We had high hopes for this dinner, our friend who recommended the place said his previous experience was a phenomenal steak dinner. We were seated quick and our waitress was spot on perfect with menus, beverages and specials. She was a a joy to experience throughout our stay. They were running a prime rib steak special this Saturday evening, which caught the attention of all three of my dinner companions. I opted for the St. Louis full rack of ribs. Salad and soup were delivered fast. My bride had the vegetable beef soup and was expecting the usual style, which I think most of us are accustomed. She was not impressed with the variation she received. One large thin slice of beef with broccoli and mushrooms in a weak broth. Buyer beware; you might want to stick to the salad. When our main course was delivered I could tell instantly there might be some disappointment in the, dare I call it, prime steak. Now, this is an area of contention for me. If you're going to put prime rib on your menu make sure its "prime". Offering a choice grade of meat saying its prime, but its really only a so called "prime cut" is disingenuous and always disappointing. The steak served was tough with no visible marbling and very weak au jus. I'd rather get real prime and pay for real prime. Now for the Ribs, flavorless, coated with an anemic sauce that looked more like a mask than a compliment. I struggled to eat two small parts of it. I did take home the rest of it, doctored it up with seasoning and a good glaze, that made it palatable. The baked potatoes were on point, fresh and delicious. Based on my friends previous experience with a steak off the regular menu, I'm hazzarding a guess that maybe their standard fare of steak and walleye might tell a completely different story.

Or rather... the Rathskeller... which makes much more sense since Turner Hall is the hall and the restaurant is the bar. The Rathskeller is the bar/eatery famously known as Minnesota's oldest bar, which makes it historic, and the eatery was once held exclusive to members who paid an annual membership fee. At one time, you had to have this membership or come with someone who did in order to eat here. Sadly, most of our friends who had membership have since passed so had it not opened to the general public without membership, I may not have had the option to dine here again on return. So this review is much more about the Rathskeller than it is about Turner Hall and their hall facilities, which we also did enjoy as part of their 2024 July 4th celebration. You can see some shots of these in the photos. Every time I come back to New Ulm Turner Hall and a meal at the Rathskeller is a must. Years ago on one of my first visits I had a burger and now no trip is complete unless I have another. Their burger is somewhere between a classic patty and a smash burger where a smash burger is too thin and the regular patty does not have enough surface for enough sear goodness. On top of that, they understand that the bun matters as much as the meat and condiments and pair it with quality bread. One thing to note, that it seems in MN, a California burger means with lettuce and tomato where in CA, that means add avocado so make sure you specify if you want tomato and lettuce. My wife ordered the Walleye. She loved it and was happy to have ordered it since it is one of MN's state fishes. An item we don't often see in our home state. You should also know the Rathskeller serves it in 2 options: grilled or battered. If you do not specify you will get battered by default. This is more of a crumb than a batter coating. My wife wanted grilled, didn't specify and got it battered and still thought it was good. In addition to these items I also had the coleslaw and cheese cubes. Both were quite good. If you love German Potato salad, note that they do not have it on the menu on the regular and typically make it for special occasions. I do recommend Turner Hall's Rathskeller dining. Go there and try the burger. It may not be the best burger you ever had, but it is one of the better burgers I have had and maybe it will be for you, too!

With that said, my foodie sister who has visited New Ulm frequently insisted that we have a sitting at the Applebee's here. As this is a nationwide chain, it is a well known entity and I was curious to see what they had to offer which impressed my sister so much. This is my experience. Service was outstanding. Our waitress was very genuinely friendly and responsive and was the highlight of the visit. The food was served quickly and presented beautifully. Everything was good but nothing was eye opening or notable. I don't say this in any negative way. My sister insists that the New Ulm offering is better than the Bay Area ones but not being a frequenter of the ones at home I had little to compare to. With that said, it was a classic American food adventure with no particular item being outstanding. In other words, I don't think you will be wowed or disappointed if you choose to stop in. Also consider too that this is based on the collection of plates we ordered which you can see in the photos. There may be something that is truly wowing and it may be worth the effort to find it by stopping in yourself. If you are already a regular patron to the franchise, I would think this would be a par (or maybe better if you are from the Bay Area) visit for the course.

She was completely belligerent, out of line, rude, and a horrible representation of the brand. Before I barely even got the chance to speak, she continued to threaten to cancel my order, screaming over me as I tried to calmly explain her lie up until I left the store (pizza in hand mind you, I wouldn't have been mad if she refunded me at that point, I think I deserved free pizza for that interaction.) Another employee apologized for her actions, as he shook his head gesturing towards her while she continued to spit venom. That apology was better than nothing I suppose. The guy that gave me my pizza has always been a chill dude there, he's a good worker. But if another employee has to apologize for their superior (just guessing), something is clearly wrong here. We were expecting a small slice of cake but it was actually a very large and delicious piece of cake that could be an entire meal itself. This most recent visit while paying for our meal and chatting with the gentleman working I made a comment asking about a certain wine if he had tried it or not and if he liked it, without me asking he took it out and poured a small glass for me to try. Little things like this will keep me coming to Sozial time and time again.

The egg roll was the most edible thing on my plate. I sat and waited to see if they would bring out fresh stuff and they did refill the fried rice and a few other things I did not want to try. I tried the “fresh” fried rice and it was still bad. I went for regular white rice and that had an odor of dawn dish soap. My son tried the chocolate pudding and he said it tasted funny (he is 5) so I had to try it and it tasted as if it was made with spoiled milk. This place is NOT it. From luke warm & cold food, flavorless and quality down right terrible. Sorry for being brutally honest ! I will not be back. Ever.

I would normally rate it a 5, but the manager who was fixing the food screwed our order up and the food was horrible!! The food is usually great. The 3 other employees were trying to explain to him that we didn't get all of our food. He didn't listen to them. All he did was yell at them. They were not busy and he spent the entire time yelling at them and telling them how they were doing things wrong. We were sitting in the restaurant and had to listen to him our entire visit. First off he shouldn't be talking to his employees that way and secondly he shouldn't be talking to them so loudly that everyone in the restaurant can hear him. I gave the 3 employees each a $5 tip and told them they did a great job and that, as their manager, he shouldn't be talking to them like that and they deserve better. I hope he reads this and learns how to treat his employees.
