Such a quaint way to spend the day, but definitely worth your while. I visited on a very sunny June morning, which was perfect for exploring the ‘grounds’ - a rambling collection of buildings with antiques of all sorts! The highlight was definitely the church building, a fine collection of organs, glass bottles and dolls, complete with Jesus and the Virgin Mary watching over you. Also of note was the Kurtz family chest and its highly detailed accompanying history pamphlet - truly incredible, and the 80 year old wedding cake, perfectly preserved in a class case. At times it felt a bit like walking through an antique shop where nothing was for sale, but the informative plaques and signs were descriptive enough that each room was unique and interesting. There is no heating so inside the museum building itself it was freezing. Make sure you rug up! A huge thanks to the volunteers for making my visit so enjoyable and for ensuring the museum gets to open everyday!

Once on the ground we morphed from guests to crew once more and even got to walk inside the balloon as it was deflating helping to push the air out of it and then assist in rolling it up and stowing it in the trailer. Definitely a first for us. We jumped on the bus to headed back to town for breakfast at a local cafe and sparkling cocktails - local bubbles mixed with either guava or mango juice. All was well. Not quite the romance of popping corks in the field and the pilot laying out breakfast - but given the skeleton crew - seriously yummy and not a restaurant we would go to in the usual course of affairs. I think we might have had to high expectations. This place feels like it peaked a few years back. We had the arancini balls, they had nice texture but no flavours. My new colleagues raved about it. Who doesn't like a good BBQ joint. Amazing decor, the place looks like a million bux. I ordered the mixed plate brisket with pork and sides. I got a chicken taco too. I ordered a cab sav from the bar aswell. Wait time was approx 30 minutes for the food. I also waited a whole at the bar to be served. No biggie, but I get some of the reviews about service from here. Not many smiles, a little lack lustre, but the customer service is still there. Maybe the ladies didnt like the jumper I was wearing beard and long hair 😆 I'm joking people. I did wait a while so that the team could discuss stuff with the owners behind the bar. Tbh would have been a nice touch if they smiled and asked how my day was instead of just being in their own world. Honest thoughts. I was a little nervous about the portion sizes and there was more sides than protein. But tbh I couldnt finish the plate off. I was so full. Other places will perfect their meat and their sides are very basic and have no flavour. This places has really done a great job with their meat which is key, but their sides really wowed me. The first place to truly make me stop for a moment and think about the process and vision of this place. Its not just smoked meat, its the sides and the care and flavour put into them. Food was amazing. 5 out of 5! Service was 4 out of 5. A few smiles here and there would be great and have taken this place to one of the best smokehouses I've been to. Now I encourage everyone is mudgee or driving through to try this place. You shouldn't regret it. We walked in as a table of 5 on a Sunday. It was not overly busy. The coffee was terrible but they did remake it for me. The waffles were nice. Basic but tasted good. The others meals looked nice. The bottles on offer for their tasting are all delicious, it makes it hard to decide which ones to buy. The most memorable was the pipeclay white, which was unique in taste and their signature bottle. They also had a great Chardonnay on offer. The staff are very welcoming, pleasant and fun to have a joke with. The place is set in a restored warehouse with old giant barrels lining the place. You feel like you walked into a museum. The pictures don't do it justice. This place is unlike any other winery in Mudgee. You just have to swing by.
