First place was Knechtel’s. As we waited for them to open we decided to order the 4 piece fish (Lake Erie perch) that came with coleslaw & fries. We sat down on one of their outdoor picnic tables to sample their fish dinner. The batter was nice and light - the perch was deliciously moist and tasty. Top marks!!! The chips were good but not exceptional. But the fish makes the drive to Port Dover worth it. We will be back to try the pickerel. We scratched out the next place we were going to try since their menu tells us that they feature Knechtel’s famous lightly battered Lake Erie perch. Now to the last fish & chips stop😋

It’s known for its speciality, Lake Erie fish, but since we don’t eat fish, can only speak to the hot dog and fries we had. Service was great, even though they were very busy, and food was priced as expected for a beachside pickup window. They have lots of menu items to choose from. The hot dog was 3 ⭐️, but fries were definitely 5 ⭐️. Fries always taste better at the beach, but these were exceptional. They did them extra crispy as we requested, and I regretted not getting them as poutine, as I bet they’d be awesome. There’s a fenced off section of picnic tables available at the beachside of the building, as well as in front, with most tables covered by umbrellas. It was slammed and they still managed to be fast and on point. The food was good, but I felt it could have been better. I had the Brie and blueberry burger, and while it was good I couldn't tell but it had Brie or blueberries on it I wish that flavor would have been more prominent. We went upstairs to the Terrace Room in the hotel. It was renovated on their rooftop. They had a gazebo like structure and the roof of it were like blinds that can close. I started with the perch and the batter was a bit crusty. The fish was okay but not as moist and tasty as it should. We tried the rest of the platter it tasted just ordinary. Let’s not comment about the rest since I’m just here for the fish and chips. The chips were cooked nicely with a crispness on the outside but the overall flavour profile ( combine with the inside) just was not irresistible. Service was good overall for casual dining. Pricing was a bit on the high side for what we ordered. The fish and chips here is not something that would draw me to drive from afar for it.

Tonight we had some perch meals, a battered cod meal a kits perch and fries as well as a kids chicken fingers and fries. I had the mushroom soup which was very good and I love that they added Celery and carrots into the mix. I also had the battered cod which appeared to be your standard beer battered cod but the batter was crispy on the outside and yet light on the inside without the typical greasy puddle you usually find. This restaurant has is a historical part of Port Dover since the 1940's and its still going strong. This is definitely a must eat here location when you are in Port Dover. Kudos to the staff, Rose is always a delight!

Often great service and food and sometimes awful. Went with a group of seven September 7 for wing night. Paid over $60 for something that would’ve tasted better from anywhere else, arrived hot and within a reasonable time, this place should stick to selling alcohol and get rid of the menu, within that whole time their “band” only played music on an amp as loud as physically possible repeating the same songs over and over until the last 30 minutes we were there when they finally started to play something (also as loud and obnoxious as possible) and the two songs we stayed for were just songs that were already released by other bands, by the time we finally managed to get out of there that’s when they announced they were going to be playing an original but we left before the song started. I’ll never understand why they even serve food or why they have a band when they take hours to even do anything.

It consisted of crispy spiced French fries with a lightly spiced queso and shredded cheddar cheese, along with pico de gallo, lime crema and green onion with ground beef & pork on top. Just WOW! For tacos, we tried the pork belly taco and the achiote chicken taco, along with two tacos from a special feature menu: the piggy bean taco (not sure why they called it that because there are no beans on it!) and the fried portobello mushroom taco. All of them were stacked, messy to eat, and absolutely delicious! If we had to pick a favourite, it would probably be piggy bean taco. Need to get that one on the regular menu! An indication of how good the food was is that I only managed to take one picture of it, the very first dish we had. It wasn’t until after we’d polished everything off that I remembered I’d wanted to take photos of everything! Next time, hopefully. All of the tacos were somewhat spicy, so my wife was thankful for a bottle of cold Jarritos and I was able to cool my tongue with a glass of cold beer. Service was friendly & attentive. The chef was very amusing in the kitchen wearing a taco hat! Highly recommend that you try this place! We will definitely be back!

Which puts it head and shoulders above any all you can eat disasters which are plentiful. However, it's still very "Americanized". Whether you enjoy that or not is up to you. Both the salad and soup were excellent. Miso had lovely seaweed inside and wasn't overly salty. Salad had a very similar dressing to Joya sushi in Hamilton (which I love) and both were presented beautifully. Soya sauce was very good. Not sure if it was home made but it had a depth of flavour and a deep color. The sushi comes in elaborate boats and the chop sticks were metallic. The whole dining experience was very beautiful. The wasabi is made "fresh" from wasabi powder. Which is a huge step up from the premade fake tube stuff and one step below the real thing (which I've never had in Canada). It has a nice grit to it and the flavour is complex. Where my complaints start unforutnaly is with the fish itself. Let's talk about the positives first. The rice was perfectly cooked and the correct temperature. Firm and held it's shape. At Sakura both the nigiri and the Maki I tried were on the lighter side in terms of amount of rice. Salmon was fresh and tasted very good. Cuts were well marbled and had great color. Inside the spicy Salmon roll the tempura was long and very crunchy. This gave it a very different taste and was good. Now for the negatives. Overall the portions of fish were smaller than expected. Fish was cut much thinner than expected. For the Maki, I could hardly tell there was fish at all. The tuna was of a color and consistency I have not experienced yet. I'm really not sure how to rate it because based on appearance itself the fish looked poor quality. It was pink rather than red and got whiter neat the edges. Which led me to question if it even was tuna. The texture was more like tofu than fish. It had a plump firmness to it that also melted like butter once chewed. The tuna flavour itself was very muted. Overall it tasted fine but it was so different from other tuna I've had that it left me unsettled. Then there was the white tuna or what I suspect, escolar. I had one piece and left the other two once I ate the first I noticed a strong fishy smell and not the good kind from it. It did not taste good or fresh. It may have been flounder but what ever it was it had a spoiled taste to it. White tuna should also not be served. It is illegal in Japan and Canada is behind on this. The spicy Salmon roll has the mayo on top of the side of the roll in a puddle. This was unappetizing to me and made it feel like there was too much mayo. But once you bite in you realize almost no mayo was mixed with the inside. Which made it strange. It did prevent the tempura from becoming soggy but at the same time didn't mix. My girlfriend got the vegetarian Maki combo and it was mostly okay except for the avocado. Which was basically liquid. It was very past ripe and really shouldn't have been used. It somehow tasted fine though, just the texture was like toothpaste and as soon as you gripped the Maki with any force it lost its shape and squeezed out the other side. Now for price. The price was nearly double (43 plus tax) for 10 piece nigiri and a single Maki roll than what you would pay at a similar quality sushi restaurant anywhere else. Everything on the menu was very expensive. And they can do that because they sort of have a monopoly. Also they were very adamant about no substitutions. It was written everywhere all over the menu. Having the chef ensure you are getting what ever is freshest and in season is one thing but when 30% of my meal is probably escolar I'd have to disagree. The location is also not liquor licensed. Which was a let down because sushi without beer is a crime in my books. Overall I did enjoy (most) of the meal but would be very hesitant to return. The high prices combined with the poor quality and choice of fish left me unsettled and hungry. If you want high quality fair prices you should take the time to drive to Hamilton.
