Most visitors had departed, but the clergy and some laypersons were busying themselves to welcome parishioners for the 5:30 p.m. Evensong. By arriving late we missed the Cathedral’s free tours (the website shows the last one begins at 3:00 p.m.), so we picked up a welcome booklet instead and did our best to follow the suggested visit order. The nave is magnificent, and we marvelled at how well its strong Norman design had been integrated into the lovely fan vaulted ceiling. Two massive spiral-ribbed columns stand out. Because of the service preparations we were only able to peer into the lovely wooden choir, but we found our exploration of the impressive Presbytery and its four adjacent chapels to be fascinating. Given the time we could only do a cursory exploration of the ceiling’s treasure trove of carved medieval ceiling bosses, but we certainly plan to return to explore them more fully. Practical info: Norwich Cathedral has no entry fee, but a donation is much appreciated. An excellent list of tours, events, dates, and timings is available on the Cathedral’s website. Well worth the visit, it's a combination of walking around a historical castle, museum exhibits and artefacts, fine art, natural history and a WW2 exhibit. There are screenplays/shows in the great hall which briefly go over the history of the castle, and there are good views out the windows and across the battlements. All items in exhibits are labelled and described, and there are display boards around the actual castle interior explaining parts of daily medieval life or the significance of certain design/areas of the castle. Anyway the lady who served us was really nice and friendly. However the food was terrible. Wings 2 4 1! No surprise. The wings were definitely batch cooked hours prior and some sauce thrown on. If not then they were terribly seasoned and over cooked. They had a funny smell also. Fries were a good portion and made the meal slightly worth it. On top of the place being dark, which may be its aesthetic, the seats were very dirty. I don't think its a food place, more of a late night bar. To top it off there was a 11.5% service charge.. for what?? for refried wings, with a little sauce. Not sure how this shabby restaurant thinks they can provide bottom level food and try to add a service charge % that you would see in a more upscale restaurant.

The service was amazing my two servers were attentive and just good people. No fault to them at all. The crème brûlée itself. Good. And the Mock-tail. One of the best I’ve had! The negatives. We had prebooked just for drinks on the outdoor terrace, we were taken to our table and then left there - no further service, no menu, no indication of where we should order. My partner managed to wave down a waiter who was walking around nonchalantly and said we would probably have to order inside as he didn’t think the outdoor bar was ready yet (even though there were quite a few outdoor tables already taken and a huge party of about 15 people). He then walked off and went to flirt with a two women at a table and ignored all the other tables. We ordered some cocktails which to be honest were quite expensive for what they were, and I’ve had a lot better. Papadums with what was clearly home made pickles and Mirchi Pakoda (chilli fritters) were a great start to the night. For mains we went for Mushroom Kadai with rice, Masala dosa, with a sambar and coconut chutney and two nan breads. We both opted for non alcoholic drinks, including Blood Orange and Ginger soda (bloody marvellous!) and a cucumber and mint mocktail. As a fan of chai I decided to finish with a vegan masala chai that was to die for. The best thing about Namaste is not having to ask 'is this dish vegan' or 'do you have vegan/vegetarian options'. It did not disappoint at all. First of all, it's a nice clean restaurant. The staff are lovely and make you feel welcome as soon as you come through the door. We recieved an amazing amusebouche (complimentary pre-starter) and freshly baked bread whilst we waited for our starters. It wasn't too long before the starters arrived. Fortunately we were seated upon arrival. The atmosphere was great, not too loud and not so quiet you could hear a pin drop. The staff were attentive and cleverly uniformed to identify roles. Wines by the glass were supermarket-kinda of quality. Funnily enough most people around us were drinking beer and not wine. Ambience is good but nothing special. I was told about The Eagle and so decided to check it out. This Inn has some quirks and a slightly confused style, but offers up a selection of spaces that suit different needs to an extent. We had the Eagle Burger on recommendation from one of the other reviews on Google, and whilst the overall presentation is fairly basic with the wide rim white plate and large helping of fries but no other garnish or salad to balance the visual, what you do get is a really tasty burger. A well-judged balance of ingredients, a properly cooked patty and a sesame seed topped bun that felt fresh. The ambience is maybe a little lacking with only hard chairs and tables for the most part, and the main bar area could do with some sound deadening to make it easier to talk to the barman. We sat inside but there is a seating gallery with sun umbrellas outside directly over the River. The pub has a screen or two for sports but they were not showing anything during our time there. Friendly bar staff and we spoke about how a Stout can be a great drink for any season of the year not just winter! We had two pints and two half pints of the lovely Nutty Ambassador Hazlenut Milk Stout by The Little Critters Brewing Company. The beer is top class and a very reasonable able price indeed. The pub serves alcoholic drinks other than real ale however it is rightly in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, with nine hand pumps on offer, and the staff will let you taste and chat about the ales if you are undecided what to have or maybe you are new to ale drinking, making it a welcoming place to have a try. We didn’t eat this time but pizzas and other meals are available. The Pub has an excellent location and it was really enjoyable to watch kayaks, rowing boats and paddle boarders going past. On the first climb we were told the shoes were free, but after that they can be rented for £3. The shoes are in great condition and relatively comfy too! There is a massive variety of routes all numbered and coloured so its really easy to make your way around. We really enjoyed our time here, next time I need to remember the chalk! 😂
