This was not our first visit. We have made a point of stopping here once or twice each time we are in the Phoenix area (in January, February or March) since they opened. The visit did not meet expectations we had from past visits (January 2023 & March 2024) and this visit was slightly disappointing. We walked in during happy hour, and it was quiet. There was one other couple at the bar. We sat outside on the patio. The view of the pond is so relaxing and is always my favorite spot to sit. We used the QR code to check out the beer options and put in our orders with the bartender. The beer choices were pretty limited and when we asked we were told they were no longer brewing their own beer. Our top favorites from past visits were not available and despite realizing taps typically rotate, there are usually a few house beers that aren't seasonal... Ihad the peanut butter porter which was good, very peanut buttery, and my husband had the amber lager, which he said was OK. He is a Pilsner guy, so it was a change for him Neither were Patent 139 brews.
We knew it was Happy Hour (the website also states happy hour 3-6) and in the past we have received a menu or seen a list on the board as we entered offering a wide variety of happy hour appetizers, entrees, food options... enough that we ordered a variety and were fully satisfied. (Last year for example: wings, avocado fries, sliders all on happy hour and we ordered the origin burger and corn bread regular price). We had to ask what was on Happy Hour and were very disappointed to hear they had:
$2 off charred shishito (regular $7) and a plate of nachos - half the regular nacho portion without pulled pork and avocado for $7 (regular bbq nachos $17). We orders the Happy Hour nachos - but was it really a happy hour special? No, smaller portion, no meat, no avocado... basically a different item, chips with cheese, onion, beans.
We were planning this to be our late lunch/ early dinner so we ordered the fried chicken sliders and BLAT. The sandwiches do not come with sides (they put a small amount of arugula salad on the plate for presentation).
Each sandwich was $15.... The chicken sliders were OK but overpriced for portion: there were two buns with a piece of fried chicken (think a chicken tender or nugget with half on each bun), potato mash, gravy and a pickle on each. I like flavor and seasoning and would have preferred more of a country gravy with more flavor. The BLAT - bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato canning a hoagie bun and was good. The bacon was flavorful and thick cut - a nice chunk, the lettuce was crisp, the tomato fresh, the avocado was a spread rather than sliced avocado which I was expecting.
There was a red pepper aioli spread on the bun that added to the flavor. We shared each of the sandwiches and both agreed this was our favorite of the two. Our total bill came to around $50 before tip. The beer was $5 on Happy Hour.
One big disappointment for us is how far from the story behind the name “patent 139” and the Haas avocado influence they have come in the past nine months and from our previous visits when they proudly served dishes and beer with avocado influence and flavors. I have shared the story and recommended Patent 139 to family and friends who visit the area and always highlight the Haas Avocado background. It seems to be lost.
