We have a villa in Turkey, and we have long experience with Proper Car. We first used them about ten years ago, and at that time we were quite impressed. Pickup and drop off was always a hassle, and the cars were sometimes very old and in bad shape, but the price was right and the company seemed honest. Over time, that has gradually changed. We rented a car from them for more than a month this summer, and the experience was so bad that we will now start using another company. Their prices are seductive, but you should know that they find ways to pad the cost:
Unlike other companies, they provide the car with a completely empty tank. They drain the tank and then add enough fuel only to get you to the nearest petrol station about a kilometer away. Unless you bring a siphon to the airport, you will be unable to avoid returning the car with much more fuel than received at the outset. Given the prices of gasoline in Turkey, this is significant.
Their customer service has deteriorated badly. When we arrived in Bodrum after a long international flight, the rep and car were not there. We had to find someone with a local mobile phone who called their office. Thirty minutes later the car was finally delivered. Then we needed to extend our rental for a few days because of flight changes, and I sent them two e-mails and a text message. There was no response to any of the messages. I finally reached them by phone the day before our flight and told them that I’d drop the car off at the airport at 3 p.m. They said fine and agreed to meet me outside the domestic terminal at 3. When I arrived, the Proper rep was furious and literally screamed at us because he had come to the airport at the originally scheduled time of noon. He claimed to know nothing of the phone call or e-mail messages.
Worst of all, they resorted to absolutely dishonest practices to add to the charges. They complained that the car was dusty and would need to be vacuumed--so they added a vacuum charge. In all my years of car rentals, this was a first. They pointed to a couple of very small marks on the car (which were there when I picked it up). Since we had not insisted that the rep note them on the contract, we were charged for them, as well. In all, they added a total of 370 Turkish lira to our bill. Given the hassles and the extra charges, this rental was not a bargain, and I’d recommend using a reputable car rental firm.
