When I go to Hornsea I walk a good long way out along the beach before heading back via the Leisure Centre. Rowing boats are available to hire for around £5 per head per hour which is highly recommended, motor boat trips are also available. We opted for one of the many rowing boats, out on the water the scale of the lake is felt in each pull of the oars, the friendly boat hire crew advised us to wrap up warm and reserve time and energy coming back to the boat house as a cold easterly blew in from the North Sea which resists progress, thankfully this was still easy going and an excellent way to connect to the landscape and people of the past, sailing the boat like the regions ancient tribal people the Parisi rekindling ghosts of our wild spirits as many bird species fly and float along with us through air and water. After the boat ride, public paths are ready to explore around the lake or take it easy & rest on one of the many unique and creative seats and benches placed conveniently around the boating area taking in the view of lake and big skies above. Great place to visit as an alternative to the beach, ideal for a picnic and relaxing in fresh air or indoors a visit to the cafe at the boat house. The lake ideal for a dry summer day but enjoyable views all year round.

In fact it has not one but two open water swim clubs. For interspecies families one aspect of the beach is available to dogs all year round - this area is clearly marked. Food wise there are really fab fish and chips to be had, award winning infact. Indeed you can get a Yorkshire fishcakes here. For dessert you can get a Mr Moos ice cream. There are some great public toilets here (soap, water and ha dryer combos) with clean toilets. There is also a fab all you could want for the beach shop right on sea front. Not at all tacky seaside place. Well worth a visit. Only downside is there is no train station.

It's a nice little place and good to pass a little time. There's coat hooks available where you can leave all your things, coats, shopping etc. but it is only a small area. This was very helpful as we had our big coats, hats, scarves on due to it being freezing out and the temperature in Bugtopia is the opposite. We got there and were able to go straight in and through. There were only a couple other families in, so we could take our time looking for the animals, reading the signs and answering our kids questions without feeling rushed or in the way. We sat in one of the talks before we left and it was very informative and interesting. My then 4 year old was fascinated by all the facts. I think we spent about 50 minutes here and probably 10-15 was spent in the gift shop and getting coats on/off and washing hands.

A nice little town with parking on the streets for free if you are willing to walk a bit, or pay in the closest carparks. A couple of small cafés by the beach for fish and chips. The tide does come in very quickly, it is worth timing the visit for lower tide. The waves were quite high along the beach, so good for a little bit of body-boarding. Holiday home prices are competitive but also take into account any additional costs that have not been disclosed at the time. Find out before purchasing then make sure you get receipts and don't pay cash or bank transfer. You need some kind of purchase protection as you would on a credit card. Be aware that the contract that you receive at purchase is not a rolling one, it is just for the current year and this can and will change as the site owner desires. The Maples Experience. It is in a great location and quiet a scenic site with a few owners almost living there as it is a 12 month season. The site is fairly small with around 100 plots. Holiday home owners on site are generally friendly. The site is next to a mid sized industrial unit manufacturing steel fabrications so it can be quite noisy mid week. There is an ornamental pond on the top site and a fishing pond on the other. It is about a mile away from Hornsea and about mile away from the sea over the road via Hornsea Leisure park and boat club. Current Site fees £3900 for lodges and £3600 for vans. This is up for review ready for 2026 season. In Summary The site has great potential which is somewhat spoilt by the owner's controlling behaviour. What should be a pleasurable experience isn't. His business plan is to control and aggitate which encourages owners to give up and sell cheap therefore giving a constant supply of good value second hand stock or vacant plots which can be filled with an ex stock, cheaply sourced older unused models. It is a real shame as the site could be so much better if only residents were treated with a little respect rather than a cash cow. A fair number of residents have tired of his behaviour and have moved on. Those who remain are brasing themselves for a hike in site fees with a charge for water. If you're considering purchasing be careful and know what youre letting yourself in for before parting with any cash, even a deposit. The poodles are kept out of the guest house and are under control at all times . All in all we had such a good time we stayed for a 3rd night, i would recommend staying here nothing is to much trouble. we will definately go back ans soon i hope xx

I walked past it for 3 years when I lived in Hornsea and thought it was lovely. My husband is from Hornsea and never knew it was there. I love the history behind it and love how it's still around for people to enjoy today. Most recently it was used as an air raid look out point and siren during WWII. It must have been used frequently as Hull was the second most heavily bombed city in England. Now it sits in a housing estate off the main road that goes through Hornsea - Newbegin. I wasn't aware of it being opened when I lived there but it's nice to see the photos on here of what it looks like on the inside.
