I love the big descent down Pork Hill to Tavistock, and the one down to Exeter - and of course they are for great ascents too, nice and steady. Come to see the cute Dartmoor Ponies too - they’re very short and quite timid, like Shetlands without the attitude problems. but treat them with care, they still need to feel wild, not domesticated.

Stunning gardens in June; wildflowers and naturalistic planting, beautiful trees, trails, and open spaces. The walled garden was very pretty and it wasn't too busy when we went. However this time was incredibly disappointing. The amazing, friendly, knowledgable staff. The site is so beautifully maintained and cared for and resides in such a gorgeous location. The activities such as chocolate making and victorian school were so well done and the train ride through a mine was something I didn’t think I’d ever do. They squeezed us in early for a quick tour of the site which was really going the extra mile as they had a school trip in shortly after opening. I couldn’t recommend this place more if you have an interest in history, mines, engineering or anything Victorian. The site is also accessible for people whom may find walking difficult and they have a buggy to drive you up to the mine train as the walk up is quite steep. To sum it up, this is a must see if you’re in Devon!

Highly recommended! We were welcomed by warm and friendly staff who gave us a quick rundown of what was on offer. We then proceeded upstairs and were amazed at how many historical items, artifacts, and items of interest had been packed into the space. There was a room on Tavistock in wartime and how it had welcomed refugees. The displays were wonderful and intimate. You got a real glimpse of how life was during that time. The next two rooms focused on the history of Tavistock, the establishment of the Abbey, the boom brought on by mining and lots more. There was a fascinating display on the railroads and the two railway stations that Tavistock used to have. As a former History teacher I was impressed! I will definitely need to make another visit. Highly recommend a visit.

The two ladies sitting at the front desk were welcoming, even though it was not that long before closing time. The small but lovely display of garments & info on local women writers was engaging, but there was rather a lot of accompanying text to absorb. I was fascinated by the elaborate lectern in the next room, with just enough succinct information to bring its place in local history to life. This amount of explanation suited us much better! No time for the next room, but we would like to return to see the range of other artefacts on display to add to our understanding of Tavistock's history. It would be good to see some interactive activities to engage younger generations. Not sure if there is a souvenir/ gift area or shop - we may have missed it during such a speedy visit & would have had a look. We'll be back!

Brilliant place. There is so much to do here. They also have tree surfing, which looked amazing. I tried to book online but had trouble. So I emailed and they replied swiftly and it was all sorted out. Recommend wearing wellies or boots as it was wet and muddy obviously! Didn't put anyone off as it was really busy. There's a small cafe. We called in on the way out. Very small menu, but decent cuppa. The best apple cake I have ever tasted. All 4 of us had something different and not one complaint. It was lovely. I have to give a massive shout out to the young girl who was serving in the cafe. It got busy very quickly and she was amazing. Very calm and polite. We found Pennywell farm when searching for somewhere to visit en route to our holiday park. Even on a wet Monday we still had a fantastic time. There’s plenty of animals to feed in the dry. Feed was available to purchase at the entrance/shop. The goats will definitely make you giggle. From the incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable staff giving talks, to holding a piglet. Both children aged 2yrs old were fully engaged and made to feel welcomed by staff. There’s also plenty of hand washing stations located around the site. The views from the top of the viewing tower give you a 360 panorama of picturesque Scenery which all compliment its truly beautiful location. We loved it so much we returned on the Friday, on our way home from our holiday. If you have the opportunity to pay Pennywell farm a visit it’s well worth it! Thank you to the team at Pennywell farm for building something truly beautiful for many generations to enjoy and making us feel so welcomed!

Pumpkin Day was fantastic, the weather was cold but the rain held off. Cuddles with mice, rabbits, guinea pigs and pigs indoors was extremely well organised and overseen by friendly, helpful staff with complete emphasis on the animals welfare. Same for the pig racing and we were very happy and impressed. Food available was pretty good, but difficult to find something for my 9yr old grandson,as he has very severe allergies to milk, cheese, gluten and even soy and there really wasn't anything he could have. cross contamination couldn't be ruled out. I understand that they can't cater for these problems,but might i suggest that at least a few gluten free with vegan cheese pizzas could be kept in the freezer for people with these sorts of problems?. Then they'd always be able to offer something.It's hard when he has to always take his own food and can't join in with everyone else. That said, they were as helpful as they could be and did have fruit juices he could have. We thoroughly enjoyed our day out together seeing the animals and playing in the play areas, taking photos and making memories. Came away with a few unusual pumpkins and plenty of smiles. The only negative thing was the bouncy castles, feel you need someone supervising them during busy periods, lots of older children that shouldn’t be in there bing boisterous and dangerous really I pulled my little one off in the end and I could just see someone getting really hurt. This place has a whole heap of activities dotted throughout the day, a new one every 30 minutes! It has a huge variety of animals and for a small additional fee you can feed the animals. I wish I had photographed our mains which were the chicken curry (best pub curry I’ve ever had) and the Moroccan lamb belly which was also insanely good. We had the beef brisket croquettes to start which were served with dill pickles and a jalapeño mayo (pictured). Having eaten at many pubs in the area, it’s pretty unmatched. One thing I would say I would love the pub to have a more traditional look with the decor. There’s nothing better than a pub with exceptional food which feels authentically old and traditional. Chose this place based on reviews of the food. On arrival there was dedicated parking for guests, which was a good start. We were shown to our room promptly. The room was very spacious and well appointed. The free decanter of sherry was a nice touch. However, the room wasn't very warm. I pointed this out to the member of staff who then sorted this out. However, by late afternoon the heating had gone off. It was a dull, rainy October day so we weren't exactly comfortable. We dined in the restaurant on both nights and the food was exceptional, high end restaurant quality. However, the same can't be said for breakfast. My wife and I do these trips fairly regularly and I have never been served a breakfast with so much salt. I did point this out and was offered a replacement but who wants to wait around for breakfast! Also, very unusual these days that no set veggie option on the breakfast menu. No heating came on in the morning but came on after I complained only to go off again late afternoon, not great. The WiFi was slow and we kept losing signal making it difficult to stream films. On a positive note, apart from the temperature issue the hotel is vey well appointed and comfortably with a welcoming log fire, real ales a available and friendly and efficient staff.

Best to become a member as if your planning on visiting more than 2 or 3 sites in a year, it works out way cheaper (and you get free parking in loads of places) .. I’ve done a fair few distillery tours and this was by far the worst one I’ve ever been too. It’s relatively informative but the tour guide we had was rough. She basically yelled at us the entire time like she was leading an outdoor river cruise with no microphone. There were “jokes” in the script and it felt almost like she was trained to do a high energy tour, but has been imprisoned here for decades and it has drained all life and energy out of her. So now, she regurgitates the words but emotionless. Like an animatronic animal from an 80s theme park. The tour finished in about 40 minutes. The bar is fit out beautifully and the bartender was lovely. The gift shop was underwhelming and was manned by two ladies in the middle of a d&m and were all consumed. We spent the weekend at Riverdart Country Park for Oktoberfest and honestly had the best time! The woodland play areas are a real highlight – perfectly maintained, full of adventure, and such a beautiful setting to sit back and watch your children play. Everything about the park feels cared for and thoughtfully managed. We’d definitely recommend bringing wetsuits if you plan to get stuck into the Jolly Pirate ship or the jump pools.. There are fantastic adventure play areas and plenty of space to run around and trees to climb. There is lots to do for the children. Multiple outdoor play areas located over the park, for both toddlers and big kids who are always on the go. There a big indoor soft play area that is 5 stores high! My daughter loved it. There are rides located around the park. If your looking for the latest & super fast rides, you need to got to Alton towers or somewhere like that. The farm area was cool, special as you could get close n feed some of them. Bird of prey section was interesting and amazing on how close you could get. Food here is limited and expensive but nice to eat and cooked, fresh to order. Overall, my family enjoyed going there and we did camp there awell. If you got a young family, give this place a try.

Both loved the day out and enjoyed the mix of rides and being able to see and feed the animals. We didn't have to wait long (and sometimes not at all) for the rides which were great fun. The favs of the day being the water coasters which were exciting, even getting wet didn't dampen the enthusiasm for more goes on all three coasters and were great for getting dad wet! Our 12 year old loved the twisty turny one! Mum loved feeding the goats and seeing all the animals. The sugar gliders were really cute as was the otter playing with his rock! As it was Halloween week, we loved the extra touches throughout the park and the kids took the opportunity to try out their Halloween costumes, our dino-clad son mistaken for a park employee reveled in waving at the younger children and having his photo taken! Whilst our daughter did her best not to scare the little ones :-) All the staff we interacted with were polite and the ride attendants doing a great job with big smiles even in the cold and drizzley weather. A fantastic day out which we'd recommend - definitely a full day out with something for all the family. Hopefully will be back in slightly warmer weather.

With the Halloween theme the kids both dressed up and even drew attention from other kids to have photos taken which was entertaining for us too. Everything was clean, well-organised, and the staff were all so friendly and helpful. There’s loads to do, both indoors and outdoors, so it’s perfect for all weathers. All in all, it was a fantastic family day out – the kids haven’t stopped talking about it since! We’ll definitely be back for another visit soon

Car parking is free and it's a short downhill walk to the Abbey. There is disability parking closer to the entrance and toilets at the entrance too. I had no idea Sir Francis Drake had owned this place so it was a really interesting place to see. For those interested in art, there is a genuine self portrait of Rembrandt which will sadly be exhibited elsewhere for a while, luckily we saw this on its last day at Buckland. The story of the Rembrandt is interesting as it was sold to the National Trust from a local family wanting to pay off taxes and the family chose the from their own collection their most dislikes pictures, the Rembrandt being one of them. The family had been completely unaware of the significance of this picture as apparently the husband of the family had bought it without acknowledging it's value to his wife. Many years later the National Trust decided to have the picture checked for authenticity, when clarification eventually arrived it became apparent that this was a genuine self portrait from Rembrandt himself. As I said the staff at this location are very knowledgeable. There are fabulous grounds to walk around and a walled garden which is full of great produce. As with all National Trust locations there is a cafe serving all the regular food and drinks and the staff throughout the site are very knowledgeable and polite. Always a worthwhile visit 👍🏻
