To say it feels like a bayou jungle adventure at a Disney park is to on one hand show how little of true old natural Florida we have experienced and also to allude to the magical discovery of every step of this charming boardwalk path! While we were not comfortable venturing into the side trails so very near alligators, there were picnic tables and intriguing trails scattered off the raised path you could try! Dogs seemed to be welcome but we were not comfortable with that either as we observed the wildlife throughout! The birds were majestic!! Several bird varieties to our untrained eye and some new ones to us. There was an elusive turtle and an incredible rookery of birds roosting at days end. So many places to stop and rest if you need and shelter from the sun. The path was excellent for a mobility walker or stroller. We admired the dramatic trees and fading sunlight. Boats passed by and a jet ski. All of us loved this short excursion and could imagine the joy of returning again and again at different times of day and seasons. An absolute must see if anywhere nearby for the whole family. Mount Dora itself is a sweet destination of historic homes and darling cafes and shoppes. Include Palm Island Park on your itinerary!

Hidden Waters Preserve is near Crooked Lake. I've included a map in my photos. There are several trails to choose. Some are quite strenous for those not in shape. It has some nice sites on the water with dock access for those that like to bring a boat and spend some time boating/fishing on the Harris chain of lakes. The shower/bathroom facilities are kept clean and very accessible from all camp sites. This was also our late dog, Bella's favorite place to camp with us before she passed last December. Our last trip, end of March 2024, was very nice except for 2 annoyances. First was the tussock moth caterpillars. They were everywhere and would fall on you from the trees at any moment. You could have them crawling on you and not notice them for quite a while. Eventually they would attach to your gear, chairs, camper and vehicles and cocoon to later release as a moth wherever your next location happens to be. Supposedly their fur can be mildly irritating to the skin, but I didn't experience that about them, mostly flicking them off myself or whatever they crawl onto next to where you are. The second annoyance was the amount of plant growth lakeside. Before on our trips the weeds and plants like cat tails were managed pretty well, but this last trip plant management seemed out of control. The main thing about the plant growth was that it blocked access to the lake for our kayaks. Normally we would just leave our kayaks next to where we would deploy and put in from there next to our site and just pull the kayaks out and leave them there. Because the plants had overgrown in most of those areas, we couldn't deploy like we normally have and would need to cart the kayaks to the boat docks and put in from there, which isn't the easiest for deployment of kayaks . The other thing about the growth of water plants lakeside was that they block much of the view from the campsite. It was always very nice having clear views of the water from many of the lakeside sites, especially for sunset views. Except for the mentioned annoyances, we love camping at Trimble Park and would give 5 stars otherwise.

The park consists of quite a few play equipment options that are very much geared towards young babies but, also a few things like swings and monkey bars, as well as a playhouse for the bigger littles. The flying disc course is cool. Very big and intertwined into the woods just beyond the playground. Unfortunately you’ll want to go into the forest when it’s cold because going even when the weather is in the 60s yields big plumes of mosquitoes. I could see where going on a cold day would be quite a bit of fun. Terrain wise, it’s the woods… so expect a couple patches of minor sugar sand but mostly compact ground covered in grass and leaves. Easy on the stroller. Regardless, the playground is mulchless with an astroturf surface which is nice and soft for accidental falls, and honestly looks cleaner to play on than dirty mulch. Bathrooms on site and close parking is a plus. I’ll be back!
