I opted for lamb, while they got beef. As you can see in the pic, it came with a very reasonable amount of veg (carrots, roasties, spring greens, parsnips and a bit of cauliflower cheese) as well as a perfectly acceptable Yorkshire pudding. It is about a 15 minute walk from the central mall shopping center, so it was definitely worth it if you are near there. The place was packed so I definitely recommend a reservation. The food was tasty and enough amount for the price. Also there is a wide selection of beers and IPAs. My udon salad was plentiful with some great flavours, the shitaki mushrooms and asparagus in it were nom. My own gripe was edename were swapped out with regular peas. Everyone was really happy with their food. Oh and the cauliflower starter was delicious too. I will say it can get quite loud easily due to the nature of the architecture. Croquetas (three kinds, the chunky prawn ones with seaweed mayo were our favourite, along with lovely slow-cooked pork cheeks in red wine, steak with chermoula, and some extraordinarily tasty chicken thighs in a garlic and sherry sauce. And then my veg came 10 mins later! £39 is totally over inflated for the price of my meal, because the conservative conference was in town! I ordered the Barnsley Chop. My friend had ordered the house pie, but was expecting at least some meat. The pie was mashed potatoes and cheese, no onion. She was hoping for at least chicken or steak. And she was charged £21 for a cheese and potato pie! I have to say I won’t be recommending Mr Thomas’s Chop House to anyone I’m afraid. I wasn’t impressed with the level of service or the lack of communication about the price of the menu. We should have been given the prices before we ate, instead they made it up to their liking. That’s really not the way to do business. We weren’t part of any political meeting, we were there on business, but nothing to do with what was happening in Manchester this week. I feel that the prices were inflated because of this, which was unfair. UPDATE We were not a party of 30, there was only about 20 of us, there was another group of people with a separate booking who were at our conference. Since the booking of the table to secure our Sunday roast during our staying at Manchester, until the closing of the bill. The environment is amazing. Very welcoming, comfortable and the Christmas decoration add a special touch to the meal. We’ve been here a few times for bottomless brunch and it’s been faultless, great value, great food and even better service. They also have a good happy hour on cocktails and pints. The food was fantastic, classic British menu done to perfection and it’s an absolute bargain in comparison to other pubs of a similar calibre in Manchester. The steak pie was full of meat and incredibly fresh and rich. It really superseded our expectations. Met with a lovely warm friendly welcome from all the staff upon entering, seated and looked after with lovely service the entire time we were in nothing too much trouble. Ordered a delicious roast beef with a side of pigs in blankets myself but our table had the range of Sunday roasts and was delicious, beef cooked pink as asked for, crispy roast spuds and a Yorkshire pudding that I'd be proud to present as a Yorkshireman to friends and family. The bill came splitting it between our friends was no problems and it was a very reasonable price for a city centre venue. Had some time to spare before getting a train from Oxford Road so thought we would spend it in here having a quick pint and ended up stopping for 3. Very welcoming towards us (I had 4 Under 18s in the group) but not a problem for them to be in the pub. The food- genuinely lovely, I can't fault the food as a party of 2 we ordered the bass, chicken skewers, sea bream, massam, onions rings and omelette and I would struggle to pick a favourite really similar to the quality food served in District. The service- With a booking at 13.30 on a Saturday if anything the service was a little fast, we had ate and settled up by 14:10. Although our waitress was personable and pleasant she didnt really explain the menu or how the restaurant reccomends ordering. So why 2 stars- We had ordered 2 drinks in the Edinburgh Castle downstairs and brought them up, I asked if this was ok and was told it was fine (no mention of a corkage charge). After leaving I noticed a charge "open drink" of £12.00 on our bill, something I think I would be ok with if mentioned/ highlighted in advance... .although disproportionally expensive in comparison to what we brought up and the price of drinks (we might as well have ordered 2 drinks in the retaurant). There was also a charge for a negroni on the bill for £11.50, this is something we didn't order or drink, in some ways it feels the oldest trick in the book and its almost my fault for not noticing but with an additional service charge of £11.63 (which I had at the time happily paid) on the total bill of £93.00 it seems 25% of the bill was incorrect charges. On balance I dont think we would return despite enjoying the food.
