From the moment we arrived, we felt not just welcomed, but connected to something bigger than a typical dining experience. We sampled a variety of local dishes, with standouts including the Curry Chicken and Butterfly Flower Steamed Chicken, both bursting with flavour and beautifully presented. For dessert, we shared three incredible sweet dishes: a rich flower chocolate cake, a light and fluffy coconut cake, and a refreshing coconut sorbet. All were fantastic (see photos below!). Then they picked it up, examined it carefully, went to the kitchen, and at some length came back with a piece of cooked garlic about the same size and color, and told me I was crazy, it was just garlic. Can you even imagine, they tried to gaslight a 40yo woman like I’ve never cooked or eaten garlic before, as if garlic isn’t an extremely easily identified taste and texture? We visited here on multiple occasions as the food was fantastic and very reasonably priced. Toot the owner was also super friendly and stopped to talk about his restaurant and Battambang. We decided to take part in his cooking class- costing $15 per person. This was a wonderful experience starting with a trip to the local market to see the ingredients we would be using and have it all explained to us as some of the ingredients are very different to what we get in the UK. Then we cooked spring rolls, Amok, Lok Lak and a banana dessert. Toot took the time to explain each of the ingredients and explain the importance in Khmer cuisine. His level of English was exceptional and he was clearly very passionate about cooking. Overall I would recommend here for a good wholesome Khmer meal and definitely for the cooking class.

I stayed in a fanned dorm here and really enjoyed my time. The room itself was fine with a decent bed and good locker boxes. We saw this cooking class and decided to try it out. The owner was super friendly and accepted us spontaneously. The class itself was AMAZING! What we didn't realize as well is that 100m from the hotel is an open air night club/bar. They were blasting very loud electronic music that could be heared until 1am even with earplugs in due to the bass vibrations. Of course that's not something the hotel can do anything for, I am surprised there are no reviews about it, but heard it was only recently re opened. The building looked really good on picture, it would be great for the owners to invest in it and give La Villa a second birth that matches its style.

The rooms are poorly built and unsafe for anyone to stay in. The room door could easily be opened even when locked. The door frame is easily detached from the structure. The front desk is a joke! DO NOT pay for the room without checking anything out first, as your hard earned money will NOT be refunded. I threw some clothes on and opened the door, to see a man entering a room at the other end of the hallway, so I'm assuming it was a staff member with a master key, looking for an empty room to crash in. I assume he only opened my door an inch then froze when he realised the room was occupied. Which made me think the dirty sheets in the first room was more likely to be the result of a staff member using the room between guests, rather than the sheets not being charged after the last guest checked out. There's no chain or security latch on the rooms, so i took the two heavy wooden chairs in the room and stacked them in front of the door, to make it harder to open, then went back to bed. Other pros and cons: - The aircon is cold, and the shower is hot with decent water pressure. - Rooms are reasonably well appointed, with mini fridge, kettle, mugs, teapot and teabags (no sugar, creamer or coffee), TV with a range of international stations (lots of sports channels, plus several movie channels and news channels). - Wifi is fast. - Front desk staff were welcoming and helpful. - Location is fine, within a couple of minutes walk from the central area with loads of restaurants and cafés. - Bed was a bit hard for me. - It was very quiet overnight. The pizza I had was full of flavour and the crust had the perfect crunch and chew. The pizza would rival any non vegan pizza joints in Melbourne (which is saying a thing or two) came to a buffet night, the home made dips were amazing, veggies were tasty as hell. Unsure if it’s always a one man band, but it has been on the two nights I have been, which honestly astounds me. Keeping up service and making amazing food... brilliant.
