The Macayos by Tempe Lake closed, so we tried this location. We went at approximately 4:00pm, on a Friday, about 2-3 weeks ago.
The atmosphere was decent.. The greeter was nice enough and started to wait on us. Then a different younger waiter took over and brought the food out. My husband ordered cheese enchiladas beans & rice, his food looked good.
I ordered the sampler, big mistake.
I think the problem was mostly with the chef. I asked for melted cheese (enchilada style) on the fried chimi/burros and was told beforehand I could.
When I got my sampler, it looked as if either the chef took "no pride" in his job, or he did not appreciate my "special" order and was punishing me...
The fried food was dry and looked overcooked. The special spinach con queso dip looked like old thick dry paste that had been sitting around exposed all day! I tasted it, hard to believe it was on the menu, I left it. I have a very strong feeling, done right, the dip would have been a different experience.
There was no "melted" cheese that I ordered. There was a very light scattering of mostly dry cheese. I could not believe that the chef would send it out this way and that the waiter would have the nerve to bring it to the table, the opposite of what I asked for?!
I reminded the waiter and pointed at my husbands cheesey enchilada. It looked NOTHING close...crumbs of cheese. This was approximately a $20 plate, the guacamole and dip were unremarkable.
I sent it back and waited some 20 minutes!! They brought me back the same looking super light unmelted sprinkle of cheese!!! What did I wait all of that TIME, 20 MINUTES for??? I can only surmise that this was purposely done by an arrogant a-s of a chef! When I questioned the waiter, he said, "We really don't do it that way." Huh?
Charge more if you must... DO NOT PLAY PUNISHING GAMES WITH YOUR GUESTS! Can you afford to throw away such business in these tough turbulent times?
My husband said, "I wouldn't send it back again honey, who knows what they might do, next?" He motioned that they might pee in my food or something of that nature...
I was VERY UNHAPPY with my meal and ANGRY that they treated me so badly, especially on my husband's $$$ dollar.
Why the chef and waiter could not see to simply melting an OUNCE or two of cheese on my MINI chimis is simply unreasonable..
I will never ask to go back there again, and I had chose Macayos Restaurant, from all the other options, in the first place. It was supposed to be a celebration, instead a waste of calories, money, and it ruined the evening.
I "USED TO" LOVE MACAYOS...I DO NOT KNOW WHAT HAS HAPPENED. The chips were the only good part of the visit for me.
I hope this was just a bad day and poor judgement with the restaurant's CHEF and waiter for serving sub-par food. But, anyone that can play games with customers food, trust, and ultimately their wallet, should NOT HAVE A JOB WORKING AROUND FOOD.
By the way, I love to write positive reviews whenever I receive nice treatment or good service. I wish I could have had something nice to write about at Macayos.
