Shree Madanantheshwara Siddi Vinayaka Temple, is a site of immense spiritual power and architectural beauty, nestled on the banks of the Madhuvahini (Mogral) river near Kasaragod. While the principal deity is Lord Shiva (Madanantheshwara), the temple is universally famous for its spontaneously formed and growing idol of Lord Ganesha (Siddhi Vinayaka).
Deities and Spiritual Significance
The temple features a unique dual-deity system, making it revered by both Shaivites and Ganapatyas:
Lord Shiva (Madanantheshwara): The presiding deity is Lord Shiva. The original self-manifested Shiva Linga (Udbhava Murthy) was discovered at this site by a woman named Madaru, after whom the village and temple are said to be named.
Lord Ganapathi (Siddhi Vinayaka): The Ganesha idol, installed facing south in the main sanctum, is the primary draw for most devotees. Legend says that a small Brahmin boy drew the figure of Ganesha on the wall, and the figure miraculously began to grow bigger and wider, earning the deity the affectionate name "Bodda Ganesha" (The large/fat Ganesha).
Architecture and Unique Features
The temple's structure is a magnificent blend of Kerala and Dravidian architectural styles, reflecting the cultural confluence of the region.
Gajaprishta Style: The temple features a three-tiered dome (sreekovil) that resembles the back of a crouching elephant (Gajaprishta), capped with copper plating.
Wood Carvings: The Namaskara Mandapam (pavilion) is famous for its intricate wooden carvings and murals, illustrating detailed scenes from the Ramayana.
Historical Mark: A visible cut mark on one of the outer walls near the temple well is attributed to the invasion attempt by Tipu Sultan. Legend holds that Tipu intended to destroy the temple but was moved by its sanctity after drinking water from the well, leaving only a symbolic mark with his sword.
Prominent Rituals and Offerings
The most famous and unique offering at this temple is the Moodappa Seva, a rare ceremony where the idol of Lord Ganesha is completely covered in a mountain of Appam. Post puja, you can get this seet prasad as well.
Location, Timings, and Accessibility
The temple is situated approximately 7 to 8 km from Kasaragod town in Kerala, along the scenic banks of the Madhuvahini River. The temple usually remains closed from 1:00 PM to 5:30 PM daily.
