This review comes after two visits to the Smallman Street Deli. The orders were online for takeout. I had the "You Can't Eat It" Sandwich and a side of Potato Latkes. On both occasions, the meat on the sandwich was very dry. The latkes were good on one visit, and like cardboard on the other. The order was supposed to include chips and a drink. They were missing on both orders. After not getting them the first time, I checked the bag before leaving and had to ask for them. They seem to be most known for their substantially large sandwiches like the rueben as well as latkes, matzah ball soup, and other items. I decided to try their MnM cookies and the simple grilled cheese. You can't really go wrong with a grilled cheese; it's pretty simple. But, they do make it well here. The portion is decent and the price is also reasonable. Compared to some of their other sandwiches, it is smaller but also quite a bit cheaper (other sandwiches are generally somewhat expensive but have large portions). They use classic American cheese, which had a slight plastic taste but it was still good. Bread was still somewhat crispy and buttery. Added bonus is that they serve the sandwich with a pickle spear. Good pickle portion and very flavorful. They offer numerous baked goods and desserts as well. They gave me two cookies. I'm not sure if that's the standard portion or if they were just feeling generous. Either way they were very tasty. Plenty of MnMs and nice crispy edges. All in all, would recommend if you want to stop by for lunch. Could be a bit expensive if you order a large sandwich. But, great location and a fair amount of lunch options.

It has been for the last 15 years. That is why it is so disappointing to post this bad review. We went a little bit early knowing it would be a busy Saturday. We waited for 30 minuets for a table, which was fine. When we finally got our table, we put our order in. The waitress kept coming to our table and telling us "Your food will be right out soon". This took place 5 different times. Meanwhile, people the came in AFTER us where getting their food with minimal wait times. A whole hour past and we still had no food. We told the waitress that we were going to have to leave soon if we didn't get our order because we would be late for the game. She asked us if we wanted it to go, and we said we couldn't do that because we were going straight to the arena. She then informed us that they had to cut more meat for one of our sandwiches, meaning they had not even started our order yet. This was after an whole hour past after we placed the order. So we had to leave without eating. We expressed our displeasure with the manager that was there, and she gave us a major attitude, and sited that it was because they where really busy. We have frequented this establishment for 15 years. It was not nearly as busy this visit as it has been in the past, and we NEVER waited more then 30 mins for our order. Between this experience, and that fact that they have cut their menu down by over 40 items, its obvious that this place is not what it has been in the past. It's so disappointing. The beers are great, the location is cozy and the food was amazing! Fast foward to 2025. Last Sunday was the final chance I gave this location after 3 previous visits that underwhelmed me. Previously, the service was lackluster, the food tasted stale and the place just felt dirty. This most recent visit disappointed me yet again with a yeasty smell you get from a brewery, yet they aren't brewing beers at this location. What does that mean? The hostess looked drained and meh and told us it would be 15min for a table yet no one else was waiting. One of the two dining rooms was blocked off completely, and there was room in the bar area. A college group of 5 guys came in after us and were told up to 45min. We got seated shortly after and the dining room booths were all beat to hell. Completely worn out and cracked beyond repair. We noticed the menu was cut was down in size recently and the prices went up. I ordered an imperial head hunter as it was their special of the month for $5 and the wife ordered a crumble berry. A few moments later, our server comes back and asks us what drinks we ordered again. A few more moments later our drinks arrive, mine being in a pint glass, and as she was in a hurry to run off, I asked her, "is this the imperial?" Her response was, "yeah" and then took off. The imperial is served in a 12oz glass. I took one sip and immediately knew, it was the regular head hunter. Whatever. My wife took a sip of her Crumble Berry and she says, there's something off about it. It's her favorite Fat Head's beer so she knows what it should taste like. The server came back to take our order and had trouble hearing us because "it was loud" in there. It was not. Then after I order, I was told that they were out of pastrami. Ok, cool! Changed my order. At this point, people are slowly exiting and the 5 college kids never came back. Missed revenue there! Moving on...We get our food, but no napkins nor utensils. Time goes by and finally we ask our server. She asks if we want another beer (still half left) which we decline and she says she'll be back to fill our waters. She did not. We finish up our meals and we wait and wait and wait. Our server comes back and asks if we'd like anything else or ready for the check. Check please. Sure enough, our bill had my beer listed as a $7.50 head hunter, not a $5 imperial head hunter. It's one thing to mishear or mistakenly pour, but to blatantly lie to me and then bill me what you want is disrespectful. To Management: Please fix/repair your seating areas, clean your beer lines and taps, encourage your staff to be a little more enthusiastic and caring towards the customers and make your food be as large as the Cleveland area locations and taste just as good. The local crowd of first-name-basis regulars was a good sign. Staff is efficient and attentive. Portions are huge and a good value. Sons had buger and fish sandwiches, we hade the meatballs and chicken parm dinners. Wedding soup was perfect, light and hearty all at once. Good cook on all food. The home fries were crispy and soft- do recommend! French toast was perfect: soft, buttery, and not overly sweet. The waiter affirmed that she saw blueberry pancakes being cooked on the same pan. I believe her, and she did offer to bring a fresh one, but it had given me the ick and I had lost my appetite. Thankfully it was the last one and I was able to enjoy most of my breakfast. Isolated incident, which is why I gave it a 4 stars but everything else was wonderful. I do recommend this place and look forward to coming back for their sandwiches.

The other burger was just that: a burger. I ordered Angry Orchard on tap: I have NEVER been disappointed with it on tap, but some how, some way they managed to mess that up too. The whole experience was lackluster and severely overpriced. The waitress was MIA most of tbe time, hence why someone else brought over our food. The only thing the place really has going for it was that it had a variety of big screen TVs that had anything from soccer, to lacrosse, to football. Unless it's the only place to eat at, skip this altogether, unless you have a substandard palette and an obsession with overpriced food. I didn't even take pictures. When I got home, I found that my burger patty was extremely oversized and very salty. I had to slice it in half just to try to eat it, it was pink inside and unfortunately undercooked. To make matters worse, I discovered a hair on my tomato. The Cajun fries were also very cold, old, and inedible. It looked like I was given the bottom of the barrel since most pieces were very small. If you plan on dining here though, you have to be prepared to wait outside of the building in a line that forms prior to 5PM when they open! The inside has plenty of seating and they have outdoor seating as well. I also like this location because it's close to Oakland but not where all the Pitt students are. So why the three star review then? The price you are paying compared to the size of the sandwich you get is out of balance. I ordered the number one expecting a triple decker to be decently sized but it just wasn't. It was in line with a single sized sandwich at primanti brothers which I only mention because everyone in Pittsburgh has had one of their sandwiches so you will understand the size I'm referring to. I would say the New Yorker primanti brothers offers is extremely close to what the number 1 here is like but it's cheaper and you get a much bigger sandwich so while the sandwich was good they run small. Now I understand this is a small deli and certainly would not have the bulk buying power of primanti brothers so I understand the price difference but if it were me I wouldn't call it a triple decker even though it has three slices of bread. Triple decker makes it sound like it will be a big sandwich when it's not. Now if you opt instead for one of their gravy options such as the beef or meatloaf then you are getting a pretty good deal. I ordered that for take out to have for dinner and that definitely filled me up because of the heavy starch from the fries, the thick gravy, the bread and a nice chunk of beef. I will also say the mish mash soup I got was really loaded up, definitely more content then broth so again that is a pretty decent offering too. So you got a mix of the good and the not so great which leaves this at a balanced 3 star for me. Would I go back? Yes and I will but knowing what I know now I'll stick to the options that we're good value for money and not order what I thought wasn't so good. It's definitely worth a stop if you are in the area and want a sandwich that, while small, is a good all around sandwich. If you get one of the soups, and you definitely should, you won't be disappointed. The roast beef and gravy would also be a dish you will enjoy. I certainly did.

Honestly, it turned my entire day around. Look - I was raised in Lawrence County, PA so my knowledge/standards of what is considered "good" Vietnamese food can be taken with a grain of salt. I was in there at a weird time, around 3p, so I'm pretty sure I was the only customer at the time. That said, service was very quick and polite. 5 stars. Atmosphere was pleasant too. I really enjoyed the Banh Mi. The sandwich roll (bread) was the best I've ever had for a Banh Mi. Chicken/Cilantro/veggie/carrot mix was great too and didn't overwhelm me in terms of spiciness, though I have a high tolerance. The sweetness of the strawberry lemonade was a perfect compliment. This was probably the 5th Banh Mi I've ever had in my life and my favorite so far. Shrimp rolls were fresh-tasting and a good appetizer. I paid $26 bucks for all three items. Thought it was fair in this day and age. I'd pay $26 bucks again for all three items because they really hit the spot. I'm fairly certain I can find a cheaper one somewhere in the city, but for Lawrenceville it was about what I expected. If I lived on this side of town, I would definitely come back in the morning to try that coffee.

They also known for their vegan options, but I wasn’t feeling particularly vegan, so I just got the regular stuff. I got the cappuccino, which was how cappuccino should be and very well-made. I also got the BLT as I was pretty hungry, and they apparently also have a vegan bacon which I’m very curious as to how it tastes, but I did not want to try it this particular morning. The BLT was extremely delicious. it was very simply made with fresh tomatoes, good lettuce, and most importantly, very good bread. We were just two, but we got a steak sandwich and one of their entree salads. Both came with what seemed like a whole sirloin and they were both cooked to perfection. The food photographs beautifully. Just genuinely confused on why there are so many rave reviews on the food. Not bad at all, but certainly not worth the dinner menu prices they are charging. Between myself and my partner we tried their house special cut as well as their most recommended appetizers, and the only dish we thought lived up to the reputation was the grilled vegetables. We all ordered our food and it came out hot and fresh. We were only disappointed by 2 of the items we ordered. The Hall of fame burger looked like a frozen patty that was over cooked. So it was very dry and lacked the flavor expected from the description. The burger sliders were very tasty and were juicy as expected. I ordered ranch on the side and it had a watery appearance but tasted good. The presentation of the Asian firecracker shrimp was just beautiful. They said they tasted delicious. Our friends told us you could see through the mirror in the bathroom out to the bar. Sure enough I went and checked and you could. That was pretty neat. I'm easily amused. We also were disappointed because in preparation for our visit the other guests and I had went on the website to download the free appetizer offer for visiting the restaurant, but it would not download and we called the restaurant about it before coming to Pittsburgh and the host acted like they didn’t know what we were referring to as well as the waiter at the restaurant. The waiter offered a dessert on the house to compensate for the terrible experience, but then changed his mind after another waiter finally brought out three deviled eggs to our table after we were finished eating and an hour and thirty minute wait!! Thank goodness we paid for two hours of parking. Mr. Bettis we expected better especially since your restaurant was supposed to be one of the top choices and we are your number one Steelers fans!!
