I took a 6y and there was so much to do. Lots of items to handle, presented at under 2 feet from the floor so easy to reach and replace. The content is interesting to locals and visitors alike. Dressing up is available throughout and multiple worksheets/Lego hunts etc help to engage different ages of younger kids, allowing older kids (grown ups) to be afforded the time to read at their own pace. Staff are easily found, cheerful and helpful, with pride in the building and its contents. We were sorry not to get up to the Obscura (for which there is a fee) but I'd highly recommend this for all ages of visitor as I've been several times before.

The highlight was most definitely the Roman altar reconstruction showing how vividly it was painted when it was first created. We didn't visit the camera obscura as there was an additional charge. The museum is free to enter although donations are most certainly welcome. The staff were also really friendly and welcoming.

However go over the bridge into Dumfries town center and everything changes? This is not caused by the coronavirus or lock-down, Dumfries as a town and town center have been in steady decline for many years now and the local council really needs to look at whats happening here, maybe reconsider opening up the pedestrian areas in the town so buses and taxis can get back into the center, then maybe just maybe businesses will want to return and Dumfries will be the market town it once was?
