My husband knows how important and necessary furry therapy is for my overall wellbeing and this was our first long haul trip away from our brother cats we adopted last summer. He was able to plan this Field Trip at the Humane Society and it was exactly what we both needed; a full day with a little sweetie pie to shower with love. We arrived at the shelter, the lovely staff went over the dos and don’ts with the pups and we then hopped in line to be matched with our dog for the day. We told the sweet staff member at the desk the kind of dog we were looking for: peppy but not hyper, and a puppy who absolutely loves being snuggled and loved on, cue Hamma. Hamma is SO cute! He is a low to the ground mix of sorts (I think he’s got some wire haired terrier in there with his coat and his ear shape) who has an undeniably adorable overbite. Watching him eat his treats was so cute, he would drop pieces and immediately pick them up after finishing what’s in his mouth, and he dribbles water when he drinks but who cares when you’re as cute as he is! His sweet eyes are full of love and he is quick to give you all of his affection, this is when we decided to rename him from Hamma to Jon Hamm because he is a handsome and distinguished gentleman who will charm his way directly into your heart! This dog is a lady killer who knows how to work your heart strings, I melted 10,000 times that day with cuteness overload. We took him to the beach in Kapa’a where he was only interested in finding some nice soft grass to roll and play with his toys in. And also crawl up in your lap while looking at you with deep affection. He’s such a gentleman, he didn’t give kisses on the first date, but I’m positive once he finds his forever family, he’ll be handing them out left and right! We were fortunate to be able to find a lovely place right behind where we’re staying so we brought out the beach chairs and just parked with him where he very happily played with his toys, ate some treats, drank plenty of ice cold water and even played some ice cubes I brought him. After he wore himself out playing with his cute stuffed hedgehog, he came up in my lap and fell asleep belly up and very comfy. We unfortunately had to cut our visit a little short because a storm came out of nowhere off the ocean and we needed to pack up the chairs. Mr. Jon Hamm was completely unbothered by rain, he was so happy to be there sniffing grass and feeling the rain on his face. He passed out hard on the way back to the Humane Society, and my heart grew heavy, only because I fell head over heels in love with Jon Hamm, but because of our boys at home, we aren’t able to take him. I’m hoping by submitting this little “day in the life” story and just a few of the hundreds of photos we took will show how absolutely precious and incredible this dog is. You are walking inside a rain forest the hole time. It took us most of the day to finish the hike. Even though it's not too difficult, the mud definitely made the journey difficult for us. At the end of the trail I was covered with mud. I almost fell couple of times and my husband fell once. But we didn't give up and made it to the top. There were incredible birds and bird sounds on our trail. We often stopped and listened to them. But beware: birds and mosquitoes are working together because everytime we stopped i had additional a few bites- even with the bug spray. So definitely apply bug spray before and during the hike. Also some places were a little too intense, we literally did some bouldering in some places.

Loved the strawberry guava berries (the pink berries) you can eat along the trail, the round protruding roots everywhere, the Causarina trees with their drooping branchlets, the free-range wild chickens, the reddish dirt, the large monarch ferns showing their seed patterns, the expansive views of the valley with the water in the background. All around 5 star hike and completely worth it. We turned around at the shelter -- 3 miles was enough. Recommend that you hike early as it gets muggy/warm later in the day. If you have kids or aren't the most agile/fit, take the West trail. BTW, Google Maps said this trail didn't open until 7am, but there was nothing restricting entry before then, nor did I see any signs indicating that opening time. I'd say, start at 6:30 am.

We ran across another visitor that gave us a few more explanations about other items which was rather interesting as well that he learned going through the museum. Where you go in or exit from there's a nice little gift shop with random miscellaneous souvenirs and history books and whatnot. The museum is pretty small and could be explored in 1-2 hours. The initial building has lots of history ranging from initial discovery and inhabitation to colonial times.
