It was small but had many interesting features. No parking on site, and the nearest parking is on the river/straight front and costs £7 whether you stay for 5 mins or all day. Reasonable entry charge and straight away you're presented with a stunning aspect on the outside of the moat. You then enter the castle through a beautiful drawbridge. Once inside, there are options to walk the ramparts or, in a unique aspect from my experience, an inner walkway. Both walks provide unique perspectives to view the inner and outer castle walls as well as the fighting points available when the castle was operational. No great guidance once inside, but a nice little shop on exit.

Dogs are allowed in on short leads and must stay on the lower levels which send to be standard practice. The staff were really great (and so cheery given the depressing institution itself). But then we came to the treadmill (possibly the only one still in-situ) and the door to the gibbet and things got even more shocking. The Centre is also child friendly as there are a number of activities they can do including a hunt for a Welsh dragon to win a prize; a quiz about the information on show and some blocks with which they can construct their own bridges. There's a Network Rail track runs by the railway that could be turned into a cycleway for little cost, but the Welsh government are too lazy. It also provides nice views across the Menai Straits in both directions. The site exhibits a few historical artefacts, such as one of the tubular girders. There is a medium-sized walk around the gardens, with woodland paths, cut lawns, walled path overlooking the sea, play areas and the terraced garden, although the whole lot can be walked around in 30-45 minutes so not the biggest walks. Most areas outside are dog-friendly, except for the terraced gardens (because of the flower beds I guess, which are well-tendered and definitely worth a walk around with camera in hand). The house itself, although seeming quite large, can probably be walked around in as little as 15 minutes if you are not reading all the information or looking at everything. The cafe does seem to struggle when it's busy, it took over 20 minutes queueing at 1pm, although the food was fine (usual offerings of savoury items at National Trust properties, and nice cakes too).

However, I was pleasantly surprised. As a late baby boomer, I could relate to most of the vehicles as those that were owned by parents or in my own early driving years. Also a great short film explaining how both bridges came about and where built. The volunteers, Jenny & and Janet, were very welcoming and very knowledgeable and nothing too much trouble, they where great guides on where to start with the displays. Also gave good ideas, with where to go on a trail around Menai Bridge. Much appreciated as we got see the bridge close up , church on the island and parts of the town we would have missed. Lovely ladies, thankyou. We parked 2 minutes up the road , tho there are a few spaces in front of the Heritage centre with 2 hours free parking. All for £5 a head, what a bargain, great place to visit.
