We often grab a sub from one of the local vendors and enjoy the atmosphere. I really feel the geese are overwhelming and should be removed, it is very difficult to walk and not step in geese droppings, totally disgusting, people we have spoke with feel the same about the geese and the mess they create. Some geese are very food aggressive as well, it really is a shame. The pavilions are dirty and unkempt, cigarette butts / trash cans overfull / picnic tables just dirty / grime and of course the geese gifts are present. I see others fishing not sure what they catch, they appear to be having a good time. Many out walking around the pond not sure the distance around. The picture is the best spot we could find that day free of geese gifts, although you can see some trash present under the table other spots much worse. So far it has not become a hangout for the homeless society. I am really not sure what could be done about the geese, the lack of maintenance and geese are the reason I gave it a 3 star instead of a higher rating. Edit: Another meatball sub day so I took more pictures and asked some folks about the fishing. Carp Bass Sunnys Catfish seem to be what most are catching.

I'm from NYC originally, so my parents would take us camping up there in the summers sometimes. The only reason I didn't choose to apply to Elmira is that it wasn't "alternative" enough for me. It's a pretty "preppy" kind of college (or at least it was back when I was considering applying in the early 90's) and the student body seemed pretty: "penny loafer & button down" -- I had an intuition that I'd have had a tough time making friends and connections there. Plus, I wanted more control over my education and I wanted to design my own course of study. Elmira would only have let me do that to a certain extent (I needed a college with more academic freedom) and I needed FULL control over my academics in an interdisciplinary college environment. I was also dead-set on going to college in New England (but some upstate NY colleges got my consideration) so that's where I went in the end; to Amherst, Massachusetts. Elmira is nice though, but it just wasn't the place for me.

The professors were friendly, intelligent, encouraged conversations & office hours visits. The grounds & architecture were top tier, the food was okay, but the best cuisine was at the dine-in restaurant that served Pizza-burgers. Mackenzie's was nice also & the exquisite 1855 Room. The campus has a grocery store for the times Walmart was too far. The dorms were immaculate, and the buildings & grounds team made sure the surroundings were pristine. Pool halls, billiards, rec rooms, movie nights, karaoke, etc. all helped with on-campus entertainment. The surrounding neighborhoods were beautifully manicured, the mountains were gorgeous during the Fall & Winter periods, the Arnot Mall was the spot to hang out off campus. Lots of restaurants nearby campus: Papa John's, Pizza Hut, Pudgie's, McDonald's, Domino's & of course Wegman's & Weiss stores. It's a great place to live & go to college; very family-oriented. Wish I could go back to these times. Definitely visit Elmira & the Finger Lakes region when you're in Upstate, New York.

Cleveland makes the history of John Jones easier to follow because of his storytelling. I was the only one there which I’m not sure how often he has to give single tours, but he did great not making it awkward. You can tell he cares about the museum. He said they have plans of an extension off the back; that with a new walk way to the new statue will make the museum stand out ! I am ashamed to admit I didn’t know most of the history prior to my visit nor did I wish Cleveland a happy Juneteenth. Nor did I realize I visited the museum 2 days before the Juneteenth holiday. This University campus is gorgeous and full of beautiful old buildings. This was not the original home for the study but has become its final resting place. Pleasantly surprised with the neat interior, there are many vintage photos of Elmira inside, and it is neat and clean. Seemed to be plenty of parking even during the lunch rush. While the burger patties were not the absolute best I have ever had, overall the burger was very tasty, and well sized for the value. The fries were crispy and hot and I felt that the portion size was excellent. My wife ordered a hotdog, and seemed pleased with it, and she thoroughly enjoyed the order of French fries with gravy. I snuck a few of them and liked the flavor of the gravy. Very tasty indeed. Staff was amenable and friendly, and delivered food to tables. Overall an excellent experience and will definitely go again.

The nature center closes at 4 pm, but you can use the trails until sundown. We rented cabins in pairs for a few days during an unplanned cold and rainy front. This campground is beautiful and quiet, very easy to feel close to nature. It’s beautiful at night to stargaze here and it’s a great place to be with friends and connect with nature. Be aware the cabins are close to the edge of a steep drop, with about ~10 feet of space between the porch and edge. I only wish the cabins were slightly farther away!! PROS: secluded, attentive rangers (we were given a phone number and any concern was addressed quickly, like our trash cans being full or a question), great surroundings, not too far from town for supplies besides the normal camping supplies. The cabins each have a stovetop, refrigerator, storage, 4 twin beds available, and electric. The cabins also have a bathroom on the structure, but entered from the outside. The cabins could use a bit more sealing of cracks, but i did notice there was effort to update that! I think if these are things you adequately plan for, you would be okay! We knew these things were possible and even with the very chilly weather experienced a fair amount of bugs. It is definitely worth a visit to see the views here of the area. If you love camping and connecting closely with nature but still having electricity, a toilet, and a stove, you would love it here.
