They could have sat us on time but decided to seat a couple on a four top table and make our party of three wait. They have self serve black coffee for $4.50 and free water but nowhere to sit or stand while you wait for your table. You pretty much have to wait outside in the rain with no cover or block the entrance by waiting on the ramp.

The staff is always so friendly even when under a bunch of pressure. Very accommodating to any extra needs and questions. I usually recommend Zells to anyone I know visiting Portland for the first time because it has that PDX feeling. I personally love everything on the menu, especially the pancakes. They used to have these lemon blueberry ricotta pancakes but they weren’t on the menu this time, however the apple ones were so yummy as well!! Zell's has definitely become one of my running group's top go-to breakfast places. The eggs were not medium. The bacon was next to raw. The hash brown casserole was beyond burnt. I couldn’t eat my food. I just paid my tab and let it go. Then my partner and I decided to give it another chance today and different meal but same experience. A few slices were completely soggy and inedible and then a few were completely burnt and inedible. I also want to caution that she is a vegetarian and both times found bacon in her potatoes. The food is so delicious, probably the best breakfast I have ever had. Vegan options are incredible, I had the Portland which is tofu, potatoes and veggies topped with vegan gravy. My hubby had a traditional breakfast and also thought it was the best ever. The housemade jam is a must, can't even describe what happened when I tried it! We were just passing through Portland but I am so jealous of the people that live here and get to go to this place routinely. The service was also excellent, the staff was incredibly kind. We sat outside with our dogs, very dog friendly. I've never had trailblazer coffee but it was really fabulous.

The new menu kept a couple of the good items, such as the Rising Sun. It added some good new items. I was very happy that they had no problem and customizing my order. The item I wanted, I forget the name, was a 4 egg omelette that had the hash browns on the inside and was covered with pork gravy. I asked to have the hash browns on the outside, and to hold the gravy, and was told no problem. The potatoes were great and I was happy they were on the outside so I could enjoy them with the aardvark hot sauce that is provided on each table.
