We came from Perth and were so keen to try this bakery, but it was so disappointing. The hot cross bun was inedible. As seen in the image, it was SO DRY and the flavour was terrible. There was clearly no salt in the dough (all sweets should have salt to balance the flavours) and it was as hard as a rock. It was low, not fluffy at all and there were too many sultanas. There was no cinnamon flavour throughout and it was just awful. I recently baked hot cross buns at home and it was not difficult at all. Mine came out fluffy and delicious. The semla bun was dry and stale and the cream didn’t taste right. There was no almond flavour throughout the pastry and it was barely edible. The almond paste inside was so sickly sweet that it had to be taken out. All of the sweets and bread products sit out and I believe this is why they go stale to quickly. They’re not in a fully enclosed cabinet and today was a 30°C day. There were products with fresh cream and other dairy products sitting out of the fridge in the open warm air. All items have no prices displayed and it cost over $16 for 1 hot cross bun and a small semla bun. There was a sign stating “public holiday surcharge” but there was no percentage stated. We were so disappointed with our experience here. Melbourne has such incredible bakeries around and I will not be returning to Austro. Well presented, quirky and a decent menu range. The setting is nice. There are indoor and outdoor areas. We chose outdoors and it had a very mediterranean feel with an ivy-covered wall and large sun umbrellas. Indoors is a bit more formal but also a lot noisier. My three stars was awarded for the poor time management... otherwise it would have been 4 stars. We had expected to wait - and we did for about ten minutes - but it became obvious very quickly that they both delayed allocating a table (a number were free while we waited) and then very much delayed sending out our order (we waited almost 40 minutes from ordering to delivery). Either get more kitchen staff or tell potential customers there will be a half hour wait.....we'd have been fine with the latter. After a comment to the waiter (who, to be fair, was quite responsive) and a zero tip on paying we were offered our coffees for free.. a nice gesture (which we accepted) but I'm not sure I will be returning. People with mobility issues will have some difficulty as the front entry is up a few steps and the back entry - although at one consistent level - is accessed via an uneven cobblestone alleyway.

We tried the lemon citrion tart and croquet monsieur. Our delightful bites were hand made and so fresh - I loved it. My tart shell had soft but smooth pastry, I prefer a little shorter, the filling was lemony with the right mix of creamy. The ham used on the croquet monsieur was fresh and moist, so good. The cafe itself is really cute and staff were busy with time to be friendly. Bathroom is clean and advertises that all products are freshly handmade and are sold to other cafes. Enjoy. We ordered Sweet Potato Wedges, "The Crux special of the day", a bulgogi beef on beetroot bun from the lunch menu, Macha Latte and Hot Chocolate. My dish came with Potato Wedges and we ended up having both sweet and usual potato wedges. I absolutely loved it and it is one of the must-try starters. The Hot Chocolate was delicious and I absolutely loved it. It was the first time I was having Macha Latte and although it looked fabulous I still prefer coffee if I have an option. The selection was mind blowing, my eye caught a black burger served with porchetta, cold slaw and relish, a custard filled beignet and a chocolate mousse cake. The burger was fresh and just the right coldness of you like having it cold. Honestly o could have eaten one from each of the pastries they had as they were so delicious looking.
