The service was so friendly, attentive and warm, Rodney was absolutely charming and made us the best Caipirinhas we’ve ever had, and we’ve had many. We felt as though we’d made a new friend by the time we left the restaurant. We have already recommended Adega d’Alvor to friends who visit nearby Lagos several times a year and will be back without a doubt on our next visit.

We were picked up at our hotel in Alvor and brought to the marina in Portimao for free (typically €7 Uber). We headed east directly along the coast with our guide describing various landmarks along the way. We sailed into the caves and it wasn't as crowded as expected, each boat waited for the next. We did opt for the early 11.30am trip. Also it's now not allowed for people to go on the beach inside. The sandstone caves were beautiful and on the way back we hugged the coast and visited many of the smaller caves with our guide describing everything in detail. On the fast stretches we skimmed across the waves and screamed like children asking for more!! 2 hours later back at the marina and a free mini bus back to our apartment. Everyone on the boat gave a cash tip for the Skipper and guide and righty so, they deserved it! The booking for the 11.30 trip stated pickup 15mins before and be ready 15 mins before. We rightly read this as be ready outside our apartment at 11.00am. Our fellow customers at the hotel next door didn't come out until 11.15 and we just made it to the marina for 11.30. Great trip, highly recommended and much more fun than the slow larger (overcrowded) boats we saw on the way.

Peggy who we booked with was so friendly and helpful, collected from our hotel on time and the boat took us out for about 2 hours overall. The waves were a bit choppy which couldn't be helped but i felt that the cave stops were a bit rushed. Our 2 tour guides were lovely too, one portuguese speaking and one english speaking. Other passengers were able to get a quick swim in at the end before getting us back to the harbour at Portimao. If there is one small criticism i have, it is that i didn't feel completely safe or comfortable on the transfer drives, this is because the driver drove fast and used his phone quite a lot while taking us to and from Portimao. Overall a great experience but maybe have a word with your driver.

The boat was clean and comfortable and the trip was a very successful morning! We all really enjoyed ourselves. Our charter occurred in August 2025. The Capt. Miguel upon initial greeting was extremely rude, condescending and arrogant, this behavior continued throughout the 6 hrs charter. Anything we did that wasn’t to his liking he would say: “how do you not know this? Everyone internationally knows how to do this!” He wanted to cancel the trip the night before we were supposed to go fishing. Nelson his brother was not constantly belittling us like his older brother the Capt, he was not unfriendly but didn’t want to be involved much at all. Most of the time he was on the bow fishing by himself or up top smoking cigarettes. If the Capt wasn’t on deck yelling snide comments or rolling his eyes with his hands up in the air then he was in the cabin on his phone or texting. Watching the depth sounder he didn’t take us to any reefs or any locations that would typically be “fishy” never once did any fish show up on the sounder. Finally my father caught an 11 inch mackerel. The Capt seemed surprised that we caught something. We asked if he wanted to bleed this tiny bait fish or if he wanted us to ( bleeding fish is standard as it allows the blood to not congeal and renders a higher quality fish for consumption) he replied bleeding a fish makes a mess on his boat and that’s not allowed! We realized the cooler he brought had no ice in it to keep our catch, the temperature was over 90F degrees. It began to dawn on us he did not intend for us to catch fish. He wanted our money and was annoyed he had to spend 6 hrs fishing with us. I don’t mind going on a charter and not catching fish. Charter boats I’ve worked on in the past typically combat low catch number by making a lil local tapa, creating fun banter, telling jokes, creating games on board such as name that song while playing music over the boat speakers. It makes it a fun experience even if no fish are caught. He didn’t want to catch us fish and the only effort he put in was to make it a miserable experience at all costs verbally and keeping the boat in the trough to maximize an uncomfortable and rocky ride in fairly calm seas. To give context to my experience at sea: I’ve commercially jigged, long-lined, seined, drift netted, pot fished, and trapped fished (salmon, crab, black cod, PEA cod, octopus, yellow eye, halibut, many more species commercially). I’ve also worked aboard charter boats in the customer service industry. I have accumulated over 2,000 hrs at sea in small boats, sail boats, charter boats, boats 100’ feet + and have in fact crewed with many friends who were on the Alaska TV show the “Deadliest Catch.” I’ve worked with very honorable and noble Captains and sadistic captains alike. We had paid for top package which had all the wines to taste and cheese, salami & crackers. We had an explanation of the winery and a bit in each wine but as we had it in the experience in the shop there was people walking in and out from another party which made it very disjointed as Bruno spent more time serving at the counter when the other party wanted something instead of explaining what the wines would accompany etc. just for context, there had been a storm overnight but had dispersed, if this was the reason we were in doors, ok but they should have given the option as there were others outside. Not worth €135 for the 3 of us but this may just have been due to the interruption which in turn left us feeling we hadn’t had what we had expected.

It worked out very well for our travel schedule - but also because that meant it was nice and quiet. The hosts were very warm and gracious. They noted that we had taken a liking to the view by the terrace and welcomed us to sit there - setting us up with some water and all the good things they had lined up. Our tasting included Villa Alvor Colheita white, rosé and red wines, which reflect the originality of the Algarve terroir. All remarkable wines, and well priced so we took a few bottles to go. The absolute highlight was the time spent with a school of wild dolphins — a magical, emotional experience that we'll never forget.
