This one is kind of weird. It's very cool and feels like it should be a bigger attraction, but the parking and site are hidden behind a YMCA with no signage. I don't know if that's intentional to keep tourist traffic down, but a huge site like this with some pretty interesting history should be a little more popular. This is the ridge between palolo and manoa. Once you get higher, the south shore and airport is comes in view along with diamond head and kokohead. You can stop and turn around at any point, but if you keep hiking, top very top offers great views of the east side of oahu as well.
The terrain is rough but not very dangerous. This is not a walk in the park, so better shoes are recommended and I do suggest lots of water.

It is a beautiful hiking area but I would say depends how far you want to go up. The base area has a parking lot and picnic tables, very family friendly. But once you start the hike I’d say it is more for advanced hikers. Mainly because it cab be muddy and there are even parts where you use a rope to climb a slippery area. Years ago I cut through a botanical garden and was amazed at the flowers and plants. Not boring at all! Now I seek them out.
Today I looked to see how far I could get on a biki bike and the last station is near Foster botanical garden in Honolulu. Best $5 admission I spent this trip. It’s hard to get it from the photos but the trees - oh the trees!! - absolutely incredible.
I had no idea there were so many type of palm trees. The Baobab, cannonball, and candle trees…the pitcher plant and butterflies. Great for families. I spent 2 hours here taking my time. A must see!
And as a Christian I have to say that this absolutely brought me closer to God in wonder.

Beautiful place with wonderful views, however if you come during raining season prepare to bring ponchos/rainjackets as it can get pretty rainy at times (more than I was expecting). Also put on bug spray (they sell at the gift shop if you don’t have), it is absolutely a necessity as I got bitten pretty badly on my legs. If you are sensitive to bites, I would also recommend long sleeved clothing. Personally will not be returning due to my sensitivity to bites but definitely worth checking out once for some great nature sights.

If Waimea Valley feels like a well-curated garden of Hawaiian endemic plants, this place feels more like nature’s wild side—diverse, lush, and almost primitive. The trails are quieter, more private, and give you the sense that you’re walking closer to nature. Plus, catching glimpses of the mountain range from inside the valley was a nice surprise.
But fair warning: the mosquitoes here are thriving! During our whole stay in Oahu, we barely saw any, but today they threw a party. I gave a donation at the visitor center, while my wife ended up giving a “blood donation” to the mosquitoes. 🦟😂

I went hiking with a friend on a Tuesday afternoon. She made the ticket reservation for us the Sunday before we visited and entrance was smooth/ no wait, the road driving up to arboretum was a little rough with some pot holes but parking lot already had lovely views. It was overcast during our visit and dew covered a lot of the flowers we saw. Overall very lovely visit, just be prepared to watch your step since the route goes through both root-filled and paved areas. They also have a water spigot at the end in case your shoes get muddy. We sprayed our legs with bug spray before and didn’t get bitten. The Hawaiian section is lovely, but is a bit of an incline, views at the highest part were gorgeous. The visitor center was also very well kept. In case you forget water they sell bottles for $1 and souvenirs/shirts as well.

Low level difficulty, took our 4, almost 5 yr old and a small dog and we did it in about 3 hours with lots of snack and drink stops. I’d say one of my absolute favorite trail hikes when it comes to the views you get for the effort you put in. A couple spots can get muddy if it’s rained, there’s roots and uneven ground but still doable if it’s a rainy day. There are options to do the side hikes to see the waterfall or accidentally go onto a marine base(don’t do it, 1000$ fine easy). The view of pearl harbor isn’t great but still scenic. The biome changes from native large red trees, To strawberry guava trees which are invasive and are outcompeting the local trees, to then the pale white eucalyptus with the incredibly beautiful colors in the bark to then Norfolk pine to back to the red soil and large native Luhas. Such immense beauty.

It's pretty difficult to find more information about Keaīwa Heiau Campground and it doesn't have its own pin on Google Maps therefore I'll try to put some information together here. If you go to Honolulu and you're planning to camp close to the city, this is the spot for you. Camping here is inexpensive, I think $30 per party per night for non-Hawaiian residents. The Campground is in 300m (1000ft elevation). 10 camping spots (one above the parking lot, three in the forest, 6 on the grass lawn). None of them has flat even ground for the tent. Probably the best and level spot for tent is between sites 4B and 3B. Stairs to the restrooms are not on the best shape, steep and narrow. Facilities old, missing mirror, soap, shower head, door for washroom / toilet. There is no power outlet. We camped by ourselves, there was no one else which made the experience little weird. What surprised us is the amount of the cats, they're everywhere, maybe 70 of them. In the morning chickens and roosters.

Warning: This campground's terrain is not well suited if you have a handicap person in your group. There is an extremely steep descent down steps/stairs so be prepared for lugging your gear up and down, and walking to and from the bathroom, there are lots of roots, slippery leaves. Fun and super busy!! We live on the North Shore so when we come to town for vet appointments we try out different dog parks and this is our favorite so far. There were so many large well behaved dogs and the neighborhood was super cute. There was water, the grass was nice and the people there were great! It's always a bummer if we show up to a dog park and there aren't any dogs...then it's just a park. Had lots of great conversations with other dog owners. Wow, A' ala Park! I know this is one of my favorite places. I enjoy lounging in the plush green grass. Often I spend several hours there amongst some trees, resting in the cool shade, sitting around talking story, et cetera, this park is good for a lot of uses.
Caution though, as the place is slightly haunted, it might be time to go, still go. I have heard stories of time past. A stage, baseball diamond, and other parts of the park were different during other times, but however I'm sure it would still look, feel this same to me. Cars would be wildly different. I have met all kinds of people there from all over. We are all children of Aala Park, another one of my fine southern homes with scenic views, of large trees, the river, its deep banks that ebb and flows with the tide, with rustic rock walls. Magic Island is a fun spot to visit in Honolulu because there’s always something going on - people BBQing, couples taking engagement photos, kids playing, runners, hammock loungers… it’s a vibe. I ran a 5K here and loved it since the path is flat and easy. The sunsets are unreal (think fiery pinks and oranges). Just a heads up though that the park closes at night, so make sure to read the car signs so that your car doesn’t get towed!

Although some call this botanical but it is far from it for one, the former royalty 👑 guest house 🏠 or retreat isn't accessible to the public for years as we were told.
Just one restroom 🚻 by the main entrance and for our surprise, the restrooms are very clean and neat.
Overall a little disappointed not have anything discovered except trees, the freeway right next to this park didn't help with the constant noise.
The admission even for locals isn't justified whatsoever, out of state visitors find out the hard way.

Most popular and easiest beach to go in Oahu. It is not the most clean and beautiful but because this beach is right in the front of Waikiki, you can just walk there and enjoy almost everything. The beach is totally city vibe so if you can't stand being crowded you might have to come super early or late night, but you won't see anything or if you rent a car you can go to another beach that more private.

We visited the Koko Crater Botanical Garden during our trip to Oahu, and it was one of the highlights of our vacation! The garden is uniquely located inside the crater of an ancient volcano, which makes for a truly special experience.

多肉植物に詳しい人でなければ、もしかしたら全部サボテンじゃん、、、となってしまうかもしれないが、、、珍しい品種もあれば、自分の庭でも育てている金鯱やファクソニアーナ、柱サボテン等も日本ではまずお目にかかれない本場ならではのとんでもないサイズ感と元気さ。やっぱり気候と土壌がピタリとあい、時間をかけるとこんなに神々しい姿に育つのだなぁ、、、と感動してしまった。無論、多肉植物以外にも様々な植物があり、特にバオバブの巨大サイズはマダガスカル、アフリカ、オーストラリア以外ではかなり珍しいのではないか。
とはいえ、冒頭に書いた通りそんな植物に興味がなくとも、無料で停められる駐車場もあるし、道は比較的きちんと整備されてるので、散歩やランニング、綺麗な花を見に行くのにも良いと思う。私が今回見に行ったのは2025年の6月だが、プルメリアの花は比較的長く通常は6-10月ごろまで咲いているはず。

After visiting Foster botanical garden this was a bit of a let down. There are some very interesting trees and the cactus garden is fantastic but lots of empty or dull segments for a non-botanist.
The trail is rugged so if you trip easy or have poor balance bring hiking shoes and possibly poles.

This was one of our favorite spots during our trip. We ventured out there twice taking different trails each way and exploring all around! My husband and I even danced in the bamboo forest to our favorite song it was magical. The falls were gorgeous but slippery so be very careful. We wore hiking shoes and clothes over our swimsuits the first time the next time we went we wore water shoes and just our swimsuits and brought water. The less you bring the better! We had no trouble finding a parking spots when we went but there is limited parking.

We hiked this in April. It had been raining most days leading up to this, and we actually got rained on while hiking it. It was a beautiful hike though and I love that the waterfall area was swimable. Not too crowded, with free parking. It’s a nice hike, but…The trails can be a bit confusing and slippery in some spots, definitely wear good grippy shoes, and be prepared for mud with any recent amount of rain. There was also one trail towards the back end of the falls that went straight up the side of the steep incline and then basically ended. I turned some kids around who were walking that way because it was truly treacherous in that spot at least.
Other than that, it was a pretty decent moderate to challenging hike, which wound back and forth across the water several times, so if you go, wear good water/hiking shoes that you’re not afraid to get wet!
We hiked in with a backpack with water and a small picnic lunch, which we enjoyed by the falls which were very pretty and refreshingly cool as well. It’s about 2-3 miles in total depending on how much you switch back and forth as you hike.

You do need a permit for this hike! Even though it has been raining (not hard or a lot though) days leading up to this hike (its Hawaii it rains everyday lol) it was not overly muddy and we did not find it too difficult to hike or follow the trail with our 1.5 year old and our 3.5 year old (who hiked the whole thing himself!). I was looking for an entrance to swim in Mānoa Falls because I thought you could swim in the falls. I got lost so I ended up hiking this trail. Hiked from Mānoa Falls and exited at Kalāwahine trail. So, I am not sure if there is any entry point aside from Mānoa Falls. From Mānoa falls, you would have to pass a steep part where you would have to put you feet in between tree roots to pass. Lots of crouching from fallen trees and some narrow path. It was also rainy.

This is a great trail for those that enjoy hiking, it connects with other trails: Manoa Falls, Pauoa Flats, Nu'uanu, and Pu'u Ohia. This trail is more moderate for any experienced hiker... But if you are not that active and or have any pre-existing conditions that make it difficult for you to walk on a steep incline with slippery rocks and mud do not take this hike to avoid injury on your vacation.
It will take about 2 hours round trip and be VERY muddy at the top and will ruin your shoes. This is more of a trail for working out as opposed to a tourist trail.
While out there were many people were in flip flops/tennis shoes not prepared for the mud and rocks. And also has NO water 😬

Magically, a crew of mostly friendly cats appeared to say hello. They looked well fed with clean coats. They accepted some pettings and watched the sunset with me.

My partner and I visited Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park yesterday. The presentation of the park is beautiful—the ocean view is absolutely stunning. This area isn’t exactly a “beach park” but more of a waterfront spot right by the ocean. We noticed that it’s especially popular with locals who come here to surf, boogie board, or even get towed on a board by a boat.
There were also many local families and groups celebrating along the shore with food, music, and gatherings, which gave the place a very community feel. We simply laid out a towel on the grass, sat down for about an hour, and just enjoyed the scenery and the sound of the waves. We didn’t swim, though we did see some people bathing near the breakwater area. Personally, the waves looked a bit too strong for me to go in.
On the positive side, there was plenty of parking available. However, one thing to be aware of is that the surrounding area felt a little rough, and we noticed some homeless individuals walking around.
Overall, it’s a nice spot to relax, enjoy the view, and connect with nature, especially if you’re looking for open space and ocean scenery.

Awesome spot and phenomenal view of the island! **Dangerous** waves come every few minutes. Easy jump in, not so easy getting out. Read the sign and use caution!!! Never go in the water here alone!¡! Very fun but also literally a deadly location. The waves threw me around and I was sucked under repeatedly. There’s a beautiful flowering tree at the center of the park that blooms with vibrant yellow flowers each summer. I got a say, I was nervous about parking for Hanauma Bay, however, it wasn't as bad as people say. First off the parking does not open until 7am and the line starts on the shoulder before you even come up to the entrance. We arrived at 645 and hung out at the lookout just past the entrance until 7. Then we went back and it was easy and plenty of parking was available. Now for the Cove. Outstanding!! The staff gives you a video of where the undercurrents are and where to avoid. The water was so clear and even for my non-snorkeling people there were plenty of fish close to shore swimming around them. The only time it seemed over crowded was checking out gear. It probably took 45 min, so bring your own gear. If I ever come back, I will definitely be going to Hanauma Bay.

My tour at the Mānoa Heritage Center was absolutely amazing!
