The Missus and I had 3 meals at the Golden Phoenix in 2016 during our visit to St. John's. The food was excellent and the restaurant was hopping then. We highly suggested to our Westcoast Express traveling group on our recent trip but were so highly disappointed. It was downright embarrassing taking our group there. Congratulations. However the food quality has gone downhill. I feel bad writing this as I loved going there. Nothing on the buffet was of the quality I expected. The chicken balls were not fresh at all. It was frozen to fryer and not homemade. Won tons were burnt up. Won ton soup was cold. The restaurant could use a serious clean-up, and the torn seat covers and dim lighting didn’t do much for the vibe. Two stars for the food, five stars for service, and one star for the atmosphere. The building is a little out of date and it may lead you to expect not very good food, but you wouldn't be more wrong. Honestly think it's the best Chinese food I've ever had. I haven't tried many dishes but the ones I have tried are very delicious and I don't even see a need to check out any other Chinese place in town. I usually get chicken balls, rice, and won tons and it's such a great price. The chicken balls are mostly chicken (unlike pretty much every other place I've eaten at), you get lots of rice, and the crispy won tons are delicious. It's even cheaper if you go for lunch! First of all did not like the way I was treated when I walked in. I don’t understand restaurants that are open and serve the public but, discriminate against certain races that pays the same kind of money.
