Went here for dinner on a Monday evening because it was one of the very few places serving food. Upon entering it was far more modern than we expected, with a huge extension to the rear and a large outdoor area. The welcome was pleasant (rather than warm) and service was attentive. The food was good, as were portion sizes. Owners please note: the kitchen is not sound proofed and the ‘banter’ between the kitchen staff and servers was punctuated by regular swearing; clearly audible in dining areas. Well the cheesecake a tasted was off and not good, and once the coleslaw had a not to fresh taste.

It was very quiet inside as it was start of service. Staff were friendly and efficient. My wife had the lasagne and I the ploughmans. Both were delicious and the famous plougmans looked as good as the pictures did. Overall I would highly recommend the Old Castle for a great meal in Bridgnorth.

The staff were very welcoming and showed us straight away to the table took the drinks order and gave us the menus. We really enjoyed the atmosphere in fact, so much we ending up having lunch there four more times I found the portion size to be very good value for money well cooked and presented. My wife asked on two occasions if she could change the meal slightly this was not a problem and the staff were very happy to help. On the service, quality and quantity we received I would recommend The Old Castle. The pub is also very dog friendly.

Food offerings are good and varied but I have to say, the standard has most definitely slipped somewhat in the last couple of years. Whereas before, you were almost certainly guaranteed of being served excellent food, currently, the consistency isn’t as certain and to be honest is quite variable. I agree with another’s reviewers comment about “quantity over quality”, which does seem apparent. Personally, with my last couple of visits, I’d rather have had less on my plate but of a higher standard. I do hope they can get back on top of their consistent quality control but would also add it’s still a decent enough place to eat.

We sat ourselves down at a table as there seemed to be only a couple of staff who I could see were trying to do various jobs. The place itself was drab, the wooden tables were sticky, the cutlery was not exactly clean. My partner and I visited armed with the 40% on-line discount voucher, she had the Hunters Chicken Schnitzel, well, it looked and tasted as though it went straight into the deep fryer from the freezer. The breadcrumb batter was like rock, the chicken had a "wet" texture, and it was barely warm. I had the Ultimate Beef Burger, what a mistake, it arrived after 30 minutes, barely warm, so soggy the seeded bun disintegrated. It was missing the pulled pork and hot honey, the "crispy onions" comprised of 2 minute bits of onion offcuts. I was about to complain when the manager ran up with a small pot of "pulled pork" which, when emptied, half of it was a huge streak of fat. The "skin on triple cooked fries" were awful and could be counted on one hand. Finally, the tables were as sticky as they were 18 months prior. The bill came to around £45. The waitress asked if all was OK, not being her fault, I just told her she didn't want to know. When she brought the bill she told us that the manager had taken off the cost of the burger when in fact all he had done was reduce the two main meals by the 40%. No one was interested in hearing our complaints, the manager was nowhere in sight, therefore I told the senior waitress I would post this review and with a shrug of her shoulders, we left. However the money off vouchers are wonderful & enable us to eat out as money is so tight. Without these we wouldn’t be able to come as often as we do. The beer garden was lovely and a nice traditional selection of foods available and good beer was available. The lady that took our order was friendly and informative. The ploughman’s platter and homemade scotch egg we ordered was great quality and served by a lovely young lady who made the scotch eggs herself. However, our experience was pretty much ruined when the lady that took our order came out into the beer garden after our plates and empty glasses had been cleared and spotted the small package of sandwiches we had brought for my 11 month old baby who is only starting to try small very soft solids in small mouthfuls. Myself and my mother were changing the baby when she approached my father in his 70s and told him sternly he couldn’t sit there as “the beer garden was only for customers”. My father had personally paid this very same lady for our meal and drinks. My father replied “I am a customer I’ve just spent 28 pounds” to which the lady did not apologise and walked off after making him feel embarrassed in front of a full garden of customers for no reason other than holding some snacks for his grandson. My dad was left quite distressed as he had finished a paid meal and drink a the small package of sandwiches in his hand was for my baby. On our way out, the same lady approached him again and said abruptly “next time please just let me know if you are bringing your own food”. I explained that the small package of sandwiches was specially prepared for my weaning baby and yet we still received no apology other than “next time let me know so I can get you a plate and make it special for you”. All it required was a simple apology, my baby does not require a plate and only eats small mouthfuls by hand. The pub advertises on its outdoor marketing collateral that it offers a “warm welcome” and is “family friendly”. In my opinion family friendly is not calling out an elderly man who has paid for food and drinks for his family just because he happens to have some sandwiches for his baby grandson in his hands in the beer garden. An apology would have gone a long way as our experience up until this incident was excellent. Family friendly? I don’t think so.

Absolutely love the scotch eggs. They are freshly cooked and the size of a cricket ball. Divine. The Golden Wanderer, Shropshire pale and The Oracle are all fantastic pints. I saw all staff cleaning and helping the flow of customers be safe, log in with the track n trace, show us how to keep to the one way system and still feel relaxed and happy. The place itself is really nice with lots of character. We ordered two roast beef (£17 each), two roast lamb and one roast chicken. The burger was of poor quality and came on a tiny plate we had to get changed to a grown up size. The duck sizzler was mostly green peppers, not much meat, no garlic or authentic ingredients. Sunday lunch was great except for the meat which was tough and over cooked. Roast dinner ciabatta was dry had no butter or sauce, just a chunk of over cooked beef.
