This has been one of the most frustrating and unprofessional housing experiences I’ve ever had. After weeks of unclear communication about what I needed in place of a separation letter, I decided to visit the leasing office in person, hoping to clear things up. Instead, I was treated disrespectfully. One of the staff members repeatedly cut me off while I was speaking and even put his hand in my face. I chose not to escalate it because I just want to move, but it was unacceptable behavior.
I initially applied to Vela through Pronto and was told by Jasmine that I wouldn’t need to apply again to view other properties in the Yards Collection. That turned out to be completely false. After two weeks of no follow-up, I contacted the compliance team myself, only to be told they had no record of my application and asked if I wanted to apply. I lost two weeks due to miscommunication and disorganization.
Adding to the delay, the person helping me—Nicole—was in an accident, and I was told all of her work was locked to her account. While I truly hope she’s recovering well, it’s alarming that one employee’s temporary absence can completely derail the process. This is a clear sign of a poorly designed and fragile system—not one that’s equipped to help people who need urgent housing.
On top of all that, they’re now insisting that my current employer fill out a manual employment verification form. The problem? My employer doesn’t do that, we use The Work Number, a national employment verification service that is literally designed for this purpose. I went to the website myself and confirmed that it verifies everything they claim they need, yet I was told “The Work Number doesn’t verify information,” which is just blatantly false. At this point, it feels like they simply don’t want to do the work.
I’ve provided my offer letter, explained why I don’t have separation documents from former employers, and submitted everything I possibly can, but I keep getting vague or contradictory responses. It’s been nearly two months since I began this process, and instead of getting closer to a resolution, I feel like I’m constantly having to start over.
Between the poor communication, disorganized systems, misleading information, and outright unprofessional treatment, I would never recommend this experience to anyone. The stress, time loss, and lack of urgency have been overwhelming, and for a property group of this size, it’s just inexcusable.
