The staff was very nice and welcoming! However, they are a little disorganized. Be sure to plan ahead, the website does tell you to call at least 24 hours ahead to plan your check in process. We used a third party app to book, so we weren’t aware of this. They were flexible and ended up having our room ready for us after a few hours after showing up. We were lucky that staff was there at the time we showed up and were able to get access. However, we did have to call a couple times (once for an extra towel bc there were 2 of us and only one towel our in our bathroom and the another time upon checkout since no staff were present). Both times we called were during what is listed as office hours according to both the website and the binder that contains guest guidelines in the room. No one answered either time and the voicemail box was completely full. Upon checkout on a Monday morning, no one was there during the listed business hours. The binder tells you to lock the key in the lockbox if no one is in the office. The code in the binder must’ve been outdated because it did not match the amount of digits on the lockbox that they currently have. I tried calling the office & was again met by a full voicemail box. I then proceeded to call the after hours number listed in the guest binder. I didn’t receive an answer, so I left a voicemail. I felt bad because I couldn’t lock the keys up anywhere, so I ended up just having to leave them in our room, unlocked. We are appreciators of Degas and the other “impressionist” artists, so we were hoping it would be a fitting experience for us. They certainly delivered! We stayed in the “Estelle” suite, which is the room with the iconic front balcony where Degas painted “woman seated on a balcony.” While we were there, my boyfriend proposed to me on that very balcony! Not only was the staff more than accommodating during our stay, they provided complimentary champagne and sherry to congratulate us, along with a complimentary private tour of the home and breakfast with the room. It made for such a romantic and wonderful weekend. David, the owner, was very welcoming and amiable, along with the entire Degas house staff. A special shoutout deserves to go to our tour guide, Joanie, Degas’s very own Grand-niece, who not only was very knowledgeable about the house and history, but added fun family facts to make it a really one-of-a-kind tour! The hotel is very close to all the New Orleans sights like the Park and the French Quarter without being in such a loud and busy area to be disturbed. My fiancé and I kept commenting to each other how staying in our room felt like if you went past the ropes to get to stay in a historic museum after dark! Perhaps for that reason I was slightly disappointed. The start was fantastic. I like the option of having three small cups of their soups. Each one was excellent. While I did see comments about becoming too touristy and spotty service issues, we experienced none of the issues and all of the charm. I was in town visiting my local NOLA work crew and client and wanted to take everyone out for a special meal (we were celebrating a birthday, anniversary, successful presentation, and a brand new member of the team, as well as the last time I’m likely to see them this year). It took our entire table way too long to decide what to order because everything sounded too perfect. We got the gumbo (no okra, with chicken for inquiring minds), the turtle soup, the scallops, the pecan crusted fish with prosecco poached crab, the carrot cake cobbler, and of course the bread pudding. I was a little sad that they did not have reciprocal pricing for AZA accredited zoos, since we are a part of our local AZA accredited zoo. But the money you pay is definitely worth what you get to see. Inside the park was a little pool area (that costs extra) where you and the kiddos can hang out on a hot day. Unfortunately, that was not something out group knew about so we didn't wear water appropriate clothing - although it would have helped because oh my gosh, was it hot when we went there. They have the zoo divided up into areas, and some of my favorite things to see was the ocelot, tapirs and the maned wolf (so which I was so thrilled!). They also have a cute little area dedicated specifically to the bayou and had a store where you could somewhat get out of the heat and cool down. It can take about two to three hours to cover the whole entire zoo, which is a lot of walking but - like I said entirely worth it. I went to the aquarium a few years back, and this definitely out did the aquarium! So if you're only able to do one - the zoo wins out!

It was amazing to hear about the history of Vietnamese culture in New Orleans which we did not know a lot about. The stories shared were touching and inspiring.
