Theodore Roosevelt NP was my very first experience with a national park. We visited in mid-October, which proved to be a pretty “quiet” time to visit. On drive into the park, we were lucky enough to see a large herd of bison on one side of the road and an entire band of 15 or so wild horses on the other, with prairie dogs scattered throughout.
We chose to camp at the Cottonwood campsite. The night we set up our camp, a herd of bison walked through before heading down the valley towards the river. If you want to experience wildlife up close (SAFELY), this is an excellent spot.
Unfortunately we visited during the government shutdown, meaning there were no rangers present in the park. Despite this, the park was still very clean and well-maintained. The scenic drive loop was closed for renovations to the road, but most of it was still accessible.
The campsite featured drive-in spots (for RVs, but cars can also park here) as well as back-in spots. The back-in spots have better views of the natural landscape, in my opinion. We had no issues showing up without any reservations and finding a site.

Only had a few hours before dark here and it was worth it. So quiet. The quiet here is what made it worth it to me. The diverse landscape was something we don’t have back east so it was really nice to see.
I was able to see many Bison, couple coyotes, more prairie dogs than I have ever seen in one location, some doe mule deer. Right at dark I was hearing elk bugle.
Make the short hike up Buck hill as the view was really worth it.
There was almost nobody here.
Would I plan an entire vacation to come here, and only go to the park, no.
Adding horse back trail riding in the area would really make it worth it to come here.
Would I stop again if driving through YES.
Super happy I was able to see the northern light just outside of town on the drive.

If you’re traveling through western North Dakota, the Painted Canyon Welcome Center is hands-down one of the best stops you can make. It’s not just a rest area—it’s a full experience.
Right when you pull in, the views of the Painted Canyon hit you. The layers of red, orange, and gray running through the Badlands look like something out of a postcard. You can walk right up to the overlook and see miles of rugged country that looks untouched and wild.

Well... don't let the "one mile" trail fool you, you go down and have to come back up, which is, 250ish feet!!! So I don't get out much so it really kicked my butt. But I saw school age kids doing it and retired aged people. I don't didn't see the older people come back up, just go down haha. Aside from all of that, absolutely beautiful, quiet, and peaceful. You think you went to a place on a different planet. It was definitely worth it. If you plan on doing multiple hikes, you might want to make this one a "my only hike today" hike if you know what I'm trying to say.

My favorite hike i have ever been on. I felt like I was in a story book. I have lupus and im not very active so this was the perfect little hike for me. A true gem!!! Even the ride to the location was very serenity and entertaining, building up to the grand finale of the speechless views of the this hike. On my trail app, this hike is ranked number one and I couldn't agree more. Very peaceful, quiet, and beautiful. Stillness. Serene. Tranquil. It was crazy. Amazing. Like I was in a dream. Its a must go. If you come to north dakota and don't come here, you're doing it wrong! Don't be a loser and put this hike on the top of your list.

That’s something I wish I didn’t have to see—some kids inscribing their names into the hills. Maybe it feels thrilling to them in the moment, but it takes away from the experience for everyone else. Wind Canyon Trail is a perfect example of how a short hike can offer an incredible reward. Located in the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, it’s an easy, brief loop that leads to one of the most stunning overlooks in the entire park. Nice little visitor center, not too busy for a July 4. Had a tour of their interpretive center, like 15-20 mins about Teddy Roosevelt and his time as a rancher. The Rangers working this Unit were very nice and informative. There is a very small selection of gift shop items here. But we found what we needed. The trail descends rather steeply with log steps and lots of side trails off the main mini-loop. The views just get better as you go down, though. Just make sure to watch out for Bison droppings! This was so awe-inspiring. The beauty of the canyon and all of the colors was magical. It seems to appear out of nowhere in a sea of nothingness. Then you can't believe your eyes! We were just there 2 weeks ago and saw a bunch of wildlife that is truly wild! A heard of wild bison came less than 100 feet from us. We also saw a heard of wild ponies and a bobcat that was the size of our pitbull.pit bull. We didn't get to walk the trail very far because we ran into the bison, but that was okay with us. If you haven't been to the painted canyons, it is a must-see on a road trip.

One of the best overlooks in the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park with beautiful views of the Badlands that stretch for miles in every direction. Many hiking trails around the area and with the scenic loop drive closed due to the road eroding, access to the overlook now requires a "to and back" ride that's approx. 24 miles long. There are several pull outs along the way for scenic photography as well as large vehicle turn arounds in designated areas for trailers and large vehicles to turn around.

This is the last overlook after 24 miles of driving before you have to turn around on the former “Scenic Loop” road.
There is a small parking area and great views of the vista. Just remember to be courteous. We wanted just a minute to take in the views, wind and everything nature had to offer but a man had to tell other travelers (loudly) of all the places he has been.

The Caprock Coulee Trail Loop at a little over 4 miles is an extension of the Caprock Coulee Nature Trail (out and back). We spent about 3 1/2 hours on the trail, but also took a break for lunch and several picture breaks. We thought the trail was moderate due to some elevation changes in the first half.
The views from the trail were fabulous, but we also enjoyed getting away from the road traffic for a while. We thought the yrail was pretty well maintained and marked.

The southern half of this trail is probably the best hiking trail in all of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, South and North unit. You can make a loop of it, or do it as in/out. It has some relevant elevation gain, wear proper shoes. Unbelievable views, and great trail layout on the top of the caprock!
If you are lazy, you can start from the parking lot at the western end and go mostly downhill - but then you need a ‘shuttle’ to get you back; hitch hiking or using two cars

Absolutely one of the prettiest places i’ve seen in North Dakota! It was a long and at times confusing but well worth it! We saw a variety of wildlife such as bunnies, deer and even (from a distance ) buffalo!! Such a great experience and so beautiful. I would 1000% recommend this hike, it ended for us being a 3 hour hike with picture strips of course. At some point the snow was to our hips and super slippery. Definitely an easier hike in better weather!

My friend and I had just come from Glacier National Park so we were riding high on those views and almost running into a mother bear and cub.
We arrived via ridiculously roundabout roads and terrible Google routing to a most amazing ten mile loop. Wild horses, toads, snakes, birds, and of course PETRIFIED WOOD! I’ve never seen it like this, entire tree trunks just standing there in defiance of time.
I wish we’d had time to see anymore of the rest of the park, if it’s as good as this trail I’ll be back.

We loved the Petrified Forest Loop Trail and recommend the trail for any seasoned hiker that has the right equipment, including good boots, hats, appropriate sun protective clothing, snacks, and plenty of water. (Read and follow the trail safety instructions!).
We did the Petrified Forest Loop Trail, starting out a little after 9 am. With a few detours, we estimated we did over 11 total miles on the hike. We spent over 8 hours on the trail, but also made lots of stops. Our detours were to circumnavigate herds of bison who liked to hang out on the trails.
Normally, we would rate the hike as easy. But the length and absence of any shade made the trek difficult.
We loved seeing all of the petrified wood, the wildlife, and also the seclusion of the Loop trail. The only time we saw other people was when we left at the end of the day.

Well worth the short hike in. My expectations was to see a few pieces of petrified wood, when we first saw the area I was surprised to see so many petrified tree stumps. It was very neat to see. Be prepared to go far off trail at times to get around animals; give yourself extra time and wear the appropriate footwear + tick repellent. The Park Service has had to change the driving access route which increases the distance driven on gravel roads from about 6 miles to about 20. Make sure you get a copy of the driving directions from the Visitor Center! Do not use Google Maps to get to or return from the Petrified Forest or you will end up on undriveable roads! We followed the North Trail, not the loop. After dropping down steeply from the parking area, cross a valley on a mostly level trail. Then, climb steadily up to a plateau, cross it, bearing left when you come to the fork in the trail indicating the north and south trails, and then descend very steeply into a valley. The first "alcove" of petrified trees is to the left of the trail. Plenty of petrified tree stumps to photograph. The trail is well worn, so it's easy to follow. Most of the trail is in the open, without shade, so a hat and plenty of water is a must; treking poles are helpful for the steeper areas.

Where to start...first time visit to Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Cottonwood Campground is really one of the best campground we have seen in a national park.
Don't go there with a big rig...we were okay with our class C motorhome but saw one class A struggling to make their way and access a campsite. They should have read the information closely before booking a site there.
There are no services but flushable bathrooms are brand new or very recent and they are clean and well maintained.
One thing that was not obvious was access to water for our RV. Well there is one station right at the entrace to fill an RV, so that was excellent.
But there is no dump site and nothing around. We stopped at some gas stations on our way and despite googlemap telling us that were dumps sites, there was none...so plan ahead and empty way before getting to South or North sections of the park.

We were very fortunate to pick up a first come first serve spot in late August. Got one of the last spots around 2 pm. Did not use bathrooms so I can comment on that. Did see plenty of garbage bins. Did not see a dump station. The spot we got was fine. We shared a pull through with our neighbor Rv. We stopped here on a roadtrip to Montana from Indiana. The campground is right in the middle of the park in the south unit. This makes the location pretty good. The views from the campground are pretty cool and we seen bison right outside the campground. The bathrooms are clean though there are no showers. Theodore Roosevelt is definitely a hide gem. I would definitely stay here again whenever I come back to the area.

Very nice campground in a spectacular location! The only thing needed for a five star rating from me would be showers. The sites are spacious and fairly private, each with a picnic table and either fire pit or charcoal grill. The very nice clean, new bathrooms are located in the center of the loops with back door paths to them, and you do have to be watchful of bison wandering through the campground! Water spigots and dumpsters are located throughout the campground, and they have recycling for plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Handicap sites have spigots and trash cans at the site.
The campground was full every night we were there, so get there early if you don’t have a reservation. Odd numbered sites are reservable and even numbers are first come first serve.
The park is amazing! Spectacular landscapes, lots of wildlife, great hiking trails, dark night skies and beautiful sunsets.

Amazing place! While the actual site of Theodore Roosevelt's cabin is a little underwhelming, this was still my favorite part of my visit to this national park.
As everyone else is noting, this place is very remote and there's no cell phone signal. There are no signs indicating where it is until you reach the parking lot itself, so be sure you have directions to and from the site beforehand.
The short hike was nice, but honestly I think my favorite part was just the drive. Gorgeous untouched landscape. I got there late in the day and while I was a little anxious driving back on the unfamiliar dirt roads as it was getting dark, the sunset over the landscape made it well worth it.
Frankly, I'm jealous of Theodore Roosevelt for having such a perfect plot of land for a secluded cabin.

Drove here on a dry, sunny day, in a Prius. Took both the north and south approaches, and the approach from the north unit is easier, and involves less travel on dirt roads. The roads themselves are good, except for the final three miles up to the ranch site. Watch out for ruts, and drive carefully to avoid getting your tires stuck. If you've driven on country roads before, this isn't as bad. I personally found the road to Chaco Canyon to be far more challenging.
That being said, this place is absolutely magical. You can feel the stirrings of history here. Understanding Teddy Roosevelt almost requires a visit to this place. He came here to escape from the world, to heal from a great personal tragedy, and to rediscover his love of nature. There very likely would never have been a national park system like what we have without his time here. It's worth your time to come.

Highly recommend to take time and see the show. Performers and band are wonderful. The variety act was great too. Show is 2 hours long with an intermission. They invite the little ones on stage. So cute. We were in section 4 row G. Perfect location to see all the action on stage. There is an elevator or walkway to the mezzanine level. If you don’t want to or can’t take stairs, I recommend the upper level. There are several stairs to get where we sat. When the show is over they dismiss by row. This was so nice and controlled the vehicles exiting.

We caught the last show of the season. The set was neat. You could see a lot of work was put into making it what it is.
The kids portion was awkward and uncomfortable. They taught the kids how to sign This Little Light of Mine. Didn't know I was going to church too. And the mascots were staring at the adult audience the entire time. Just, why? Seemed creepy and just odd.
The cover songs for the rest of the show were entertaining enough. The buildings moving and the horses added absolutely nothing to the show and seemed more effort than they were worth.
The act after the intermission was promising. Started out great, but then the rest of the show got rained out.
It was an experience for sure, but not the sort of thing I would recommend to anyone traveling out that way.

Through a communication error, we bought tickets for two separate nights. We enjoyed the first show so much that we decided to experience the show again on the following evening. Great campground. I arrived late on a Sunday night, and was greeted by a large Bison who was not expecting such late arrivals. I apologized, and politely made my way to a campsite and set up the tent in the dark. The site was private, clean, and spacious. The bathroom structure was clean, and was centrally located to most of the sites. There was potable water, and clean drinking water (cannot confirm, I brought my own), but overall I was very satisfied. Joseph, who oversaw the campground was polite and kept the campground clean and in order. If I ever have the opportunity to again, I would come back and stay even longer. If you happen to stay at site #9, well then you'll have stayed at the same site that me and my brother in law stayed at. 5 Stars.

Beautiful campground with flush toilets and sinks. No showers yet, maybe in the near future! Roads are paved in the campground. Lots of trees for shade. The little Missouri River comes right along the west side of the campground. Definitely recommend bringing your canoe/kayaks! Lots of hiking can be done in the area. $14 a night per spot unless you you have a senior pass ($7) or some kind of access pass, not sure what that involves. I hardly ever rate places this low, but we had such a poor experience at this campground. When we first got to the campground, it was raining, and a buffalo was wandering through! It seemed so peaceful and perfect- even with the rain. When we came back later on in the day around 4, a construction crew had taken over the area. A worker even parked in our taken campground site. There were no warning signs that this would be happening. If we had known a loud asphalt crew would be working the area for hours until 7:30 PM, we would not have stayed. At one point, I had to get back in our car because it was so loud. The workers were back before 7 AM too. Secondly, there’s no running water- which luckily I read about on their website beforehand. But what I don’t understand is why the bathroom that has running water is “closed for winterization” in June. I’m sure this campground is great, but we happened to come on a bad day

While on a road trip in this area in our camper-van in June 2022 we stayed in this campground for 1 night when visiting the North Unit of the Park. Be aware the tiny bugs were very annoying later in the day; and it was pretty hot! When we arrived in early afternoon, there were several first-come, first-served sites to choose from. This trail is what made Theodore Roosevelt national park enjoyable for my wife and I! It is easy with some minor stairs up and down that are not hard to navigate, we did it in 90 degree weather and took our time with no issues.
What really makes this trail enjoyable is if you get the guide, there were none at the trailhead but if you look up “coal Vein nature trail guide” on google it will come up and there are posts throughout that correspond with the guide. If you are following the guide start the trail clockwise. Absolute must if you are in TRNP

There were no more guide booklets left at the trailhead when we got there, but we got one from the visitor center. We asked about the scenic drive and a ranger gave one to us, which really enhanced our experience. The geology of it was the most interesting part, to me, but the hike was nice too. Today we attended the Teddy Roosevelt Brunch in Medora, just outside the South Unit entrance to the NP. It comes with a breakfast buffet, which included scrambled eggs with cheese, and hash brown casserole with cheese, along with many other choices. So we were fat and happy when the former president took the stage. We live in Orlando, so we are used to "character" interactions at Disney. I saw him before the show and called him Mr. President, and he said, "My friends call me Colonel." Colonel it is!
He was a great storyteller, and it was about an hour of him hitting the highlights and heartaches of his public and private life. If you can afford the cost, it's worth it. We had a great time.

We ate at Teddys dining room during our recent visit to medora and Theodore Roosevelt national park. This was our first visit to medora. I’d heard great things about this place, however almost didn’t pick it as I don’t eat meat and there really weren’t any options for me, outside of salad. I knew my husband would love it so we went anyway. Once there, I did ask the waiter if I could get the pasta without the elk and he was so accommodating! And it was so delicious! My husband loved his meal as well and we both had a great experience. Our waiter, Enrico was so friendly and also made our experience very enjoyable. Probably the best service I’ve received in the 4 years I’ve lived in North Dakota.

During our time in Medora, we visited this spot three times, twice for breakfast and once for lunch.
We had three different servers (Sebastian, Jo Jo, and Kinga) and each provided excellent service. While I’m not sure if all of them were visiting/working from outside the U.S., I know Sebastian was from Romania. They were all passionate about their work, extremely friendly, and made our visits memorable.
As for the food, you really can’t go wrong with either breakfast or lunch. The portions were generous, and the prices were fair comparable to other restaurants in the area, especially considering the quality of both the food and service.

We stopped here early on a Sunday for breakfast on the way out of town. It was already pretty busy but we were seated pretty quickly and our food was very fast at coming out. I could see this place filling up fast so my recommendation would be to go early or be prepared for a wait. The food was very good as well. Loved absolutely everything about this place. The food was great and portions definitely dont leave you wanting. The plate shown is the chicken fried steak, out of frame there's also eggs that came with that. The burger we had for dinner the evening before had portions just as generous. Price is reasonable.
The atmosphere is very small town and homey. Restaurant is clean and well run.
But my absolute favorite part was the service. Our server for dinner the evening before was Jody and she was extra amazing. Really, really sweet lady that made the experience that much better. We saw her the next morning for breakfast and she remembered us and asked about our activities we had talked about the evening before. Our server for breakfast was also amazing.
Honestly, it was just impeccable service in a charming town with portions you cant argue with. You can't really ask for more. Definitely check it out if you're in Medora.

This is about halfway through the park. There is a pull off for about 7 cars. The path is paved, wide and fairly easy to navigate for those who might have difficulty walking. There are at least two benches along the short path for people to rest and enjoy the view. For the more adventurous, the concreate path leads into a dirt path which leads out to a hill about 1/8 mile farther on that you can see from the paved path. The views are excellent and worth the hike.

Loved it as always. Saw at least 5 different bands of horses and two of them walked right next to the car. It's normal to see a band of two, but I've never seen 5 different bands and never this close. (This was all during one evening drive.)
I won't forget the bison. Normally, I see them closer to the road, but I guess they let the horses have the spotlight for once. Still, beautiful and majestic beasts.
Prairie dogs are plentiful as always. Each year they get less scared of humans and some are even curious enough to sneak a little closer when they think you might have food. (Please don't feed them.)
I've seen tons of animals before, like cyotes, elk, pronghorn, antelope, all types of birds like hawks and magpies, and of course the guys I mentioned above are almost guaranteed.
The walking trails are great, many on the drive are great for kids. Lots of overlooks, and picture worthy places.
If you're ever out by Dickinson, ND (Medora, Beach, Montana boarder area) stop by for a drive. One vehicle pass lasts one week and an annual pass is worth it if you go more than twice. Highly recommend!

Ranger Brian said some bison had been scene around Peaceful Valley Ranch. We went for a hike crossing the Little Missouri. On the way back, about 20 bison were on the trail between us on the east shore of the river and the ranch.

The trail is fairly well marked out mosy places but quite easy to lose once it snakes through the prairie. I definitely recommend a GPS or good map incase you lose your way. If it is summer, be sure to bring extra water! The terrain is fairly flat with a few inclines scattered throughout. This dinner was part of an all over amazing day at Medora. It was like the preview to their famous summer evening musical. They cook multiple steaks on a pitchfork and have the food/sides line to go through first. Texas toast, baked potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, fruit, cold veggies. We each got a 10oz steak (plenty). Drinks included were lemonade, water or coffee. They had alcohol for purchase.
Dessert was mini donuts or brownies.
Plenty of seating with live music that was not overwhelming. And the view!!!! We all sat at the top of the hill with amazing views and the rainy weather cleared in time for dinner. A fabulous time an we were set for the rest of the night.

The Pitchfork Fondue was a unique and fun dining experience set on a stage with an absolutely stunning view of the surrounding area. The steaks were what we expected since they were essentially fried. We noted that the dining "host" reminded the visitors frequently that the event staff would "make it right" if you didn't like how your steak was cooked. The buffet offered plenty of side dishes and we walked away full.

I came in with quite high expectations after paying $50 to get in for the steak meal. Unfortunately, my expectations weren't met. The steak itself was very good, but I found the buffet to be lacking in options. They offer beans, garlic bread, baked potatoes, cole slaw, and a couple of other options as side courses. I found there to be a notable lack of fresh fruits/veggies and dressings - I understand that it is hard to get fresh produce out to such a rural area, but I also paid a whole lot of money to get in.

We stopped in here twice for dinner during our time in Medora.
On our first visit, I had the Bourbon BBQ Burger, which was much better than the burger I had at the Little Missouri Saloon, though to be fair, it wasn’t a direct comparison since I ordered an Elk Burger there. The French fries at Boots Bar & Grill were also noticeably better than those at Little Missouri.
Our first server, Jadon B., was excellent, friendly and attentive. Our second server, Bruce C., was so-so.
As for the pizza, it wasn’t exceptional, but for being away from the Chicagoland area, it was above average. In fact, our group ordered it twice during our visits.

Stopped here mid September on the tail end of our vacation. We asked our hotels front desk staff thier favourite restaurant in town and he told us to go here. The food was amazing, the service was great and the atmosphere was nice, it was a warm evening so we enjoyed the enclosed patio and saw 3 deer out the back of the restamunching on there diner as well. En route to Montana and we stopped in Medora for a couple nights. The first place we dined at was Boots due to its ratings and the menu overall looking the best.
Came at around 5 PM on a Saturday and they weren’t that busy. We got a seat at the bar upstairs where our waitress was amazing. Super friendly, chatty, and loved talking about the history of the town and gave some great menu suggestions.
I got the White Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and my partner got the Killdeer sandwich (basically a Philly cheesesteak). We both shared each. Overall, both were fantastic! The chicken sandwich was flavorful and the sauce was great. The cheesesteak was great also.
We ended up coming back the next day and I got the Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza. I was blown away by it as well. The crust was crispy and the toppings were fresh and flavorful.
Overall, Boots is definitely a winner! If you’re staying in Medora, this is THE local place to go! I’ll easily come back.

The pictures tell the story about the meals (Hot Beef, Pulled Pork special, kids chicken nugget meal (in the car) and chicken tenders and hash brown.
Lots of cowboy and rodeo photos on the walls, always pay homage to the “Six Pack” (ask if you don’t know).
The hot beef is the #1 in North Dakota for a reason!!
Unknown to us, they dropped a chicken strip on delivery to our table. They went and grilled a replacement and brought it out on its own plate to make sure we weren’t short-changed. They had old fashioned Sarsaparilla root beer!

We had an incredible time at the Chateau. The interpretive center was VERY kid friendly and informative. We could have stayed in there for well over an hour. Jacob was our historian/guide at the Chateau. He was so incredibly knowledgeable and very generous with his time. Very cool historic home to tour that teaches you a lot about the history of Medora and its founding family. I love touring historic homes and this one was unique to me, because it was a blend of upper class mansion and western farmstead. A good portion of the furnishings are original to the home which was great to see. When you buy your tickets at the visitors center before you go to the house make sure you go through the gallery to learn more about the family and their background before you tour the home. Staff was super helpful and happily answered any and all of my questions.

The North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame is a fun tribute to a way of life. The museum has a small theater that showed two films while we were there. The first was about cowboys and the second was more about the history of the area. Exhibits focused on early cowboys, the cattle trails, Native Americans, and rodeo legends and honors of the Medora area. We did not visit the 2nd level of the museum. The exhibits are very well laid out.

Even with one hole missing from the round there was nothing to complain about. Power carts are clean and GPS equipped. Staff was courteous and friendly. The amount of merchandise available in the pro shop was surreal. You could play a poor round here but you would forget your play quality because of the surrounding beauty of the Badlands. If you crave elevated tee boxes the the back 9 is undoubtedly the place to go.
The regular season is forecasted to end September 29. Take a break from whatever you are doing and come enjoy this remote treasure; you will have no regrets.

There are a few cannon ball concretions of you just stop and look around. But if you want to see more and better examples all the rangers. Tell them you saw the few from the pull out here but you wanted to see some more. They have some secret spots that they only tell you about if you ask.
There are about 6 or 8 good examples at this pull out and a few more of you do part of the hike but the good ones are by ranger only😁

This was a great stop at the southern edge of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The visitors center overlooks north and you can see the Painted Canyon. There’s a few trails that you can take. There’s long trails or one that is close to a mile. Slow down and stroll thru this incredible area of rolling hills and see some bison on some of the hills before you and then the unique shapes and structures of flow stones all around you. The colors and the contour changes are pretty nice to see. Well worth a stop and take a break and enjoy!!

We were excited to get to experience prairies but devastated to see how poorly they were doing with smooth brome, Kentucky bluegrass and Japanese brome.
