Just respect others noise levels and set expectations for sound proofing due to the nature of the buildings listed status, as a Londoner this was very quiet compared to what I am used to so a lovely get away. The staff were genuinely friendly and welcoming, which made a big difference. Our room was lovely, clean, and cozy, and the kids were thrilled with the bunk beds! The entrance through sun soaked and beautiful garden was immediately inviting. I enjoyed the Sunday Lunch Topside of Beef which was outstanding along with the veggies and huge Yorkshire pudding, by far one of the best roasts I've had eating out and definitely recommend (the Cauli cheese alone gets 5*). Our party also thoroughly enjoyed the delicious Scotch Egg starter and mains of Fish and Chips as well as Fish of the Day plate. We rounded the meal off with a couple of puddings (a crumble I'd spotted being served earlier that we couldn't resist and an affogato served with the silkiest icecream). With our 1yr old in toe, the staff were hugely accommodating to the little one, preparing a high chair, accommodating our request of an extra Yorkshire pudding for him to enjoy and even offering to rinse the child's tableware we'd bought with us at the end of our meal. P.s. I rarely review meals out but today's lunch surpassed expectations so much that I felt compelled to share secrets of this gem of a find in the heart of Devon!

We found Pennywell farm when searching for somewhere to visit en route to our holiday park. Even on a wet Monday we still had a fantastic time. There’s plenty of animals to feed in the dry. Feed was available to purchase at the entrance/shop. The goats will definitely make you giggle. From the incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable staff giving talks, to holding a piglet. Both children aged 2yrs old were fully engaged and made to feel welcomed by staff. There’s also plenty of hand washing stations located around the site. The views from the top of the viewing tower give you a 360 panorama of picturesque Scenery which all compliment its truly beautiful location. We loved it so much we returned on the Friday, on our way home from our holiday. If you have the opportunity to pay Pennywell farm a visit it’s well worth it! Thank you to the team at Pennywell farm for building something truly beautiful for many generations to enjoy and making us feel so welcomed!

Pumpkin Day was fantastic, the weather was cold but the rain held off. Cuddles with mice, rabbits, guinea pigs and pigs indoors was extremely well organised and overseen by friendly, helpful staff with complete emphasis on the animals welfare. Same for the pig racing and we were very happy and impressed. Food available was pretty good, but difficult to find something for my 9yr old grandson,as he has very severe allergies to milk, cheese, gluten and even soy and there really wasn't anything he could have. cross contamination couldn't be ruled out. I understand that they can't cater for these problems,but might i suggest that at least a few gluten free with vegan cheese pizzas could be kept in the freezer for people with these sorts of problems?. Then they'd always be able to offer something.It's hard when he has to always take his own food and can't join in with everyone else. That said, they were as helpful as they could be and did have fruit juices he could have. We thoroughly enjoyed our day out together seeing the animals and playing in the play areas, taking photos and making memories. Came away with a few unusual pumpkins and plenty of smiles. We came to visit as a way of celebrating our 9th wedding anniversary. Grounds are well kept and animals well loved. Every member of staff was smiling and it was obvious they enjoyed working there, they had a genuine friendly manner. Our almost 2 year old had a great day, not sure if we would be happy to pay an extra near £20 for him once he turns 2 though, but it was definitely worth the price paid for 2 adults. The only negative thing was the bouncy castles, feel you need someone supervising them during busy periods, lots of older children that shouldn’t be in there bing boisterous and dangerous really I pulled my little one off in the end and I could just see someone getting really hurt. I know the parents should be watching but unfortunately people don’t and a little one is going to get really hurt. This place has a whole heap of activities dotted throughout the day, a new one every 30 minutes! It has a huge variety of animals and for a small additional fee you can feed the animals. They loved being in the butterfly house, especially when the butterflies landed on them and sat on their hands for ages. There are many to see flying in amongst the plants. There are also terrapins and an iguana which is billed as Izzy the green iguana but is bright orange! The otters however were a bit of a disappointment, even at feeding time. The keeper just put the food into the enclosure and it was not easy to see what the otters were doing. The girls got bored with it very quickly and went back to the butterfly house. There is a small cafe outside and you have to show your tickets again to get back in the butterfly house. There are only snacks of pasties or sausage rolls, but they were delicious. Ice creams and beverages also available. There is a larger eatery in the station area. Nice gift shop, lots of things for young ones, but not much for over 10s. Also items for adults. We spent 3 hours there so definitely a place worth visiting for a morning or afternoon but not a whole day.

The butterfly sanctuary is almost unique - there are few places that allow people to walk directly through an open habitat to find what they can. Two warnings - it is significantly more humid than the local area, and it can smell of the ripe/rotting fruit they feed on. It is a small place but well worth a visit. I got gifted the otter experience and I adored it! Only downside was I couldn’t get more pictures of me with the otters (we had fishy hands quite rightly so and the keeper had to do the talk with lots of questions) but thankfully a lovely member of the public took one for us. Hand feeding them was a dream come true. Staff are lovely and clear they take good care of the animals. We were very lucky in that 2 weeks ago they received smooth coated otters which are my favourite! Thank you otters and butterflies.

A pleasant ride and experience. We did not book and there was plenty of seats as there were several carriages. The museum has plenty of exhibits to look at. The steam train ride to Totnes was a gentle trundle through the countryside pulled by a GWR Pannier tank loco and along the river Dart. A really enjoyable day out, if you're in the area check it out. Location amazing. The service from the male waiter was exemplary. However when we walked in there were many waitresses walking past us with stone cold aloof expressions ignoring us completely. Lack of food was the issue. Having booked a table, stating it was for Sunday roast, we arrived, greeted by a stoney faced waitress, to be told there were no roasts. We stopped on recommendation from the Granite way cycle hire staff, and it's so worth it! We had a stunning family meal, well presented and full of flavour. We opted for bloody and virgin Mary’s, iced tap water, soup of the day was very flavoursome, coronation chicken sandwich with salad and Burts crisps just right, a single serving ploughman’s and a seafood platter, both were huge, fresh and quality ingredients, then affogato ice cream and expresso to finish. The building itself steeped in history so quirky with modern touches. Parking for us was good as we had booked a superior room which includes a parking space in the hotel car park. Otherwise you have to park in the local one close by. Our room was a good size. Comfy bed. Liked the layout, which worked well and had a great shower room. No view just the roof of their restaurant & a very noisy generator. Steep, narrow stairs to the upper floor, but there is an alternative easy staircase, which is the fire exit we later discovered. Food was delicious but sadly customer service from some staff members was very disappointing & rude particularly at breakfast. We were not alone, and another couple who sat at the next table spoke to us about it. We couldn't relax in the bar area after dinner as booked out to a private group & reservations for people with dogs. Warm Rose was served to us by bottle, and when we asked if there was one chilled, we were told that's all we've got, so we had to put ice into it. All in all, it was a relaxing couple of days with a couple of staff who made us feel welcome and comfortable, but sadly, due to other experiences throughout our time there, we wouldn't return when there is so many other places that are similar pricing in Devon & Cornwall which have left us feeling appreciated as guests & nothing is too much trouble.

We are currently here again in a lodge this time but the whole experience is very different. Overall the place is lovely, the setting is beautiful and generally the staff are friendly but there have just been lots of small things that haven’t been enjoyable. Today we were told the kids zone for our two young kids cost £25 per day. This isn’t a manned facility, it’s a room for kids to play in under parent supervision. For a hotel to cater for families and kids, I have no idea why they charge for it and it was free when we previously stayed. The lodge is very different to the luxury room we stayed in before. It is spacious but feels a bit sparse and not luxurious or homely. The oven pan was disgusting and could do with a new frying pan and didn’t have basics like salt. I understand if they want us to eat in the restaurant but booking it for the times we wanted in the evenings we were told there were no spaces. My wife and eldest son wanted a round of golf with an instructor and left two messages at reception for the golf shop to contact her to arrange the pro, but neither message was passed on and it became too late to get an instructor. And the continental breakfast for £20 per person was disappointing. Overall I’d say it’s a lovely place for a romantic couples weekend or you are out an about the entire time but for young families it wouldn’t be my choice again.

Families should head for the beautiful lodges, where they'll have plenty of space to noisily romp around without disturbing other guests — but still be able to use the hotel facilities. The pool was good too, and it's a smart move to have clearly stayed hours when children are welcome. Guests services weren't open when we arrived (even though advertised until 6pm) so had to collect key from the pub. Given the key and poor instructions. Arrived at room and our bathroom was up the hall in shared hallway. Dartington do 3 double room types: Cosy double; double; double with private external bathroom. I specifically booked the double room with ensuite bathroom (as in picture) and not the double room with private external bathroom (as per other image) so we went back to the pub to sort out. The barman offered us a drink with a 10% discount while we waited and was told the hospitality manager had gone home and he would try and sort out. Half an hour later we get a new key. Go to the room and it hasnt been changed since the last people. Poo in toilet. Sheets slept in. Shower and sink filthy. Old soap on the side. I then head back to the pub. We then get offered a free drink while they sort. No one in the pub has access to the booking system so can't offer a different room. They then decide to call the hospitality manager to come back. 45 minutes later she arrives. Isn't that apologetic and starts blaming the booking system. She goes off to sort a new room. Comes back with a key and off we go. I open the new room and realise immediately it is tiny and actually one of their cosy rooms advertised which is quite a bit cheaper than the room I booked. By this point I'm obviously annoyed so go back to the pub to catch her before she heads off. She isn't that apologetic and I tell her it's now 7.10pm and I've been here for 2 hours and I just want the room I paid for and it to be clean. She then states the only room she has is superior and costs more!!! We end up in the superior (this room costs more) it was clean but if I had paid the extra money for this room I would have been really annoyed. It wasn't superior. Tiny tv in the corner hidden behind a beam. No comfort. The whole place reminds me of a place children go to stay with their school. So after 4 rooms we actually get in a room at about 7.20pm. I have time to just quickly change out of my work gear and get to our meal late. On to breakfast... quality of the actual food was great but terrible buffet and limited choice for a 4 star hotel. Actually better breakfast at a Premier Inn! All in all a terrible experience and I would say with the lack of the services that a 4 star should be, the hotel is really a 2 or 3 star at most. - No 24 hour reception service - no one who can actually help out of hours - dirty dated rooms - unhelpful hospitality manager

Very serene and beautiful as always We opted to stay at Northgate House as reviews sounded wonderful. Had deluxe room with balcony very nice. Unfortunately over the kitchen , sound of the fans from downstairs were a bit off putting. ! We couldn't open the patio door overnight as so windy there was no other window in the bedroom so opened the bathroom window . Which was OK until kitchen staff arrived early morning, quite noisy. Bed large , little on the firm side as we're the pillows. But we're replaced by softer ones on request. Evening meal on first night was delicious , well presented and served by a gem of lady who was very welcoming and attentive. A real asset to the hotel. Breakfast sadly let it down for us . It was as if breakfast was over at 9am and the young lady was intent on packing away rather than serving . We had no direction as to what we needed to help ourselves to or what was available to us. Coffee was tepid. We asked for it to be heated and recieved another luke warm coffee. We eventually were given a freshly made coffee , we had to ask for toast to go with the cooked breakfast . All in all put us off for the next morning so ate elsewhere.

Even though we were tucked away the service was excellent. The food was beautifully cooked but at the top end of what we would normally pay in local Devon pubs, however this is a hotel in the middle of Dartmoor and we have eaten here before, so the price was expected. The venue itself is amazing and there are so many cool different backdrops to shoot against, the staff were super lovely and helpful which makes the day so much easier. The light coming through the greenhouse is just perfect, the first dance was at sunset and seeing it come through the glass was something out of a movie! Can't wait to be back.

The venue is literally stunning, the glass house is breathtaking and the courtyard is perfect for after ceremony drinks. The house was perfect for prep, enough for a whole load of people to stay in and get ready and they rooms are really spacious. The house has great light too which is a photographers dream. The ceremony space was out by the lake where you can overlook the country views when the weather is nice. I also caught a glimpse of the inside ceremony space in the greenhouse which looked super cool. The GlassHouse is where the wedding breakfast was, dressed with long tables and styled so well. The light is incredible and the indoor plants really make you feel like you're in a different country. There are SO MANY awesome places for couples photos like the barns, back by the river and a really cool tunnel coated in greenery. I can't wait to shoot more at this venue in 2024 + 2025.

An oasis of calm after the chaos of the last year. Lots of luxurious touches like huge Egyptian cotton towels, a soft facecloth to remove your makeup, a beautiful big shower, fresh milk in a cooler box and the most amazing lemon drizzle cake. A really comfortable bed and amazing breakfasts. Don’t miss out on Debbies’ Platters they are simply delicious. It was so peaceful sitting on the decking outside our room watching the meadow grasses whisper in the breeze, we even spotted a barn owl. Debbie and Michael are the loveliest hosts and printed out a couple of fantastic road trips for us. We stayed 3 nights and wished we had more time there.

If you're looking for privacy this isn't the place as it's communal kitchen and toilet. Unfortunately toilet was very dirty and not flushed . The bed sheet was also thin. The room however was kept in a homely manner which was nice. I would have given it 4 starts if it wasn't for the toilet. Overall verdict is it's a good short stay hotel :)

First of all there was someone appearing to be living there and the facilities are shared, toilets and kitchen. Not sure that is a great idea in a global pandemic, shouldn’t it be one in one out in this situation. The toilet smelled of smoke and had cigarette butts in the toilet and the toilet hadn’t even been flushed. There was spit in the sink and the towels stank of smoke too.. It didn’t look like it had been hoovered and all the milk cartons were so outdated it was like cottage cheese.
