First climb Mt Ruapehu (2797 m) in winter, from the southern side (Toroa Ski Field). It was harder than I thought. The last 600 m is very steep, and the average slope angle is larger than 40 degrees. Visited Taranaki Falls in September 2025, and it was a truly refreshing and scenic spot in Tongariro National Park! We drove to the trailhead and started the hike, which is an easy to moderate 2–3 hour loop, suitable for most fitness levels.
The highlight, of course, was Taranaki Falls itself — a 20-meter waterfall that plunges dramatically over a lava cliff into a picturesque pool below. The sight of the water cascading with such force, surrounded by greenery and rocks, was mesmerizing. The sound of the waterfall combined with the peaceful environment made it a perfect spot to pause and soak in nature.
The trail also offers great viewpoints, boardwalks over streams, and plenty of photo opportunities. We visited in early spring, so there were patches of snow around, adding a beautiful contrast to the lush forest and crisp mountain air.
Taranaki Falls is ideal for both short hikes and nature photography. Well-maintained, accessible, and breathtaking, it’s a must-visit for anyone exploring Tongariro National Park. A rewarding experience that combines adventure and natural beauty!

Great hike to the falls and back. But the qualification ’easy’ might only apply to young people in excellent shape.
We did a full loop, taking the lower (Northern) route on the way to the falls and the upper (Southern) on the way back. The lower route had a lot of diversity. The terrain was very nice and variable, through high bushes and forests with ferns, over small bridges and along a thundering stream. But it also has a lot of stairs up and down - mainly up towards the end. This path did not feel ‘easy’ to us, but we are in our early 60s and not experienced hikers. By the time we reached the waterfall my legs were shaking because of all those stairs.
The waterfall was stunning, but a loud group of abseiled took away from the serene experience I had hoped for. So far on our trip, a lot of nice waterfalls or hikes are populated with loud groups of abseilers or waterfall jumpers.
The upper path back still had some steep stair steps to the top of the waterfall, but then was relatively flat , and mostly slowly descending, with some steps. The hike took us 2h40 min (not the 2h as advertised) because of the staircases.

Bring some water, snacks, a jacket, good walking shoes (maybe some walking sticks), and plan to spend the day hiking.
I absolutely loved this journey up and down the mountain and through the various scenery you’ll encounter. My wife and I traveled to New Zealand from 🇯🇵 and rented a car to travel around. We booked a shuttle bus that dropped us off on the other side of the trail and hiked. We were pretty underprepared and ended up feeling a little peckish by the end and my bad knee ached for a couple days after but I absolutely recommend this to anyone who loves nature or wants to climb the infamous mountain from lord of the rings.
We spent two weeks in New Zealand and traveled nonstop but this will always be a highlight of our trip and I’m so glad we pulled the trigger to take a day here. Do yourself a favor and make the Tongariro crossing a priority on your next adventure

A bit of a longer walk than the nearby Mounds Walk but not a difficult one by any stretch. It's a well maintained path with lots of stairs and hand rails. It has two view points for the falls and both are well set up for some nice pictures. There is a parking lot but it is very small and was completely full even midweek during the off-season, so plan accordingly. Absolutely worth checking out if you are in the area.

Visited Tawhai Falls (Gollum’s Pool) in September 2025 and it was such a beautiful and peaceful stop! Located in Tongariro National Park, this stunning waterfall is easily accessible with just a short 10–15 minute walk from the carpark. The trail is well-maintained, surrounded by lush native forest, moss-covered rocks and the soothing sound of running water, making it a lovely, relaxing stroll suitable for all ages.
When we reached the falls, we immediately recognized the spot from The Lord of the Rings, this is where Gollum was seen catching fish! Seeing it in real life felt surreal. The waterfall cascades gracefully into a deep blue pool surrounded by volcanic rocks and the view was absolutely mesmerizing. The combination of clear turquoise water, greenery, and the dramatic backdrop of Mount Tongariro made it feel like a hidden gem straight out of Middle-earth.
We visited in early spring and the weather was cool and crisp, with the sunlight creating a magical glow on the water. It’s a perfect spot for photography, peaceful, scenic and not crowded.
Tawhai Falls may be small, but it’s full of charm and cinematic beauty. A must-stop for Lord of the Rings fans and nature lovers alike, quick, easy and incredibly rewarding!

Amazing experience, plenty of bush, rock and mountain. Uneven terrain, plenty of steep grades, but plenty of rest spots and time to take photos or smell the flowers.
The loop requires you to be picked up or walk the mountain road. There are no footpaths and limited margins. Please be mindful, watch oncoming traffic In NZ we normally walk on the right to watch hazards) and cross sides before blind corners - keep yourself safe!
Shortest route is 1.5hrs return, from top of the road about 5km past the village.

Very scenic walk around the bogs and wetlands. Quite a few steps so not suitable for prams. Unique gold rivers and streams all the way up to the rapids, which has a nice viewing platform to see them. Some of the path is low level which can get muddy so choose your foot ware carefully. In my humble, unfit opinion: This is a really tough bike ride for a beginner.
The route is very up and down and it is a hard, steep ride to get you to an 800m elevation. There aren’t many sections where it levels out (which would make for a fun, easy ride), and hardly any wide spots to enable you to take an stress-free break. Make sure everyone in your group understands how to change gears (and when) or they will really struggle.
Due to the (wonderful) heritage nature of the old coach road itself, the terrain is VERY changeable. You will come across many sections with large 100+ year old cobblestones, which makes for a very bumpy ride that can also be quite slippery.
There are steep sections where channels have been created by water over time, and/or other bikers, which can be tricky to navigate safely. There are many gorgeous native bush sections, where the trail widens a little bit but then once again it becomes a narrow gravel trail with tricky, tight s-bends which are hard to manoeuvre as a beginner.
If you aren’t a seasoned MTB rider, please only push yourself to do it one-way. And definitely hire an e-bike.
My friends and I (beginner riders), passed a friendly couple 1km into our ride who said “you’re doing it the hard way!” so my final piece of advice is: if someone says this to you; turn around, get a shuttle to Horopito and ride the trail towards Ohakune. God speed.
Having said all that, it is a stunning trip.

We hired electric MTBs from Kune bikes in Oakune and were dropped off at the Horopito (Smash Palace) end of the Old Coach Road trail and rode back to Oakune. My top suggestions: Hire bikes from TCB in Ohakune. They're friendly and helpful! Ensure you get a soft tail (front and rear suspension as trail is quite bumpy). You shouldn't need an e-bike unless you are very unfit. TCB do shuttles every hour till 12pm most days. They will even lend rain coats and gloves. $60 for bike and $20 for shuttle from memory. Whole event takes between 1.5 & 3 hours depending on how much scenery you stop to enjoy. My suggestion would be to allow half a day as there are lots of places to explore on the bikes even back in ohakune. When you start, be sure to visit the car graveyard (featured in a few classic kiwi movies). The trail is suited to most people who are confident on a bike. Perhaps not suitable for grannies or kids up to 7yo (generalisation) as it's a good 12km + another 3 or 4km back to TCB. Most of its downhill, but 2 decent up hills. Definitely bring a pack with at least 1L of water and plenty of snacks. Over the cooler months it can suddenly get cold so pack windbreaker & warm gear. There is cellphone coverage in most of the high points so contact can be made in emergencies. TCB are great and will drop in for any repairs. This has been one of my favourite mtb experiences. Highly recommended. Oh, and be sure to get pizza from Lake Pizzeria or Thai food from Ohakune Rice bar. Both venues are horribly expensive but so worth the cost with fantastic food!

The drive here is full of beautiful forest sites and it gets slightly uphill as you get nearer.

A Great Winter Experience with Tasty Café Treats!
Had a really fun time riding the gondola up the snowy mountain—such a scenic and enjoyable experience! Once at the top, there's a cozy little café that serves surprisingly good coffee at a decent price. Highly recommend trying their cauliflower fries—crispy, flavorful, and a nice warm snack for the cold weather.
It can get pretty crowded, especially around midday, so be prepared for some lines. But if you're up for a walk, heading farther up the mountain is worth it. The crowds thin out, and it gets wonderfully peaceful. Great spot to play in the snow or just enjoy the winter scenery.
Definitely recommend for a mix of adventure, great views, and a warm drink in hand!

You have the option to take a shuttle for a fee, but I arranged with fellow hikers to leave our vehicle at the trail's end. The hike itself is stunning, especially on a crisp, sunny morning. The journey does become a bit challenging halfway through, particularly at the crossing where the ledge can be slippery, so it's advisable to avoid looking down. Beautiful hike but very though! The start up is steep but doable. Once you get to the top you get rewarded with views over the volcano and the lakes on a clear day. It’s the descent that got us, the road winds down and just doesn’t seem to stop. We are still sore after 2 days haha. I would have hated hiking up here and not getting these views so make sure to check the NIWA forecast before going! It’s pretty accurate!

The hike to soda springs was moderate. There were other people on the trail who struggled and we were tired when we got back to the car after 6kms. The terrain changes considerably over the hike and there was beautiful fauna in later February. You could go the whole 19 kms over the alpine pass but we aren’t that in shape, the weather wasn’t good, and we had more things to see and do before the day was over. If traveling in winter, check that the roads are open.

Great 10km out and back trip. Challenging enough for us all (3 adults and two kids aged 7 and 9)
The weather is freakishly changeable as you can see from the photos. We had all seasons in one walk. Sunny, windy, driving icy rain, gales. It was intense so please be fully prepared for all eventualities. We went at the end of December and packed thermals, beanie, gloves, waterproof gortex jacket, microfleece jumper and we used it all and could have done with another layer at one stage.
The track was well formed and marked but at times the cloud cover/ mist was almost white out. Volcanic rocks and some drop offs as your heading up. We had a slip occur while we were at the top that made a section a bit dicey to navigate.
Pack snacks, plenty of water and a basic first aid and survival kit. This track is in the middle of nowhere. Great reception though at the top 😄

This place is awesome. Family and I took some dirt bikes in for about 3 hours. It's got everything. Scenic overlooks, water crossings, mud, rock, steep inclines and declines, and more. Plenty of side trails and places to explore too.
Trail is wide enough for all but the largest of off-road vehicles but I wouldn't take a fancy new Ute in there. Terrain is pretty rough in spots and traffic goes both ways!

We mountain biked this yesterday (open to 4x4s through the summer) and added it to Google Maps, Museum, was the nearest place category GMaps offered.
As Doc says this is remote ride so be prepared with ideally a personal locator beacon.
We had the NZ Maps App with the cycle maps layer for the area down loaded so could track our location via GPS with no cell service.
There are a few river crossings, recent wet weather will make the ride tricky they're cold!
Halfway in (20km or so) the county opens out into the stunning Whanganui river valley.
There is a fair amount of river Boulder metal used throughout the track so you'll be dodging boulders in your sleep after this.

We hiked this track because the crossing was cancelled both days we were in town. But it was a lot of fun, even in the rain. I would recommend going earlier in the day as it gets a bit crowded as the day goes on. We had the lakes to ourselves for 30 min and we started around 7:15am. We had planned to complete the Tongariro Alpine crossing but were advised against it due to bad weather conditions on the mountain. Our backup was the return hike to Upper Tama lakes. We started at sunrise and were the only ones there when we arrived, saw no one else on the way up to the upper lake. Much busier on the way back so I recommend getting up early to start with the sun. We encountered heavy winds but conditions were otherwise perfect. Layer appropriately, out of the wind and in direct sun it was hot, but in the shade and when exposed to the wind it was very cold, I wore a balaclava to protect from the worst of the wind.

Absolutely beautiful. 3-4hr walk from Whakapapa one-way. The walk to Lower Tama is relatively easy, nice gradient, if long in distance. The walk from lower Tama to upper Tama is beautiful, but a lot steeper. Definitely worth it though. Be careful on the loose rocks. There are plenty of steep dropoffs on every side, but the walkable area is quite wide. I don't recommend trying to swim in either lake; it's a very steep descent/ascent that is potentially treacherous, not to mention culturally questionable given the significance of the lakes to local iwi.

Parking the car felt like playing Russian roulette due to multiple glass shards on the ground from previous car break- ins and wondering if our vehicle would be safe on our return from the walk. The lake itself is beautiful but the walk is longer than suggested on the track information. No toilets available either as a natural attraction. It's worth a walk to the top redoubt - the view is beautiful.
