There weren't many people dining when we went (Friday Afternoon) but the staff was all friendly and attentive. The food is delicious. We got the 4 entrees/4 sides because it's only $2 more per person than the 2 entree/4 sides so might as well! We got fried chicken, pot roast, shrimp and grits, short ribs and for sides we got poppy seed salad, Mac and cheese, creamed potatoes, and candied yams. General Tso's solid 10/10 -- sauce was perfect between sweet and spicy, chicken was fried and tossed in sauce perfectly, and meat was tenderized correctly. Broccoli was a good crunch on the stem, but soft by the florets. Kung Pao Chicken is a solid 11/10 -- chicken was fried and tossed in the sauce perfectly, you can really taste the five spice and it's probably one of the best I've had. You can clearly taste the spices and it pairs perfectly well with the steamed rice. Meat was tender and the baby corn stalks were the perfect crunch. This was probably one of my favorites. Egg Rolls 6/10 -- this wasn't really filled properly and there was more egg roll wrapper than filling, but I give it a 6 for still tasting good and was fried to perfection. Mongolian Beef and Broccoli is a 7/10 -- the beef was overly velveted. It was far too tender to the point that you couldn't tell if it was beef in terms of texture. They’ve been serving up authentic Jamaican cuisine for several years, first in a house in Robertsdale and later from a small place in Uptown Foley. They were tender and nicely fried, and topped with a mild étoufée-style shrimp topping that was absolutely wonderful paired with the slightly tart green tomatoes. I don’t even like tomatoes as a general rule but I scarfed down more than my share of these, they were that good! For an entrée, I picked the seafood combination. It had both curry and jerk shrimp, grilled fish, a crab cake, and fried scallops. As far as the seasonings went, they were spot on; the curry was warm and velvety smooth, and the jerk seasoning wasn’t overly salty or too spicy. The crab cake was as much crab as filler, which is rare down here. Most places are 99% breading but this one had a much better ratio of crab. The scallops were quite tiny, but not overcooked, thankfully. The shrimp were surprisingly tiny, too. The grilled fish was also not overly seasoned. I bet they got complaints about things being “too authentic”, if you catch my drift. That’s a shame, I like a lot a punch of spice with my curries and jerks. Another dining companion had no such complaints, however. He tried the jerked pork and it was a wallop of jerk flavor. The pork came with a more wet sauce than what I had, so it had more concentrated jerk seasoning and flavor. The pork wasn’t super tender, but it was definitely good and a nice alternative to the typical jerk chicken that is the default choice for many. Our final diner tried the chicken tenders and enjoyed them. They were MASSIVE tenders, with good battered fries; a nice choice for picky eaters or those with sensitive tastebuds. Unfortunately on my visit they were out of their excellent collard greens, but I can attest from visiting their old locations that they are heavy on the red pepper flakes and an excellent island take on our beloved southern classic. They also have fried cabbage, a finely shredded and stewed down dish that I think even the most ardent cabbage-hater could fall in love with. Fried plantains are also available and they’re better here than any Cuban or Jamaican restaurant I’ve tried elsewhere. They are lightly fried so still tender and sweet inside. Overall, a very good thing to have at the beach. I’m miffed that they are further away from me than when they were in Foley, but the new, bigger restaurant and beach-convenient location should really help them develop a big following. The noodles were also inedible. I think the oil must have burnt because they had a bad smell and flavor. I would have spoken to someone if we hadn’t just stopped in for the food while traveling.
