Skip breakfast (or make it tiny) you’ll be eating soon enough and full by lunch. This is a wonderful experience to do with friends or a partner. The teachers were friendly and supportive and really took the time to explain how and why all parts of the cooking experience matter. Bring a baiting suit and sandals along for the trip as they have a pool and you’ll be on your feet outside cooking for several hours after the walk. The head chef will help you buy knives, durian fruit (fantastic, but you only need a single bulb) and any kitchen supplies you might want during your market walk, where you’ll get fantastic quality and the best prices. Finally, the boat ride back to the city at the end of the class is a great way to see the river, and overall this was a lovely way to experience local cuisine and learn the market. I recommend doing it early on in your trip as a way to begin the experience in a highly curated way.

My husband was reluctant to do a cooking class but he loved this tour. We did this tour on a bicycle and whilst it was stinking hot it was a great way to visit the markets and garden. Our guide Phong was amazing. He was funny, knowledgeable and so kind. His explanations of local fruits and veggies in the markets was exceptional. The four dishes we cooked were all delicious. From the bizarre, spinning, rocking coconut boats eventually taking us through the river ways to the restaurant, all the way to the five-course menu we cooked for ourselves, it was certainly memorable. We watched wide eyed as our clumsy efforts gradually morphed raw ingredients into dishes we couldn't believe we'd made ourselves, before subsequently eating for dinner. An amazing experience today with Tuan, her husband and their team here. We were collected from our hotel at 8am, and driven to a local market. The coconut boats were fun and we got to try fishing and crab fishing, as well as getting spun in the coconut boat. The session was 2pm-8:30pm, so a really long time but it was just so perfect, they really have thought of every last detail. Honestly couldn't recommend this anymore if I tried. Hanh explained everything very well and it was so much fun. Everything tasted sooo good. Nhi was incredible and really made the who thing. So after collection from our hotel we met Nhi at the market where we bought all of our ingredients fresh for the cooking. Trang, our friendly guide, did an amazing job as a Tour Guide as she explained every single thing that we were doing throughout the day. For those who don't eat meat / pork etc, this is the time you could inform the guide of your dietary requirements. Like us, Trang had substituted pork at no cost as we don't eat pork. She was a really great teacher; explained everything clearly, step by step for all 4 dishes! It commenced at 1pm with a warm welcome, the loan of a traditional hat and water, needed for the forth coming market tour. We learnt heaps about Vietnamese culture and especially vegan foods. We were introduced to trusted stall owners, and sampled products. Our guide and chief chef was so delightful and always happy to answer any and all questions. We cooked and enjoyed fresh rice paper rolls, including marinating and cooking Tempe; “chicken” salad and Bahn Xeo (pancake stuffed with wood ear mushrooms, seitan and vegan fish cake). All easy to make and so delicious. We were all provided take home containers for each course as we produced way more food than we could possibly eat in one sitting. By 6:30pm we rolled out the door, fully tummies, smiles on our faces and large bags of take away food to enjoy tomorrow. If you want an amazing experience in Hoi An, whether you are vegan or not, you must try this food tour and cooking class experience. I’ve done many cooking schools in many Asian countries and this hands down was the best.

She’s a vegan and rather than go somewhere which limits her choices to a couple of dishes, her birthday dinner had a full menu for her to order from. The food was amazing and the restaurant was busy so obviously very well known for its great food. We enjoyed all of the dishes we shared and had fresh juice for drinks. The taxi couldn’t go up the street the restaurant is in, so a 3-5 minute walk is required from taxi drop off point. Once you arrive at the gps location. Walk down the laneway and the chickpea eatery is on the left side at the end of the laneway. It looks like a lovely area with so many lanterns in the street. Staff were very pleasant and did the best they could with a full house of patrons. Wait time for meals was about 15 mins which was good. Very impressed with this casual little vegan restaurant.

We were spoiled for choice with vegan and vegetarian restaurants, but Chickpea Eatery was a clear standout. We went back multiple times in Hội An and Đà Nẵng during our 10 days there. The food is consistently fresh, flavourful, and clearly made with care. Everything we tried was delicious: pineapple fried rice, cao lau, the traditional food tray with spring rolls, BBQ tempeh skewers, vegan chicken rice (with morning glory), fresh spring rolls, juices, teas, and smoothies. We also loved the Magnum-style vegan ice cream at the Đà Nẵng location. Everything we ordered was also gluten free. Every meal ended with a little serving of passionfruit, which was such a thoughtful touch. The staff clearly care about what they do, and both locations have a really warm, welcoming feel (we didn’t get to visit mom’s kitchen). I think Vietnam has some of the best food in the world, and Chickpea Eatery was the one we loved most. The only thing I’m disappointed about was that I didn’t get to try their cooking class, but I will absolutely be back!

We opted to do the market visit as well and would definitely recommend. Very cool to get inside knowledge on what to purchase and how to find the best quality products. The class itself was great, I had more fun than expected plus we learnt a lot and made lots of yummy food. Ms Hanh is really knowledgeable on dietary requirements and able to cater to everyone. In our group alone we had 2 vegetarians, 1 vegan and 1 gluten free and she was able to adapt everything to suit each of us. If you’re in Hoi An this is a must do!

We had to boil alive in the room all day between 10am and 5pm (although one day we were told 6pm and sometimes it was turned off before 10am). The AC is turned on and off for you and you can't access the remote to adjust temp without asking. If it's too expensive then charge more or have a fan only option room so you get what is advertised. Most days the real feel temperature was 43C and it was unbearable to use the room at points. I was taking two cold showers a day minimum to try and cope. Most of the time we didn't have hot water (I could cope as it was very hot). However, the hostel had a great pool, sociable atmosphere and good common area. There was a free beer at times and also free breakfast which was a pleasant surprise. We missed the free breakfast on the first day as I don't think this was advertised on hostel world. They gave us a good recommendation for a tailor which was nice. Overall I would recommend this hostel but feel the AC policy should be reviewed.

There's a bar in the ground floor, a small pool and 24 hours working reception. The highlight of the place is that they have a clean and hygienic washroom on every floor. It kinda sucked since I had an exhausting day travelling around only to be in a hot box again. I wish they were more convenient on that front. The chef-proprietor personally picked us up from our hotel and whisked us away to his restaurant where we were provided bikes. After a relaxing and picturesque ride we reached the Tran Que Vegetable Village and the chef took us around the fields showing us all the herbs and how to identify them. Eating herbs straight off the farm was an absolutely delightful experience. After that we cycled back to a market where one can purchase fresh vegetables. Once cooled off we went around the market identifying different sellers and vegetables. Post this, it was time for the cooking to begin which meant another short ride to the main restaurant. It is an extremely nice setting in which to learn how to make 6 different dishes and some base sauces. One of the best aspects was that the chef not only made it seem easy but made you experience it as well. Which increases your confidence to replicate this for when you return back home. After cooking we sat down to eat and all of it was incredible. Highly recommend this experience.
