’s total waste of money and time. On each side of main building which is under renovation, there are two galleries. One is paid and another is either free or included in the price. Staffs at both centre were taking their mid noon nap and was not bothered to greet or say hello. All what’s on display was in a very bad state. There were lots of spelling mistakes on all the writings. Someone accountable, please have a look. This is not what a Gandhi Museum in India should look like even when it’s on renovation. Very very very disappointed and has never seen anything pathetic like this.

Main museum is under renovation (it was supposed to have reopened by now), government museum is often closed depending on the day, and the only thing to see is a small exhibit on the Indian independence movement, a replica of Gandhi’s house, and a shrine that (supposedly) contains some of his ashes. Worth 30-45 minutes if you’re already in the area otherwise skip it - you can get the same information about Gandhi online quite easily. Also why is there a giant T-Rex at a Gandhi memorial? Seems a bit distasteful.

I visited this place on 17th July 2025. There was only a small gallery where you could learn about india's journey from when the britishers started colonising to the independence period.. it would take 30- 40 mins to see this gallery. A lot of history that we learned in school and more can be understood from here. In addition to this there is a small museum that was open. There is also a small memorial where Gandhijis ashes are kept. However, the main museum was closed for renovation. Based on my interaction with one staff member, it seems the closed part of the museum would re-open on 2nd October 2025. Pls check with the latest info.. i have seen many reviewers criticizing the staff working there. However, i never faced any issues and the staff were very polite.

The gallery for the Gandhi Memorial Museum has been moved to a temporary location due to renovations. A worker there confirmed the renovation was complete but said the date of inauguration is not fixed.
They have some labelled pictures depicting various milestones of Freedom struggle. That's about it. This is likely due to the makeshift location. I would wait for them to inaugurate the actual museum.
The labelling of the pictures needs more attention to detail. There were too many spelling errors. This lack of attention to detail is unacceptable for an institution dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi Ji. In addition, given that this place attracts so many foreign guests, it doesn't put us in positive light.

A temple pond complex with a man-made island in the middle. A great venue for spending the evening in Madurai and enjoying with snacks. One has to bargain a lot with Autos to reach here or while going back to your stay.
This place is a hot spot for all the local ppl with walking area around the pond and which lighted up in the evening. Many ladies were seen enjoying their evening with mirchi bhajji or fruit chat or other snacks which are available from the different carts. Children were playing nearby in narrow pathway.
Boating facility is available but during my trip it was not operating. Otherwise one can reach to the temple and explore that also. But luckily I witnessed beautiful sunset.

The visit to the Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple was an incredible experience but was under construction and maintenance. The main entrance was closed until 14.07.2025. They have special darshan ticket of 100rs.
The temple is beautiful but also has a sense of divinity. I wonder and am amazed by the stunning architecture.

The atmosphere was serene, The temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan. The sculptures were a feast for the eyes.

The drinks are not soo expensive they charge around Rs.220/60ml and they also give around 3-4 complimentary snacks along with the drink.
