My primary airport is Newark, so really any other transit hub is going to benefit by comparison. But notwithstanding that bias, Norfolk was an absolute delight and has secured a top spot on my list of domestic airports to travel through. I came through here last week on Tuesday afternoon/Wednesday evening for a quick business trip, at the tail-end of both a national holiday and a government shutdown. There were a lot of reasons to think this adventure would have been a nightmare of delays and drama, but the Norfolk aspect of the journey was one of the best parts.
In some ways this is both a positive and a negative, but I'm pretty sure this airport hasn't been upgraded since roughly 1991 - it could definitely use some TLC in that regard, and the area especially by the baggage claim that I walked through reminded me so much of the dying shopping mall era from my childhood, complete with minimal activity. From some of the signage I saw and some outdoor construction, I get the impression that changes are on the way but I can't say that the outdated motif really affected me in a negative way, especially when you consider that I was here for several hours, having missed a potential earlier flight back up north by a few minutes (though it's not clear that flight had any additional availability). Had I known the timing, maybe I do a quick trip to downtown Norfolk or something for an adventure, but you know what they say about hindsight.
The TSA/security situation here is probably the best I've encountered; the bar is kind of in hell with that, but I'm sure there are travelers in active therapy over the security at Newark, which always has a line with employees who look miserable. Everyone here was a delight - legitimately warm and friendly both times. Yes, both, meaning for the first and possibly last time ever, I voluntarily walked out past security after getting to my gate to go to a restaurant in the main hub area, knowing full well I'd have to get everything scanned, etc. again. Each time I was literally the only person in the security line - I was in and out in less than two minutes. Just incredible, and basically rendered my least favorite part of airport travel moot.
The biggest area of improvement (and maybe this is going to come with the future upgrades I likely witnessed) is the amenities. You do have a few eating options, but the primary sit-down restaurant in Concourse B looked pretty rough and an airport employee actually recommended that I go out to the main area past security to try The Local instead. Can you recall a situation where someone working at an airport has encouraged you to go through security again like that? It's most definitely not a compliment of any of the businesses in either Concourse.
This is very much a regional airport, catering primarily to the SE US. I didn't actually see any flights going out of the country but I'm sure those are vastly outnumbered by the quick flights to SC, FL, etc. Logistically it would be unusual for me to back here any time soon but I certainly wouldn't mind it.
