It's a less known tourist place. A small room includes many artefacts of the very old gompha that was badly damaged by earthquake. Hence after it has been rebuilt and the old pictures have been renovated with painful skills of INTACH. The items included were wonderful. The upstairs gompha was closed. I would appreciate if a larger room with a short history of Kalimpong Lepchas are also included in the museum.

The Lepcha museum in Kalimpong is well worth a visit . There are two small museums next to eachother : the Lepcha museum and the Lepcha Gompa museum . They may well be locked but ask someone on site or ring the telephone number on the wall and someone will let you in . They are a little ramshackle but fascinating. The Lepcha museum is one of a kind , a record of way of life that no longer exists .Itsfree to get in but receives no funding so relies on donations . The guide who is the son of the founder and original curator will bring the items to life playing the musical instruments and working the animal traps. The swords are fascinating I’ve never seen anything like them anywhere else. Honestly it’s tiny but this place is worth the visit

I had a peaceful and enriching experience visiting Geden Tharpa Choling Monastery Situated in a calm and scenic location, the monastery is a beautiful place to spend some quiet time. The architecture and surroundings reflect traditional Buddhist culture, and the atmosphere inside is very serene.

The building is beautifully designed and painted with many manuscripts stored inside. The Lama took us to the next building which houses a museum having ancient artifacts and relics. Another beautiful monastery in Kalimpong. This is a Must visit as well. We could not go inside as it was closed that day and hour, but the outside view is so tremendously beautiful and awestruck us that we sat there for the view and amazingly peaceful vibrations. Visiting monasteries have become my favourite thing post these two (Durpin) monasteries visit. The beauty of this monastery is the huge Buddha statue in Gold facing the city. It's amazing. Our driver Dev brought us to Durpin Monastery during our stay in Kalimpong. I didn’t know what to expect, it was just part of our sightseeing plans, but the moment we arrived, I felt an immediate sense of peace. The monastery sits quietly at the top of Durpin Dara hill, overlooking the valley below. The air was fresh, the views were wide and open, and the space itself felt sacred. It was beautiful, still, and calm. We all loved it.
That morning, as we were leaving, I received a message on social media from Norbu, someone who had been following my journey online for quite some time. She said she had just seen that we were in Durpin Monastery, and that she lived there but was traveling to Sikkim that day. Her husband, she shared, was The Holy Rinpoche of Durpin Monastery. She invited us to come back the next morning to meet her. It felt serendipitous, like something we were meant to do.
So on July 31, before heading to Darjeeling, we returned. Norbu and Lama Dorjee were already waiting for us when we arrived. From the moment they saw us, they greeted us with such warmth and sincerity, the kind that goes straight to your heart. Lama Dorjee prayed for us, and then walked us through the monastery, taking his time to explain the meaning of the sacred rooms, the lineage, and the energy of the space. It was one of the most peaceful and meaningful religious experiences of my life.
Afterward, Norbu gently took us to meet her husband, the Rinpoche. What unfolded in those next moments is almost impossible to put into words. We were welcomed not just as visitors, but as family. The Holu Rinpoche offered us personal blessings, prayers, sacred threads, and even a small statue of the protector deity, Guru Rinpoche, he had blessed himself. I was moved to tears. My husband felt it too, something shifted for both of us. Something deep. Spiritual. Timeless.
And it wasn’t just us. Our daughters immediately connected with Norbu in a way I’ve rarely seen. They clung to her. They laughed, they talked, and when it was time to leave, they cried. That, more than anything, told me what kind of love they felt in her presence. She welcomed us into her home, gave us warm milk from her cow, tea, incense, beautiful tablecloths for our altar, Tibetan snacks, thoughtful gifts, all with a grace and generosity I’ll never forget.
She made us feel not like visitors, not like tourists, but like we belonged. Like we were meant to be there. And maybe we were.
We came to Kalimpong thinking we were here to meet my old friend Yang, but now I know, the universe brought us here for something much deeper. To be blessed by The Holy Rinpoche. To meet a true sister. To receive something we didn’t even know we needed.

There are two majestic sights that dominate the Kalimpong skies. One is nature’s Kanchenjunga, and the other is man’s MacFarlane church. It is know as the oldest Bhutanese monastery in Kalimpong built in 16 century, while the current structure has been repaired.
This place is replete with childhood memories of visiting every Sunday with your parents n a must visit for people who were born in Kalimpong but staying away for studies, employment etc. I have sweet memories of visits with my late father n I always used to insist on turing all the prayers wheel available there. 😊
It is a two storied structure, with the upper floor housing the main Buddha statue, however since COVID the upper floor is not not open and all pay homage to the New Buddha statue on the ground floor along with seats of the Ripoches.
The lower floor has parquet flooring and donation box for the laymen to contribute for the upkeep of the monastery.
Earlier the oil lamps used to be burnt in a room located in the first floor next to main alter but the same shifted many years ago to building near by. This has prevented the frescos from getting damaged due oil n smoke.
The religious dances or cham. Is also held in the ground in front of thr main building..
Please do note the current timing are 6am to 5 pm.

Located on Upper Cart Road, Ward 18 in Kalimpong, this house, once built by the Zamjnders of Gouripur of Mymensingh District of East Bengal, has a great historical value. In this house between 1938 and 1940, famous Bengali Nobel Laureate Poet Rabindranath Tagore lived on three occasions. From this house in 1938, a live broadcast was made by the All India Radio , of a recitation by the Poet of his famous poem 'Jannadin'.
The house was thoroughly damaged during the Gorkhaland Movement in early nineties and arson, destruction of number of memorabilia of the poet was reportedly made by the miscreants during that time. Since then the house remained in a deplorable condition.
As an ardent follower of Tagore and his creations, I always wanted to see this important place and during my recent trip to Kalimpong, I made it a point to visit this famous landmark building. I was shell shocked to see the pathetic state of the building. More surprisingly, this famous building is lying in such poor condition for over 25 odd years at the height apathy of successive Governments that ruled in West Bengal. It's a wonder that the structure didn't gave in during this long period of neglect. In 2018, the State Heritage Commission of West Bengal woken up from their long slumber and declared the building as a Heritage Property and started its restoration. It is more shocking that in last six years very little progress appears to have been made in completing tho job.
We somehow managed to enter the area and saw the building from outside. Two camphor trees planted by the poet stand tall in front of the building. A mixed feeling of shivering ( thinking that once that great personality used to stay here) and sadness ( seeing the apathy of ours to take care of such an important historical monument) possessed me. Anybody gave interest in Tagore and his creations should visit thus place.

I give this place a five-star rating for its historical value. However, I am saddened to see that the government is not maintaining this place. এই বর্ষায় সবাই যখন উত্তরবঙ্গের দুর্যোগ নিয়ে চিন্তিত, সেই সময় আমি চলে গিয়েছিলাম কালিম্পং এর বর্ষামুখর প্রকৃতিকে উপভোগ করতে। এই সময়টাকে বাছা আরো একটি কারনে ট্যুরিস্ট থাকে কম। মন ভরে ছবি তোলা যায়, উপভোগ করা যায় জায়গাগুলো। যেকোনো জায়গা যাওয়ার আগে একটু পড়াশোনা প্রয়োজন বইকি, প্রয়োজন লিস্টের, সাথে একটু ম্যাপটা দেখাও দরকার বলে মনে করি। এটা সবার জন্য নয় যারা solo যায় বা explore করতে ভালোবাসে তাদের জন্য এই উপদেশ ☺️।
আজ আপনাদের নিয়ে চলে এসেছি কালিম্পং এর বাজার থেকে মোটামুটি ১ কিঃমিঃ দূরে লিঙ্কিং পং রোডের ওপর অবস্থিত Kalimpong Nature Interpretation Centre বা কালিম্পং ফরেস্ট মিউজিয়াম এ। শুধু আপনার ভালোলাগবে তাই নয়, সাথে যদি থাকে বাচ্চা তাদেরও ভিষন ভালো লাগবে।
