The sun was out and the surf was up….kind of, we were here for August bank holiday Monday so got here at around 10am ….and at 10.30am they were heading up the road with the car park full/closed signs, so get here early. There is a great little beach hut cafe selling pasties and rolls , coffee etc also a little shop selling beach tat. There is also a restaurant there for the more refined palate. There is a surf shop and surf school for all your surfing needs. The beach itself was clean and massive! Check the tide times…at low tide it’s quite a walk to get to the sea. I took the kids body boarding which they loved…the waves were big enough without being scary and we never ventured over waist depth. It’s dog friendly so plenty of ankle biters yapping and changing around but not too much of a nuisance. We took our own gear but you can hire everything there if you want to, including windbreaks, chairs, even beach tents…they do a complete beach camp set up for £20 there’s even huts available for £30. All in all a fab day was had by all, topped off by having fish and chips at squires in nearby Braunton.

Accessed by a toll road (£2.50) with a electronic barrier with quite a few speed bumps and passing places before you reach the large parking area which is gravel and can be a bit muddy after prolonged rain. Parts of the area are Army training grounds but are still accessible. There are expansive views up river to Barnstaple and across to Instow and Appledore and out to sea. No toilets or places to get refreshments so you’ll need to make sure you have everything you need for the day. There’s a lot of driftwood on the beach for children to make camps and shelters and the odd shipwreck to play with. On a warm summer’s day it’s a lovely place to spend some time walking in the dunes but be aware that there are Adders and it’s best to keep your pet close by as it’s a slow drive to the nearest vet in Braunton.

What a lovely beach. There is a surf shop and an ice cream shop but these were never open when we visited in May and again in July. However the entrance to the beach does need some upkeep and the toilets aren’t very well kept.You almost wonder if you’ve come to the right place, but once you hit the sand dunes and get on to the beach. Just wow ! Masses of space. Very clean beautiful sand. Well marked out areas for the life guards to drive down to the water. Plenty of space for swimmers and surfers. Go for a walk when the tide is out and go to the rock pools to see what wildlife you can find. Take a kite as there is plenty of space and wind. Easy access from the main road there is a car park which charges I believe by the hour (didn’t park here as we were staying two minutes walk from the beach) We loved it here so much we would visit every day.

Absolutely wonderful place. Booked through Sykes Cottages. It's enormous with great facilities. 6 large double bedrooms, multiple reception rooms with a quirky style. Sonos soundbar and access to multimedia like Netflix and Prime. A great outdoor space with terrace, seating for all guests, sun loungers and a hot tub. Owners live nearby and nothing was too much trouble for them. The house was exceptionally clean and "covid-secure". If it wasn't booked this week I would have happily stayed longer. Superb place and somewhere I'd highly recommend for families or large groups.
