The parking is pretty tight as you just pull over into any dirt spot you can find and make sure you're not sticking out into the road. The trail from the road down to the old sugar mill and back, had us at about 6 miles while checking out some of the small outlets. It is all downhill from the road so you'll have a bit of a hike back up but it was a beautiful trail. We spotted lots of hermit crabs and even a few Mongooses. The sugar mill ruins are very cool to see and the beach seems to only be able to be accessed via hiking or boating. Make sure to pack some water it is a good amount in the shade but gets hot quickly.

It's such a beautiful hike I can see why so many people enjoy it. We are fairly active and had no difficulty with the steeper parts - just a little winded at times. It was a perfect day - Low 80s with a nice breeze. I could see it being more challenging if it were really hot. The trail is in very nice condition. There are a few rocky spots and its likely to be slippery when wet but I would not hesitate to do it again. There are some lovely views, as well as some interesting ruins from the former sugar plantations. It is well shaded, which makes its a pleasant trail on a sunny day. As advised, be sure to bring some water and perhaps a few snacks. Next time we would likely go the rest of the way to the coast (we had plans to swim at Maho Bay so we decided to go as far as the Petroglyphs).

We did a day trip to St. John, then a tour of the island. Honestly, when you've seen one Virgin Island (whether US or British), you've seen them all. The terrain is basically identical. Unfortunately, a lot of the houses and businesses are still in disrepair after the hurricanes of a few years ago. I can certainly understand this as getting anything to these islands is a difficult, expensive task, not counting how expensive basic building materials are in the first place. The nicest thing about any of these islands is the water, which is why the majority of people go there. It is stunningly beautiful. The white sand beaches contrast with the multi-hued water, ranging from a gorgeous green, to aqua to light blue to dark blue. And, the water is crystal clear. No wonder these islands are a divers (and snorkelers) paradise. Don't waste your time on island tours, there's just not a lot to see.

We booked Gallows point resort for 5 Days in August. We were excited to stay here after reading a lot of the other reviews. Upon checking in at 3 pm (check in time) we were told that our room was not ready yet due to som issues with the bathroom. We waited for an hour in the lobby in the sweltering heat until we were moved to a different room because the issue was still going on. Upon checking into the new room (4B) the smell of chemicals and cleaner was so strong we had to open all windows and leave the room for 3 hours while it aired out. The smell made both my wife and I ill. We waited by the pool for 2 hours, then went back to the room to try to get ready for our 630 dinner reservation at 1864 (which was absolutely amazing!) When we arrived back to the room it still smelled so we had to then shower and get ready in a room where the temperature was now over 90 degrees due to us having to have the windows open to air it out. The rooms are ok, the furniture def needs an upgrade in the living room but that wasn’t an issue, we could live with that. I will say the ONE positive thing was that when we got back from dinner and were able to shut the windows and turn on the AC, the AC was the best AC we experienced on our 14 day trip. Here’s where the nightmare really begins. We arrive home from dinner and rinse off and get ready to go to bed. Upon laying down on the mattress, we both knew were were in for a long night. The mattress was the worst mattress I’ve ever slept on and has to be at least 20 years old. It was awful. There was also an extremely bright light outside (resort light) that we had no way to block out or turn off. (Imagine trying to sleep in a tanning bed with the lights on and on your Grandmothers mattress). So my wife tossed and turned for a couple hours. You would think it couldn’t get any worse right? WRONG! Around 2am a loud beeping noise starts outside of our room and continues until 7am where we found out that this was due to something wrong with the sewer. This was the absolute worst night of sleep I have ever attempted, worse then sleeping on the floor of an airport overnight, worse then camping in sub zero weather, pure torture. At 7am we exit our room to see the workers. They apologized for the intrusion and began working on the sewer equipment to clear some sort of clog that the alarm was notifying them off. I carried all our our luggage to the front desk, explained that we would be checking out and moving to a new hotel due to the torturous night we experienced here. The lady at the front desk was very apologetic and nice and we were on our way. One week later I checked the hotel bill and noticed we did not receive any type of refund for the remaining nights that we did not stay there. I contacted the front office thinking this must be some kind of oversight. I figured it would be worked out easily and we could move on. WRONG. Apparently it states “ No refunds for early departures will be issued.” listed in the cancelation policy. So I’m being charged $2000,00 because I refused to endure 4 more continued nights of torture at their resort. This place is an absolute scam, DO NOT STAY here. In the end, even if they would have told me upon checking out that I wasn’t going to get my money back, I still would have left and made the same decision I did because no one should have to endure the type of torture you will endure if you choose to try to get some rest at this resort. I’ll be contacting my credit card company and reporting this scam. What a wonderful way to spend our anniversary. Do check out the wharfside village. It’s a lovely hotel

For the times where we wanted to go further inland, the resort was able to help us call reputable taxis, so we never worried about our safety. I was speaking with one of the shop keepers and they said the complex was built in the 1980s and is still owned and maintained by the same man. He still activly maintains the property himself, and you can tell. The whole place is a labor of love; fitting for St. John. If you are looking for unique jewelry, clothing, and more, this is your spot.

Virgin Islands National Park is number 57 out of 63 for me, and honestly, it’s one of the best I’ve visited so far. We flew into STT (St. Thomas) on May 19, 2025, and took the ferry from Red Hook. It cost a $3 port fee, but we weren’t told about the additional $65 round-trip cash fee until we were already on the ferry to St. John. Once on the island, we drove all around and hiked five different trails—some moderately challenging. I highly recommend: • Lind Point Trail to Honeymoon Beach – very quiet and peaceful in the early morning, with stunning water colors. • Salomon Beach – great for snorkeling. • Ram Head Trail – incredible ocean views from up high and rich historical significance; you can go from white sandy beaches to coral reefs in just a few minutes’ walk. • Trunk Bay Underwater Snorkel Trail – hands down the most beautiful ocean water I’ve ever seen; the sand feels like butter, and the color of the ocean shifts from vibrant turquoise to deep blue. Entry is $5 per person. • Reef Bay Trail & Petroglyph Trail – fun and a bit challenging. About 13,000 steps round trip, including stops at the Petroglyphs and Sugar Mill ruins. Well-marked and easy to follow. Be sure to stop by the Visitor Center—the rangers and volunteers are friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. We learned a lot about the park’s history and got up-to-date weather info. We lucked out with sunny skies, but the mosquitoes and sand fleas definitely treated us like an all-you-can-eat buffet! We stocked up on food, drinks, and supplies in Cruz Bay—there’s not much available between there and the trailheads. It made for a perfect day trip in the park. St. John is incredibly charming, especially downtown, with its colorful shops, bars, jewelry stores, and gift shops. My favorite part? The ice cream! We ended our day with a late dinner at The Morgan’s Mango—pricey as hell, but totally worth it. We’re so happy to have explored this stunning national park. It truly is picturesque. The trailhead is located right behind the visitor center and across the small parking lot. This is the cheapest way to go to some of the beaches. There are some stairs going up which takes you to an access road and then you head up the road for maybe 100 feet and then the trail continues up again some more rustic stone steps. We were ready with Keens and other closed toe hiking/water sandals and had no problems with the trail. I would not recommend flipflops at all. We took the lower trail on the way to the beaches. Elevation wasn't terrible (you can check on alltrails). While the trail was maintained it was pretty rocky with very uneven footing at times. There are also multiple splits in the trail which aren't all posted on google or the park maps and the signage could be better. Because St. John is US territory, you can turn on your phone and get GPS location (we have verizon). This worked great for us. We stopped by Salomons beach first. It has multiple entrances and multiple trails from Lind Point to the beach. We got a little confused but all the trails from the Lower Lind Point will get you there. We then hiked over to Honeymoon beach. On the way back we hiked the upper Lind Point trail and stopped by the overlook for a couple mins. Great view. We had a 8, 11 and 14 yr old with us but we're also very outdoorsy and do lots of hiking. We went in with 3 backpacks with our towels, water, beach blanket and snorkel gear. Both beaches were amazing and even through we reached them around noon time, it wasn't SUPER crowded at the beach. We found spot to set up in the shade of some trees. We didn't look to hard but didn't notice any bathrooms either. Might want to go back at the visitor center before you start. We would definitely do this trail again as it was very interesting as we aren't used to the ecology of the area. There were many lizards, birds and cactus. Surprisingly we didn't encounter many flying insects either. Not a mosquito in sight.

Someone needs to go through with a machete and clear the way. Besides a workout, the reward is seeing and/or taking a dip at the Lameshur beach which is near one of the trailheads. The hike can be started from Calvert C. Marsh road where there is parking space for 1-2 vehicles only (see photo) or Coral Bay road where there is plenty of parking. Unless you are exploring all of the southeastern part of the island, for this trail alone it is better to start at the CC Marsh road as the other option is longer and requires driving on a bad dirt road (last part of Coral Bay road).

Squidville and Congo were our sites thanks to Aqua Josh, Michael and Gracie. Loved being able to tent camp just feet off the beach, falling asleep to tree frogs and waves. All the staff around the campground, cafe, gift shop, and front desk were very helpful. The coffee at the cafe was excellent and having filtered water available, was an unexpected treat. The location and ease of access to both sides of the island, or that crazy road up to Center Ridge Rd, made starting a days a breeze (island breeze). We visited most the beaches you could get to by car and found Cinnamon Bay to possibly be the nicest. After the day's crowd thins at 3pm for dinner, you have large swathes of the beach and ocean to yourself, with incredible views of Mary's Point. The servings at the cafe were incredibly generous for one, so we just split one of those at the end of the day. The bird talk hosted by friends of the USVI at the cafe was excellent. The campground bathrooms were always clean and hardly used except in the morning and evening, with showers (be sure to use these babies every night!). One of the best NPS camping experiences I've ever had, and couldn't recommend it enough. If you've managed to camp anywhere you might get an unexpected rain shower or bug bite, you'll have no problem and consider this lux. Swam with a sea turtle and five foot nurse shark, in view of our tent!

Astounding. Anyway, communal bathrooms are fine, biting bugs are horrid, everything is insanely expensive everywhere in USVI. Everything. The beach was marvelous, staff was fantastic. We were provided 1 fan for 2 rooms so we had to rent a fan. $50 for 5 nights. If we have 2 rooms, they should provide 2 fans. Anyway, we've been to many gorgeous tropical places in the world without biting bugs and also without such a high cost so do I recommend going somewhere else in the world? Yes. This is by a group of islands called Trunk Cay. It is a short swim out from the beach. If you review the park map, there are 3 plaques underwater that form a trail around the front. Fish are present, but not as may as near the rocks. You can sea a great may species of fish and some urchins around the rocks/coral. I liked the Parrotfish as they were the most colorful. Be careful of the currents as they can (and will) push you around. Be aware of time you spend there. I was out so long, my wife thought I drowned.

We walked into Cruz Bay and home every evening for drinks/dinner. The road down is ~.2 miles and is a steeper hill so easier down then up but for us it was very manageable and it had nice views along the short walk and saved us the hassle of finding a place to park or wait for a taxi. Would be a tough walk if you have bad knees however but taxis are easy to come by and its a very short trip into town. Hiking and beaches right outside the hotel. Though located on the main road, we never heard cars driving by, though sounds from cruz Bay would travel up the hills pretty easily, yet it was still quieter then being down on the bay itself. The Reef Bay Trail can be a little arduous, but it's definitely worth the effort. One thing worth noting is that the weather can drastically change the views. Usually the waterfall is pretty minimal or even completely dry. If you have the opportunity to visit after significant rainfall, I highly suggest it as the waterfall becomes an impressive sight in and of itself. However, if the flow is significant enough, it can cause the pool of water to rise enough to obscure the bottommost carvings.
