Honestly, pretty terrible. After spending $115 on a takeaway treat for my parents who live locally, we were all disappointed. For $115, we got Pad Thai, Basil Chicken, Satay, Dumplings and Kingfish Crudo - a good price if it had tasted good.
The Kingfish Krudo was very average and had a fishy taste that made me unsure of its freshness - this is something I'd order a lot when eating out and something I’ve made at home myself. I’ve had better elsewhere, but it was probably one of the better dishes.
The dumplings had a distinctly weird taste, to the extent that 2 out of 3 of us spat ours out into the bin - no one ate more than one each, and 5 out of 8 were wasted. This isn’t even about them being frozen. As a fan of dumplings, I often eat frozen at home - these had a weird ‘off taste’.
The satay was thin and bland - the sauce that accompanied it was not the peanutty satay sauce you might expect, but a red curry sauce.
The Basil Chicken was so overpoweringly garlicky that the car smelled of it when we came home, and it overpowered any other flavours in the dish. The basil was almost indistinguishable, and it was really very little - a thin layer across some rice. My mum couldn’t eat it at all, it was so strong.
The Pad Thai was gloopy and had an artificial lemon flavour - no need for the lemon segment on the side. The prawns in this dish were good, but overall, it was a real letdown. That said, it’s the best of a bad bunch.
It’s really disappointing. We’ve been meaning to try Pinto for ages - we usually end up getting the amazing curries from the Ampol - but we will never come back and won’t recommend it to anyone in the Clare Valley.
EDIT after Pinto’s reply:
I appreciate the response, but it feels more like deflection than genuine engagement. I’ve travelled extensively in Thailand and eat Thai food often — this wasn’t a case of “not understanding authentic flavours,” it just wasn’t good.
We ate the crudo first, as advised, and it still tasted strange. I’m aware satay isn’t made with peanut butter, but your satay sauce resembled red curry more than anything satay-style. The dumplings had an unpleasant flavour — not a matter of personal preference, but quality. The basil chicken was overwhelmingly garlicky - I expect garlic, but I also expect to taste the other flavours too, and the Pad Thai was reheated properly but still gloopy and artificial tasting.
I don’t leave negative reviews lightly. You’re entitled to defend your food, but dismissing customer experience as ignorance isn’t the way to do it.
