The island is easy to access via a causeway, and once across you’re greeted with wide walking paths that loop around the coastline. There are two main tracks to the lighthouse, one 1.17 km and the other 1.66 km, so we decided to do both, making a complete circuit to take in all the scenery. The walk itself is varied and interesting. Some sections take you over sandy dunes and along the beach, while others follow wooden stairs and boardwalks through coastal scrub. The paths are well maintained and easy to follow, suitable for most fitness levels. Along the way, we were lucky enough to spot a couple of wallabies grazing in the grass, which was a nice surprise. The lighthouse is the main feature and makes for fantastic photos. On the day we visited the weather was changing quickly from bright blue skies to heavy cloud cover and even patches of dark rain clouds, which created different moods and backdrops for photography. Combined with the ocean views and rugged shoreline, it was a stunning spot to explore. If you’re in Port Fairy, Griffiths Island is definately worthwhile. Peaceful, scenic, and full of character.

It was a small walk of around 700m till the lighthouse. Walk was pretty nice with a bit of clear water walk and then a walk between flora . The weather was no AO great as it started raining as soon as we started to enjoy the view. The lighthouse was nothing spectacular but the overall sea view and a rainbow at back made it mesmerising. Sea waves were big and the rocks made them look magnificent. A must place to visit in Port Fairy. They brought sheep and cattle across from Tasmania and established a permanent settlement. In 1843 James Atkinson and William Rutledge each purchased 5120 acres from the Crown at the cost of £1 per acre. A condition of buying the land (called a Special Survey) at this low price was that the buyer was required to establish a town and encourage settlers. Atkinson laid out his township and named it “Belfast” after his birthplace. William Rutledge failed to establish a town on his survey and it was considered a failure. Irish immigrants were encouraged to settle here and this strong Celtic influence is still evident in the area, in the place names, architecture and culture. Atkinson operated his township under the tenant system where the occupier of the land would pay rent to the land owner. Settlers would build a house at their own cost on land they rented from Atkinson. Because of this system it appears that Atkinson was disliked although this was perhaps unfair as he gave land for community purposes such as schools, churches, lecture hall and library. Atkinson died in 1862 however his family held onto his lands and it was not until 1886 that the land became available to purchase freehold. In 1887 the residents of Belfast petitioned the Government to rename the town Port Fairy. In 1862 the disastrous collapse of the local firm, William Rutledge & Co. dealt the town a paralysing blow. In the ensuing years investors abandoned Port Fairy in favour of other towns such as Warrnambool and the early promise that Port Fairy had shown failed to materialise. Today we have that economic downturn to thank for the many historic houses and buildings from that era that remain.

Fantastic location in walking distance to everything. Located right on the water of the river. You can hear the ocean. I’m thoroughly rested snd relaxed! The house is wonderful -beautiful bedding, decor, and a fabulous large kitchen with everything you could want. The highlight for me was the exquisite courtyard garden. We spent many pleasant hours listening to the water feature and enjoying the lovely flowers. The location is perfect- close to everything (the Moyne River wharf, Griffith’s island (don’t miss it!), merrijig inn (garden fir drinks, book in advance for dinner),. Hosts Berni and Brett are simply wonderful. They spoiled us rotten! We extended our stay 2 nights to be met with a thank you hamper of wine and yummy treats! Our fog even got a birthday toy and hat! We are lucky to have here visiting sanderlings, red stints, hooded plovers that breed here as well as red capped plover having rheir young here also. If you like bird photography, you'll get some great shots here of diving terns too, with a few varieties that sit over on the rock shelf off the beach. Also, when tide is half out (to ensure the birds have space) lie in the sand and keep still with your camera and the birds will come closer and youll get some really good photos.
